Yahtzee gets it. Kids shows can be good for kids and also not insufferable for parents to have to watch. It's especially important these days where you have to keep a close eye on your kids watching habits to make sure they don't accidentally stumble on something they shouldnt see on services like UA-cam.
I mean, PG literally means parental guidance... Not "sit your child in front of it alone"
How I ended up enjoying My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic with my oldest and now Bluey with my youngest.
A good kids show keeps the parents entertained too.
@@athleticgravy1 In the case of Bluey, it can even inspire new revelations as a parent and insight into how their kids learn while playing.
I will say I'd much rather kids watch Bluey than some of the other things out there marketed towards kids, just because Bluey trends towards learning and empathy over gimmicks.

That Laika: Aged Through Blood game made me think of those bike Flash games that populated Newgrounds in the late 2000's.
That is what it is, basically.
I bought it after seeing it here. I like it. I disagree with Yahtzee when it comes to the bits where Laika's momentum slows down. Because the traversal mechanic is so engaging and the music is soothingly folky I think these bits work.
Gee, I wonder what kind of wholesome, positive, optimistic tone Yahtzee will set with this new series!

I like how they even animated Yahtzee with a megaphone; desperately trying to to be heard over the background music.
What I particularly like about the commentary on this one is how obviously _constructive_ it is for the game developers. Feels aimed more at the indie developers to learn how to make their games better rather than primarily a way for the audience to judge if they should buy or not. And when playing indie games instead of AAA games, TBH I think that's the more important type of "review" of these games ❤
The worst thing about the Bluey game being a total cash in is that Australia has a great and passionate Video Game Development scene.
It really could have been great.
I had the exact same question. The short answer is because Ludo Studios (creators of Bluey) don't hold global distribution rights for the IP, BBC do. So really it would of been the BBC who chose the developer and publisher.
Problem being they went with an "established" name (Outright Games), while they have quite a history with devloping games based on existing IP (Ben10, Transformers, Paw Patrol, and Peppa Pig), they aren't that great at making what most would consider "a good game".
So yeah, now we have whatever this is.

@@SyntaxNation86 It's hilarious to me that the "established name" is a studio I've never heard of, in my multiple decades of playing hundreds and hundreds of games.
I guess I've got a bit of a blind spot for shovelcrap developers... one hopes some companies will know better, but I doubt it. Competence is not a requirement for inordinate authority, in our society.
Bluey merch all goes to the British, Australia is actually screwed over with Bluey.
Like we didn't make this game in Australia, the BBC got it made somewhere else.
I'm surprised I haven't seen a comment for the editing of the Jo Jo bits. I appreciate that part the most of this episode.

Bluey is absolutely a staple of my house. I’ve even caught myself watching episodes on my own after the kids pass out. It has no business being as good as it is.
Not sure if Yahtzee realised, but the arrow above your curson in Laika points in the direction your characters head is facing. So if the arrow is pointing straight up, it means you'll land up-right. Facing down means you're upside down etc. I believe it also turns red if you're heading for a bad landing.
Helps let you figure out what way you're facing even with a lot of crap on the screen.
That's cool actually, thanks for the info. I will say though that I'd have preferred if the game told me that before I wasted two hours on the bloody crab boss.
They worked that out eventually on the livestream
People are aware of the indicator, but it's not always that helpful in the middle of a high flying firefight when the game routinely makes the reticle disappear when you're not actively aiming at anything.
The player's eye is most driven to focus on Laika herself. And it should be. Making sure you can tell if she's about to smear her brains like coyote confit on the ground after flipping around ass-over-tea-kettle is an important part of it. But it's just a part. You also need to make sure to angle the bottom of your bike to block return fire from enemies as you go too. Not to mention how none of this is helped by the camera zooming in and out of the action at odd times or Laika getting smeared all over with viscera like she crashed into a raspberry jam factory every time she makes a kill, making it nearly impossible to tell mid-air if she's right-side up and facing left or right.
All of this could be fixed quite easily if they would just recolor the player model more distinctly and lose the excessively obfuscating blood splatter all over it.
Wow I literally 100%ed that game and never noticed the cursor changing lol. Oh well.
I like this a lot! Not super into the song playing in the background the whole time, but the rest of the format is really fun and engaging. Love the mix of gameplay and critiquing 🎉
Yeah i would consider looking into whether the music should stay or not in future installment. I would like to hear more from the games audio. Only food for thought from me second wind.🙂
We've tried it without music before and it just feels too dry. Can try different background tunes to see what works though. Good feedback.@@nicklager1666

