  • We (Free Flight Sports: Mike Bomstad, Tony Policani and myself) took Wills Wing up on an offer to show off a Sport 3-155 demo. We even got to order the specs for it. During the manufacture of the glider we drummed up area pilots for possible demos. One pilot in particular., Leon Murphy, was keen on getting back into the sport after last flying his fixed wing Exxtacy in 2010 - and the Sport 3 was on his 'short list' of gliders to learn more about. By the time the shipment of the Sport 3 arrived Leon was pretty keen on S3s having read/seen all the flight reports regarding the Sport 3's excellent handling and light weight. Leon was enthused enough he helped Mike and Tony in unboxing and setting up the S3-155 the day it arrived. WW dealers must test fly shipped gliders (a definite plus) and Mike and I were itching to do so. We both had nice flights on the S3-155 at Tekoa Mountain (our flight videos are also on UA-cam). Next was Leon's turn to demo the S3 ..... that occured on 10/1/18. Long story short .... Leon liked everything about the glider! So much so he bought the 'demo' from us that evening at our local USHPA Chapter meeting. Looks like we might need another demo! I know I liked it well enough I may get one in the Spring myself!

    Make sure you put your hands on the baseball before putting your feet in the harness, immediately after launch. Otherwise you risk nosing up & stalling the glider

      I do not see Leon putting his feet into his harness before moving his hands to the basetube.

    nice flight Steve! I'll be learning to hang glide this coming spring. I'm transitioning from PG.
    quick question, about hou many hours per year should a guy be flying to get onto the sport 3?

      One of the best gliders to start out with is a Wills Wing Falcon - and getting a good deal on a used one. Once you've gotten in 20-50 hours of airtime you'll have a better idea of whether you will want to move to something like a Sport 3. Falcons are a lot of fun to fly and you'll learn quite a bit flying one. Moving to a higher performing glider too soon tends to slow down learning and increase risk. Which can take the fun out of it. Hours of airtime per year really varies on what types of flying sites you have near where you live. If you have to travel a ways to fly, especially for inland vs coastal sites, it may take awhile to get in 20 hours. With paras you can be flying not long after you get to a site. With hangs .... they take awhile to set up and take down. You won't get as many flights in on a hang glider as you can a paraglider. However, once you're getting pretty good at flying a particular glider you have a wider range of wind speeds you can fly in with a hang glider. The main thing governing your flying time will be just how often you are able to go flying. Then it often can also depend on how often other pilots can go to in order to have a driver. I can go fairly often as I'm retired and I enjoy flying alone. I have a mini-bike I leave in the LZ so I can ride back to launch and get my rig. It may not be too wise to fly alone but if I did not I certainly would not be able to fly as often. Not everyone can just up and go flying mid-week on short notice.
      Hope this info helps! Main tip is to spend lots of time on an entry level glider first before moving to something like a Sport 3. If you don't you'll wish you did.

    What is your hook in weight on the 155?… I am at 195 naked and would be on the top end hooked in.. trying ti decide between the 155 and 170.. flying out West

      At the time I flew it I weighed -220. I felt it handled well. I’ve own a Sport 2 175 in the past. I much prefer the 155. I did not feel heavy on the S3-155. I did not like the handling of the S2-175. I weigh 205 now and would get a 155 over a 170. I hear though that the S3 has good handling compared to the S2. I have not flown a S2-155.

    I am a Chinese pilot, I use Google Translate, and I use moyes malibu2 to learn to fly. Now I want to fly mosquito nrg. Do you think willswing sport3 compare with moyes gecko, which one is more suitable for mosquito nrg? I own a second-hand finsterwalder funfex. I feel that its elevation angle is very large, and its control on the ground is completely different from malibu2.

      I have very little experience with Moyes gliders. Last time I flew one was in 1979. Sorry, can't help with a comparison other than between a Wills Wing U2 and a Sport 3.
      One thing you might be cautious about is moving up to a higher performing glider too quickly. It's best to master a lower performing wing before moving up to higher performance. You can become a better pilot that way.

    Nice video. What do you feel are the most obvious flight characteristic differences between the s2 and the s3?

    • @ChattaroyMan
      @ChattaroyMan  5 років тому

      The only experience I have on a S2 is a 175. The 175 was too big for me. I didn't much like the handling of the S2-175 - too stiff.
      From what I've heard the main difference in the S3s from the S2s is better handling and easier landing. This S3-155 was a very easy glider to fly for me. I also hear that the S3-170 has much better handling than the S2-175 .... as in very much better :)

    • @SVSky
      @SVSky 3 роки тому

      S3 vastly easier to land than S2. I have a 100 hours on S2 and 50 more on S3. Middle and top end not THAT much difference but at low end easier to handle at slow speed. Also lighter pressures at all VG settings.

      @@ChattaroyMan How would compare the handling & flight characteristic between the U2-160 & Sport 3-155 ?

    • @ChattaroyMan
      @ChattaroyMan  3 роки тому

      @@nevillem668 The handling of the S3 155 is easier than the U2 160. The U2 is stiffer. I'm quite at home in my U2 though and the U2 has an edge in L/D and sink rate. On marginal days I'll bet I could stay up longer in the S3 though. The S3's stall speed is slower and it has great handling for working smaller Ts and it's more comfy flying closer to the hill due to being more responsive to control inputs. If a U3 were to come out I'd definitely have to give one a try. I'll be 69 in April. Age will eventually factor into what I fly most often. If I were to get another new glider it'd be a S3 155 ..... I'm happy with my U2 160 now as it's still in great shape.

    • @ChattaroyMan
      @ChattaroyMan  3 роки тому

      @@nevillem668 Boy, I only flew the S3-155 once and did not pay that much attention to weight and ground handling. The day I flew the S3-155 it was soarable so I didn't feel the weight of the glider much. I'm very happy with how the U2-160 ground handles and launches. The static balance is hunky-dorey for me. I can 'easily' set up and launch by myself in 20-25 mph winds.
