Dr Phil, please discuss with Rick Alan Ross the cults that are more “invisible” but are amongst us, even come to people’s doorsteps like the Jehovah’s Witnesses. I was born and raised in this “high control” group, but left in 2019. One of the reasons was I found out about the scandal of many, many mishandled child sexual abuse cases. I was appalled, because we cult members were never told about it. And when a JW asks questions and does research - he can get disfellowshipped and shunned for doing so. The SHUNNING is very distressing to the victim and the practice destroys families. It needs to stop 🛑 !!
Reminds me when I was LDS. I would constantly ask questions. Things weren’t adding up so I did my own research. Most of it was from the church site itself. When I asked about certain things they said don’t believe it. It’s anti-Mormon teachings….
Their empathy has been erased by the brainwashing. (The leader had no empathy to begin with.) They can no longer imagine the child's terror. Being shut in a closet would be no problem for them, why should it be for him? TL;DR They're monsters.
As FogWeaver said brainwashing (as well as sleep deprivation etc.) has far more of an impact than people think. It can literally lead a great person, a great parent even, to do a complete 180. People don't realise how vulnerable we are to such things. There is an element of denial too, as accepting that brainwashing, sleep deprivation and other methods they use to break you is terrifying. It is much more comforting for people to imagine that those people were just evil or bad or broken, rather than accept that even someone like them could become the same if exposed to such things. The fact is that in the right circumstances someone using these methods could turn you and I into that. Scary, but true
11:10 yea i fully agree with that woman on this. I think many of these parents play the "i got manipulated" card waaaay to easy. Just like these mothers who whipped their some-months old babies because they felt they had to out of "fear or manipulation" while they even admit it's wrong. I don't get that, they should be held accountable for their own actions as responsible adults, no excuses. In the end it's also these people who chose to enter these cults.
I agree there needs to be accountability to an extent, but you seriously underestimate what these methods do to people. They are victims too. I'm not saying to view them as blameless and innocent, but you can't view them the same as you would someone who has abused their child without undergoing such things that can literally turn anyone, even me and you into something we could never imagine we could be. For a metaphor easier for us to understand think of an abuser who in in full control of their faculties vs one with dementia, or serious mental illness. There is still a level of blame to an extent, but it is very different to someone abusing their child when they are perfectly sane etc.
Part of me actually hopes there was no adult in that closet. The idea of an adult in there with the kid is very scary when those adults verge between outright abusers and so disconnected and brainwashed that they would stand by.
Sexual abuse in the mainstream Mormon church is very very high and the suicide rate is extremely high and the depression is very high and the women are treated like second class citizens and they cater to the men and they have to do everything the men talk about or they get abused and the children get abused too and if you go to the bishop and talk about what's happened they side with the perpetrator there is one woman I talk to that was raised LDS and she had a horrific experience with the bishop and the man that was hurting her and the bishop took the perpetrator side and so it just damaged her now I'm not LDS but I live in Utah and I've been around these people all my life my parents came for back East for work and my father taught at the University of Utah and I can tell you I've listened to stories that left the church I've listened to stories that the people that are in the church and this is in mainstream Mormonism and they do practice polygamy some of them do some of them don't but nothing is ever said so it just doesn't happen down in you know in Arizona and the border of Utah it happens here in salt lake it happens all over the state and so anyway I just thought I would share that
This is horrible that these men can do this and get away with it I guess it's hard for us who have not been up in the caults I feel so bad for this children warman Jeff's was the worse
I was a member of the worldwide church of god. I left. After what the ministry did to a young mother. But it was hard like I had come to a new society. From language on down I losty husband and almost loss my children it was horrible

That child being put in the closet was heartbreaking. That was not angry crying but the screams of a terrified child.
I’m so glad he said Scienctology

Thank you Phil and Rick for educating the public about cults. If I knew this information, I would never have joined the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Lies of omission.
I cannot watch such traumatizing terror put upon. Two-year-old How could ADULTS allow this to happen?????

Something’s wrong when you have to live in a compound! At least in the USA!

Cult#45 comes to mind.
Cult #46 you mean?
I'm sorry but how on earth is this allowed to continue in your own backyard?!
This is truly horrifying especially locking that poor 2 year old child in a cupboard and how she tries to call it time out. My hat!

The hypocrisy in this discussion is excruciating. You cannot accept superstitious nonsense religion and speak against cults. They are both wrong.
No, religion worships god. Cults worship men. I see what you mean but society needs religion.

You can leave most religions- key difference.