If you do have young yahtzees at home why not introduce them to the world of gaming by having them play Putt-Putt. Not perfect but charming to very young kids.
They already play games and apparently enjoy Mario

I’m one of those weird, out of touch people that doesn’t usually like streaming/let’s play style content (I know, skill issue on my part), but this was honestly perfect. Mixing the gameplay commentary with Yahtzee’s voiceover/animations was super engaging and a great way to cover a handful of games that don’t exactly need a full FR episode, but are still worth covering. Would absolutely love to see this continue on as a series in the future.
3:26 this game is the antithesis to everything Bluey stands for & I am apathetic towards it with every fibre of my being.
There was a tremendous amount of zooming to the 'streamer cam' conversations but the bitrate was severely choked to death that I could barely make out Yahtzee's face... and Fortune's Run was fairly impossible to make out anything on screen. Was this a bad youtube encode or a scuffed source? Hopefully you guys get that sorted before the next one :)
Couldve been yahtzee's camera or internet limitation, he might not be able to get a good enough bitrate on either
y'know, that experience with fortune's run is an interesting one, because it's ENTIRELY DIFFERENT from the demo. I played the demo, and it was actually a lot of fun and felt really focused, and it wasn't littered with "DO YOU REMEMBER THING???" either...

Finished Laika a weeks ago. Fantastic game with a few rough edges and a really REALLY good soundtrack.
same, good game, great story, but I really felt that the last levels really dropped off in quality, and the ending was rushed. also, the cutscenes were so screaming fast and abrupt it was like they were embarrassed to show them.

@@bugjams I can't blame him. Because when the most prominient examples of "cute animal characters" also trying to have a more "heavy" story are Sonic and Freedom Planet, and the fact that the former has a fanbase of easily-triggereable snowflakes (even though I could say both share the same fanbase) doesn't help to even consider give a chance to any other similar contender. Not to mention that balancing light-hearted and mature themes is more trickier than it looks, which is something that both of those didn't knew how to do. (or if it was necessary to begin with)
Must say though that story is a reason I'm at least interested on checking out Laika eventually. Didn't played the demo, but from the few things I saw about it it seems that at least Laika feels like it knows it's tone and that it wants to be a more violent game, unlike Freedom Planet which goes with "let's get this diabetes-inducing-furry-shantae into a torture scene where she's electrocuted to the point of being literally burned, and then put her on a bath to remove everything like nothing happened" and "let's turn her new even-more-diabetic-dog-rabbit-friend into a giant monster, force here to fight and try to have a very dramatic death scene, and them she's fine at the end anyway".
I feel that. Absolutely LOVED the game, some scenes really caught me off-guard in the best ways, but at times I felt there were parts missing and the entire finale area was really brief in comparison to everything else. I get what they were trying to go for with the final sequence, but it REALLY pissed me off how the game ended. Excellent journey, but I'm just going to imagine it ended differently. I don't know how they managed it but it felt both too short and too long at the same time, hope we end up getting an expansion or a sequel that knocks down all the dominoes they set up.
Favorite part I'd say, without spoiling, would be the lighthouse. Absolutely fucked me up, such a beautiful moment.
Fortune's Run is what I fear every game I make will be like. I am going to mount it on my wall as a reminder of how low I could go. Although making a messy, mixed bag of a game is better than not making a game at all, so they still have that over me.
I think the game has universally positive feedback, it's in early access or something like that. I mean, I agree that the game looks super convoluted, overdesigned, hard to get into, but it seems to be doing quite alright. It kinda reminds me of Cruelty Squad, which is intentionally super jank but was the first hit game developed in Godot
I'd advice you to just let it all go. The more you think about it the more it weighs on your conscience. The less obsessed you are with making a game just like the ones you like _or_ *avoiding* making a game like the ones you don't like, the better. Best case: you create something like Pizza Tower, worst case: you make a mess, but learn something from it.
Fortune's run is really good, it's just not very well served by being put in front of an otherwise uninterested stranger for an hour.
I fully believe that parents that don't like Bluey only have that opinion because they have to face their own terrible parenting decisions 😅

