  • My name is Jay Fenichel. This video takes you through one of my basic snare drum lessons on double stroke roll hand technique. It seems to many drummers that how to play a drum roll might be pretty straight forward. But if you look deeper, a lot of drummers play drum rolls very inefficiently. When you play an open drum roll how to hold the drum sticks is super important... So pay close attention to that in this drum lesson online for beginners! #opendrumroll #drumrolls #drumrolllesson

Do you agree with my lesson? How do you execute your open rolls?

Thanks for the comment! And yes... but how can you develop an open drum roll without first understanding the fulcrum? Most people squeeze and push. This lesson suggests a more natural and relaxed way.

I've heard the terms 'double bounce' and 'double stroke' open roll both used. Some people state to make 2 distinct strokes, while others indicate bounce is better. Are they both 'proper' techniques? Doesn't an open roll require bounce at fast tempos anyway?

...different terminology but it's the same technique... Whether it is bouncing, or done more physically will depend upon the surface you are playing on. A tighter surface like a pad or a snare will support more of the bounce... a deader surface like a floor tom will require you to muscle out the strokes more.

Yeah this would still be a fulcrum and proper grip lesson. Not an open roll lesson.

Why are you here if you already know more than the teacher? Be thankful and receptive and spread positive vibes, my man.
