    The one very clear thing that stood out far and above everything else in this episode Mr Foreman, is your forthright formidably resolute fortitude.
    You good sir are an inspiration to many, although albeit somewhat scary at times; as we feared for your life.
    It almost seems like this dastardly beast; devised in hell itself 'should have' been able to separate (unscrew/unbolt?) from it's upper housing-part. That lower larger section infers a total lack of design 'forward thinking' by the boffins-of-the-day (whoever designed this fiendish thing).
    Perhaps at that time the thought was "Noone would Ever try to remove this from such a poor dilapidated ancient vehicle; eons from now".
    But they hadn't heard of you. Mind you, I would have thought that with Len's* "input" to the venerable firm they would have guessed there's no stopping an Ozzie, eh? :)
    * I speak of the Gunbarrel-famed Mr Beadell, and his ability to pursuade the venerable firm's boffins to take note of his suggestions/advice, and thus provide him with suchly modified vehicles that met his modest requirements.
    PS interesting table setting at the start, and the slow approach thereto. One of Wilm's Master Pieces methinks?? :)

    You do realise that you can service the relay by just removing its innards. I did everything you did to try to remove mine and ended up cutting a square in the top and bottom of the chassis and removed sleeve and all. I plated it over and fitted a Rover P5 power steering unit. This does away with all the vagueness of Land Rover steering. I also invested in a plasma cutter and it saves an awful lot of time and blades. Great videos, thanks.

    • @ForemanAndWilmsAdventures
      @ForemanAndWilmsAdventures  4 роки тому

      Greetings Chris, cutting it out was to be plan Z.2. The reason I chose to remove it was if it wasn't going to come out meant there was rust and I was fearful that without seeing the condition of it's housing it might all disintegrate somewhere down the line. The P5 upgrade is intriguing as is the plasma cutter though I might not have an immediate use for that now.

      Foreman and Wilms Adventures Thanks for the reply, my relay sleeve was rusty as hell, so much so that the tube was bulging. I may be guilty of a little deep water wading, just over the bonnet. However once inside the box section I noticed there is a heavy plate with taped holes welded inside the chassis, so with the two bolts at the top as well I’m certain that whatever rust was inside wouldn’t be a danger to steering.
      I had doubts about the plasma cutter but now that I have one, it’s the go to tool every time. With a little practice and a form to run the torch head along you’d be surprised how clean the cuts are.
      I love your videos and whilst I also watch This Old Tony between the two of you I always start my day with a smile.
      The P5 Hydrosteer unit is an easy fix I could send pics if you’re interested. Cheers Chris

    Love your vids. What a hoot. laughed all the way through. One thing though - ditch the gasless mig welder and go gas mig. You will never regret it, just so much easier for a learner to do a good weld.

    That was a tale of triumph. The bugger is out, the cross member and relay mount is a mess, time for some fresh box steel and tube me thinks. Better start practising that welding. Looking forward to the next episode.

    I have never before seen anyone cursed with such a horrible job, you did everything right, but that inanimate object just didn’t want to play the game. I heard of one bloke that got his steering relay out after one month of banging and jacking and soaking with penetrating fluid, kept thinking maybe I should start spraying mine with penetrating fluid now in case I have to work on it in 5 years time. Good to see the safety gear in use, your almost to the standard where you could become a model for a wphs poster! You will just need to provide copies of your relevant accreditation’s, work method statements, job safety analysis, pre start meetings signed and dated and approved by your supervisor-Summer?Cricket?

    I have removed many of theses steering relays easily. All you need is vibration and lubrication from atf mixed with acetate Best penetrating oil 50 -50 mix leave for a day or so . Then get your air chisel or stationary chuck sds drill and a blunt chisel or drill shaft 10mm and hit the underside of the relay rust will rain down for a minute or to and the relay will jump out of it's hole . Never failed me yet . Vibration will move almost anything Phil Price

      An intriguing suggestion, one that never crossed my mind but well worth a try if I find myself in a similar position. Thanks for the tip. The idea that came to me after the Woeful tale was to cut off the retaining tabs from the chassis so the relay could be rotated to crunch up the rust and gently 'hammered out', might be dreaming on that. Hopefully anyone reading these comments can add another option to the toolbox. Cheers Phil.