Thank you for making this recap of the live stream. I was only able to catch bits and pieces. As a dad and Bluey lover for all the reasons Yahtz does, I am glad I got this take from him so I know I won't have to ruin christmas with a bad game.
Laika feels like that one stunt racing browser game we all played during IT class.
Just with story.
I really dig this format. It's a unique blend of critique and stream highlight reel, two great tastes that I did not expect to go great together, but it works.

One bit of feedback, if I may - perhaps you could add a brief conclusion at the end, rather than just stopping as you do here. Maybe by saying which game was your favourite?

I agree. I totally understand the appeal of streams, but their length and pacing isn't for me. I much prefer these sort of edited best-hits kind of videos.

I did not expect Garth Merenghi's Darkplace to be referenced, but I am all the happier for it.
I did bring up the busyness of laika to the devs and suggested an option in the settings for an indicator to let you know that you'll land flat on the surface after playing the original demo. They mentioned before that maybe they'll add it in, hopefully that's sooner rather than later

I really enjoy these videos. I tuned into and/or watched the vods of the livestreams, but the shorter edited versions provide further insight into them via the short post commentary. Making both valuable.

I really like these highlight reels. I usually don't listen to entire streams and this almost feels like a fully ramblomatic video with a looser tone. Gr8 stuff!

Anyone at Second Wind played "Colony Ship" by Iron Tower? Fantastic throwback RPG, but instead of throwing back to an SNES JRPG, it throws back to Fallout 1&2! Fantastic mechanics, world building, and writing!
I find it extremely funny that it's the second video this week that quotes "I know writers who use subtext, and they're all cowards" on this channel. the first one was Darren's Backdrop, of course
I mean what else could Yahtzee say about a game that has nothing but subtext?
Love this format! I hope that editing these down isn't too much work to be sustainable, because it would be great to see lots more!

So apparently Worldless is super-duper fun once you figure it out, but it can only really be done by looking external sources, and apparently, the devs _intended_ that. It's like Tunic's confusing instructions turned up to eleven.
I really like the editor's humour in this video. I think the streams should lean into the editor as a character. Always keeping him and the UA-cam channel in mind during the streams would be 👌
Great editing! I like these compilations / summaries of the streams. I watched both of these original streams, but its nice to see the highlights again, and with additional commentary and funny editing. Loved the classic simpsons references, and that Ocelot rowr!
As nice as the theme for this video series is, i think having it playing quietly in the background is a bit distracting though - i dont think it needs music for an 18 minute video so densely packed with things to listen to.
"Worldless" reminds me of "Vector Man" on the Sega Genesis, both in look and game play. Anyone else remember that one?
Agreed, like they went Vector Man + minimalism + constellations/stars for the theme.

My two year old going on three has started to get the hang of holding a controller and playing Kirby. Kids can achieve pretty big goals if they can safely fail working towards those goals.

