How complicated the process is! More and more countries are adopting passport free immigration, India is adopting a process that includes a physical meeting with authorities to verify your identity before one can be enabled for automated gate immigration. @@Avian1397 no, you are wrong, indian tourists arriving in Singapore need not to do anything beforehand. Simply scan their passport at the e-gate if there is a valid visa linked to the same passport, they get immigration clearance on the e-gate.

I was at London Heathrow and Rome Fiumicino airport, you just scan your passport (not available to Indian passport holders) and you exit the airport, no need to see an agent. It will take some time for India to get to this point. Some progress is better than none at all.
For OCI cardholders living abroad, the process requires a personal visit to submit biometrics. Biometrics can be submitted at designated international airports in India or at a Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) during visits to India. Unfortunately, there are no provisions to submit biometrics from outside India at present. This scheme is just a joke played by India on overseas Indians.
India introduces new taxes and tax liability rules almost every year and residency rules are changed sometimes. Even by introducing steps like PAN Aadhar linking etc. new problems regarding proving non residency can arise, even when long settled. It is best to have entry and exit stamps in the passport from Indian immigration. It can become necessary even after 50 years in some cases, based on new rules to be introduced then. The electronic gates, if they are recording and archiving the travel data for Indians and is available to citizens to download on demand from Indian Home/Finance ministry website, one can think differently. There is no guarantee that such data will be possible to be downloaded when you need it.
I emailed this same query to the FTI-TTP team at the Bureau of Immigration yesterday. They replied that the FRROs can generate a log of entries into and exits out of India upon request. These are very early days in the programme, so I’m sure that this feature can and will be made available to users directly in the future.
