I just started playing - 2 months - I actually hit an ATP in my second week. Many comments about a great ATP. I didn't know what ATP meant. 🙃I made two others and missed one, all forehands I've been practicing the backhand atp (in my mind). My only 'practice' is in playing situations. It's a steep learning curve without having someone to practice with. I'm guessing I am a very strong 3.0 if not 3.5. Never played tennis or ping pong. 6 months experience playing racquetball 20+ years ago. I'm learning to play pickleball watching videos, and practicing in the back of my head. These videos are invaluable to me. Thanks.
i've hit one but not in a while and now I know the proper technique, your videos are some of the best. Love the specificity on cues and also the creativity on editing and graphics
Set up a ball machine to spit cross-court dinks with some pace; if the ATP is there, hit like Kyle suggests. If it isn’t, dink back center to where the inside foot of the cross-court player would typically be. Hitting an ATP (or Erne) is all about pattern recognition; and what better way to recognize this pattern than to see it over and over and over?
Like in pingpong, when I have to deal with a wide shot to return I contact the far side of the ball and top spin a return over the low, mid point of the net. To my dismay, the opponent opposite me anticipates my predicament and poaches the return to the spot I vacated knowing I am off balance. The technique you described makes a lot of sense for making my opponent's return difficult as well as catching him by surprise. I will definitely try this shot although being quick to the ball at my age (83) seems to me the hardest phase of execution.
@@thatpickleballguy I used my tennis footwork to return back the low wide difficult angled balls in the Pickelball. In Pickelball the ball can take you out anywhere from 3--15 feet all off the court That's why when pulled out so wide off the court if the ball is going slow or is going out wide fast I make sure I run all the way out to the ball and then step across and then step again to plant the leg and drive and square up with the ball afterwards so I can quickly swing the body all around to face the same direction that I hit the ball in. You probably don't have to square up in Pickleball when returning back low wide difficult balls if you are aiming them around the net post but I do have to square up with the difficult low wide balls if I want to drive it back over the middle of the net aiming at the lowest point in the net which is usually how I handle really wide difficult low balls in tennis if not going for the more risky shot all around the post.. In tennis you can be pulled 20-30 feet off the court by a really good penetrating or skidding wide ball.
Thanks for this video. Because I want to do the ATP and think about it but I hit into the net instead because that is what we are programmed to do. Need to practice
Thanks for the backhand explanation! I’ve always struggled with that so I ended up getting comfortable and good at switching to my off-hand forehand which allows me to not have to cross step I guess. I keep my off-hand choked up in the same place I have it for my two handed backhand to make it a quicker transition. Have you tried this? Are you able to pull off tighter ATP angles with your backhand or forehand?
I can definitely do it better with my forehand. But two handed on the backhanded side for ATP's also works. Riley Newman does this a lot at the pro level!
Forehand give sidespin to curve in and aim for the back corner of the court. Since most ATPs will have all 4 players at the net in a dinking battle, the only thing that matters is placement. If you hit it low towards the back corner they won’t be in position to play it at all. I can’t do backhand yet but I hit a forehand ATP winner almost every session of 4.5 rec play.
I have hit ATP's and the most success has been just as you described your techniques. Thanks for making a clear video, I will use and share with friends and students.
I hit them routinely. I use the sideline as my trigger. Any time a ball crosses the sideline rather than the NVZ line, I'm alerted to the possibility of an ATP.
I actually prefer to switch hands and play the ATP with the left hand. So I have ATP's with both hands. With some practice, you can play the left hand very successfully. This is helpful when, instead of a 7ft wing span, you are 5'8" and have T-rex arms.
At 2:41, you left foot should try to turn over so that your on your toes, not the inside of your foot. You can reach further and more balance by opening your hips. This is called the ring of fire I was taught. So just get the left heel to the sky ;)
I've hit about 20-30 ATPs in six years, nearly all on the forehand side, because of the problem you pointed out about not being able to angle the hand back enough on backhand shots. This is the first I've heard about the crossover step, but thinking about all the times I've seen pros hit ATPs, I think they all do that. Thanks for the tip. I'll try that out. [Edit: Wow! the very next day after watching this, I hit a beautiful ATP on the backhand side! Weird how much difference that footwork makes!]
I've hit about a dozen. I felt like I had an 'A-Ha!' moment when I finally hit my first. The rest have followed quickly. Wait, wait, wait for that ball to get wide and low to the ground or you'll unleash the most embarrassing shot in pickleball, the "HTP", "Hit the Post".
@@thatpickleballguy yes. Super small town is Sacramento county, but they are going to start resurfacing and remodeling our local courts and adding dedicated Pickleball courts soon, so will be able to practice the atp by thanksgiving