    Very interesting,one would ask,did it really need to come out?It probably did,by what you uncovered with your exploration,all the"crud"that had gathered inside the cross member etc.A new relay will be one less place for any play to creep into the steering system for sure👍Anyway,it's a good old Landy,it's worth doing right.And don't worry,with some practice,those welds will start to look better.I'm going to have to go and have another look,I don't remember seeing an argon bottle,I gather you're gasless,that's always a bit harder.All the best👍🙂

    • @ForemanAndWilmsAdventures
      @ForemanAndWilmsAdventures  4 роки тому +1

      Greetings Wayne, chances are the steering relay was probably fine though hard to ascertain without a test drive but now we'll never know. The seemingly irreplaceable front cross member was in shonky condition so I wanted to be sure the living quarters for the relay wasn't about to disintegrate. As for the MIG gas, there is a rather lame excuse appearing in the next film for not using it. Actually cut out the word 'rather' and re-insert 'very' lame.

    Ah yes, a bloody land rover! After She Who Must Be Obeyed had a rather forceful discussion with a power pole with the series 111 wagon I cut the entire left hand front chassis out from the centre point above the diff housing and welded in a replacement ( an overnight job). By the way the cummins 4BT into a series 11 SWB using Toyota FJ 40 running gear is proceeding slowly.

    Mmmm bugger, that went from bad to worse, a total shitstorm escalation :-( We had similar problems a few videos back but fortunately the chassis tube that the relay mounts into let loose due to corrosion (from an exploded battery) and the entire job lot came out in one go (with some help from a sledgy). I cut the same section out of a spare chassis and welded it in before fitting a replacement relay, good solution in the end. At the time it seemed like the long way home but... having seen yours, we got off light and cutting the relay mount/relay out of yours may have been a good way to go... hindsight vision is always 20/20. MIG stands for "Metal In Gap" doesn't it? Anyone can weld, just some are better at it than others. Love your work!

    Dear Mr Foreman, I have no technical knowledge whatsoever, and don't understand most of what you do, but I thoroughly enjoy your delivery. Keep up the good work and I hope the next phase is easier for you. I'm also curious to know what is behind the door which has Cricket jumping like his namesake! :)

    • @ForemanAndWilmsAdventures
      @ForemanAndWilmsAdventures  4 роки тому +1

      Greetings Diane, the mystical door leads to a small area full of storage boxes but the real intrigue for Cricket is the roof above where rats sometimes live. Her little jumps are an indication she wants to go 'uptop' to go hunting for vermin. I think in part_9 of the series we see her up there at the beginning looking for foes to fight.

      Hey there. I know of your channel. I watched your steering box saga for some tips so I'm less likely to botch up my coming project which I did anyway but all makes for a good story. Unlike my steering relay my steering box was in better condition without a swarm of ball bearings jiggling freely about. I thought I had already subscribed but that will be rectified now.

    Top Episode - Congratulations on your survival as well as overcoming The Bastard! A great watch - I had visions of your Ford tractor up ending on its front and being raised through the front edge of the barn's roof...God that was one stubborn steering relay. Luckily with mine I used the same methods, but managed to borrow the same sort of rig from Julian Schoolheifer here in the UK - he has just restored the 1st Production Land-Rover JUE 477 - and thank God it worked first time. I found that the vertical chassis tube in which the relay sits had a vertical split in its side wall - had to buy a new one from Carl and Dale Radford www.radfordbulkheads.lrsoc.com/ and they supply new ingredients for chassis and bulkhead / firewalls for your Series One. Keep up the great work!

      So far it looks like the bulkhead on my old truck needs 2 new pillar posts but otherwise all other panels look repairable. That steering relay was a monster. I like your grease idea for the brake lines from a previous comment. I haven’t finalised anything there so will take your advice and do it.

    The front cross member that houses the steering relay is available from Radfordbulkheads.lrsoc.com in the UK. They have them in stock and I believe they do ship worldwide. More information is available from the Land Rover Series One Club. I also made a jig to press my relay out. I had to resort to an 8 ton press.

      Crikey Ian! That was a good tip for the future. There website was a bit average but it does look like not all is lost for finding bits. Another challenge I have is a side cover plate for a 1957 series 1 Land Rover. Similar to the series 2 without the little dowel. If you know where to find one of those I am listening. Cheers.

      Rust! Fear of rust. If it was jammed in there then there is a good chance of mischief down the road. Although there was great hardship I now know the front crossmember is less likely to collapse off the chassis taking the relay with it.
