What is Hegemony?

This video explains the meaning of Hegemony and it's relation to Literary Theory and Criticism.
Hegemony is a communicative process in which a dominant group( may be a government on its own subjects, a country over other countries, a race against other races, a culture over other cultures) maintains its power by using various channels and resources. It is not a fixed condition but requires constant adaptation to remain uncoercive. A counter hegemony aims to create conditions for alternative ideas and practices to flourish, challenging the dominance of the elite.