Looooove this. Been a ZP/FR fan for over a decade but I take such delight when Yahztee can speak his mind on broader subjects than a single game and just generally isn’t bound to the fast-paced ZP/FR format

Fortune's Run is great because every single bit of it is just, so very clearly, "Stuff I know is cool and like enough to do a version of," filtered into making a mad game where you can play Titanfall, Deus Ex and Jedi Academy at the same time.
Laika looks interesting, might check it out myself.
Wish you a lot of fun on it when you do. Like other indie games, such as Clash: Artifacts of Chaos, Soulstice, Genokids and Cookie Cutter, a game like Laika would benefit very much from word being spread on it.
I really hate streams I find. One of my favorite streamer edits his vods and uploads them, which is great. No boring stuff I don't care about.
Thank you so much for some edited content around the games you actually played on stream. This was one annoying thing on Escapist. They filled my feed with unedited content where they talked about barely anything to do with the games they were playing or other things I didn't care about. So glad you can do this kind of stuff! ❤

This is a great series! As someone who does not watch any live streams at all, maybe once a month for 30 min at most (If I wanted to watch one like the one with Commander Sterling then I watch the recording), I feel that I miss insight with the random assortment of games played. So a compilation with a bit of editing is a perfect summary video that is well worth it and now know about more games that I thought I would've missed, brilliant solution! (Wonder if you'll ever have on people make games)

Stories with some interestingly ambiguous/interpretable parts can be great! But Worldless looks like it straight up asks players to do the storyteller's job.

I don’t have time to watch the big title games that Yahtzee regularly reviews . A casual review with actual gameplay footage are really useful in finding smaller games to play. Big thanks for trying the Blue game. Such a shame it sucks
This is a great alternative for someone like me who will rarely catch a stream. Some different games (than ones that would get a full FR episode), edited down highlights. Really good watch.

Nobody ever remembers the wacky fighting game Ballz, but Yhatzee or someone at Second Wind does. Which is a nice reminder for myself that that game wasn’t just a childhood fever dream

Yahtzee going "BOING BOING BOING BOING" on the trampoline brought back amusing memories of his annoyance with the Dizzy games.
I love how turning around in a 2D motorbike game seems innovative, yet Evel Kinevel on GBC (the game all these 2D motorbike games are based on/inspired by, the OG as it were) had a turn around button.
7:15 There’s actually an indicator on the crosshairs for your current orientation in Laika.
10:15. At least the universe is teal and orange and not _(activates high-pitched gravelly German voice)_ BROWN AND TEAL AND ORANGE
This is fantastic and I love it and want more.
I don't think you need the giant vibrating cartoon stick figure holding a megaphone to indicate the audio is narrated instead of livestreamed, it's weird and we can figure that out from context.
And I don't think you should zoom in on streams of people's heads if you don't have the source video above 160x120.
But otherwise I love the idea of an editor picking out all the funny bits of a long Yahtzee livestream and then maybe narrating in more funny or interesting bits, along with clips of actual gameplay.

While I admit that the vibrating wasn't necessary, there were comments back in the Escapists version of this that we need an indicator for when Yahtzee's voice over is talking compared to the original stream.

Glad to see this continue, like the idea and format overall, so thanks for doing so! :) I will add as a minor critique, I don't love the Yahtzee w/ Microphone graphic that pops up while he is talking. It feels obscuring and a bit redundant to me. Obviously I'm just one voice and others might find it very helpful, so grain of salt and all that. Thanks regardless for the work you have all clearly put in, in a stressful time no less!
Well, when they didn't have that graphic, people complained that they couldn't tell the difference between Yahtzee's streamed and scripted commentary. Can't make everyone happy all at once, I guess.
I appreciate the graphic differentiating when the audio is from the stream vs voiceover, but I agree that it was a bit obscuring. Maybe just needs to be shrunk down a little through in my opinion.

I think it was a great critique you brought up, and timely. They're working out the kinks with all the new brandings, graphics, and this was one that even on the previous channel was still being trialed, so I think it was great feedback! Just wanted to add my two cents on possible fixes :)
