Brian, down here, in December derbies, we usually put 15-20 spots in the boat on a C-rig or Sassy shad, 1st thing in the morning. Once that bite slows (usually around 8-9am), we hit those NORTH BANK grassbeds in the short, EAST-WEST situated sloughs off the main lake (from the narrows, down) with nothing but a flipping stick in hand, with a coupla kicker heads (largemouths) in mind. Pick your poison, but the Hematoma Beaver on a 1oz tungsten NEVER disappoints on Lay.

They're ALWAYS biting on the Lower Coosa! I'm so glad I grew up here. December is awesome on Lay Lake. You'd better have FIVE of those fat magnums to get paid in December on Lay. I've had 3-100+ bass days on the Lower Coosa, with who knows how many 75-80 fish days. 2 of those 100+ days were in December. My best spot is a big, old, one-eyed FAT GIRL that went 7-1. I had a 6-2 spot featured in Bassmaster Magazine a few years back. December fishing is usually 🔥. A pearl white Sassy Shad or Tiny Fluke on a ³/¹⁶oz ball head gets the nod when the bait is thick. Otherwise, Grady's Glo-Stik or a baby brush hog on C-rig will put 50+ in the boat real quick, IF you hit the right weather and current generation times together. Don't forget the old Li'l George and Silver Buddy, either! (Cut that TRD worm in HALF, then tip it with just a little ORANGE) You did well. 👍🏽

Question for you B Lat. Does it get any better than catching a fat ass Coosa river spotted bass? Logan Martin and Lay lake are my home waters. I’ve never caught a smallmouth so I really can’t compare the fight to anything but a white or striped bass. Spotted bass wins that battle in my opinion. I grew up on Mitchell. I've fished them all. From Weiss to Jordan. I've got a 7-1 spot and several over 6, but the meanest bass I ever caught was a 5-10 spot I caught WAAAAY up the back end of Yellowleaf Creek, on Lay, back up into Wash Creek, in a 2 man boat one day. That one fish was hands down the baddest black bass I ever met. I caught it on a white ½oz Lunker Lure buzzbait, on the original Team Diawa 6.4:1 reel w/17lb Trilene XT, on a 7' Team Diawa Ricky Clunn fiberglass crankin' rod. That bass stretched that (rather substantial) reel & rod setup TO THE MAX! Anything less and he would've busted it. I've caught several bigger, but that bad boy was ALL Coosa River MAGNUM Spotted Bass!!!

I watch you when you catch a fish and you seem to try and wear it out and get it in as slow as possible, circle the boat, handspool it, and you fight a fish for a LONG time. I watch Scott Martin and he's reeling the fish in and getting it in the boat asap. Do you find you land more doing it slow as opposed to getting it in the boat asap or have you just always done it that way?
I am a tournament angler my self and we had a high school tournament on Lay and it was terrible. I fished fast slow and anything in between. I only caught one . What do I throw on those days?
Fish your strengths on tough days. Whatever you have the most confidence in your ability to catch bass with is what will usually be most effective. That said, I always downsize on tough days. That's a mathmatical thing. The smaller your lure, the greater number of fish that can get it in their mouths. Also, use every advantage you can; rattles, dyes, and especially scents. I never wet plastics without a rattle in them or, AT LEAST, BANG sprayed on them.
