While that is true. He wasn't there to kill him.
He was there to make Puss understand that he needs to stop being wasteful with his lives and appreciate the last one he has or "Death will come knocking" so he plays into that fear aspect by chasing him down until he realises it. As he keeps joking about death even to his face when it could happen.
Its also why he keeps talking about how he loves the smell of fear and when they run. Because he wants them to be scared of death as it's always there. But he stood up at the end and thought his fears so he let him go. With the reminder that he WILL come back one day as Death always does.

@@Saelria He was, he states it multiple times. He's even angry when he sees him not afraid of him anymore. He wanted to kill him first because he thinks that 9 lives for cats are not "fair", and second and most importantly because he has wasted 8 of them for nothing, without understanding how precious those lives were. Never in the movie Death makes you think that he wants to change Puss' behaviour. He could have killed him the first time, but he likes playing with his "food". Still, I don't think he is a "villain". Maybe a sadist, but he gave Puss 8 chances to learn not to be an idiot but he didn't. Way more chances than a normal being.

Wolf whistle literally made Puss, the cat who couldn't be afraid of jumping from any height or of fighting anyone, to fear taking a single step, and by making a fight with a fodder character feel like one wrong move and Wolf would be behind you to finish you off. He doesn't need to have a evil laugh or an evil plot... His presence tells you, "I, death, will come for you, you can either give up your life, or I will gladly take it"

I just love the actual fact that Death is merely treating Puss as his "plaything", because Death cannot be calculated, it is a mere concept, and a concept's power could be considered "infinite".
That whistle is to make Puss more and more anxious by what is coming to him very rapidly.
Since Death was never seen before, Puss couldn't know the danger of probably hearing a whistle close by.

I like how they took the concept of the Wolf, the most common, mundane, uninteresting fairy tale villain ever, and made him extremely fascinating, powerful, and terrifying. They played into his aesthetic perfectly, characterizing him as real predator (get it?) yet retaining his legendary presence. Being a wolf also has parallels to Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of funeral ordinances, who had the head of a jackal/wolf. In Egyptian mythology, Anubis would also judge the worthiness of a soul entering the afterlife, similar to how Death in this movie condemns Puss for squandering his previous eight lives. Of course, it also plays into the usual cat vs. dog trope in most cartoons, except this time, it's much more terrifying. Not only is it brilliant, but it also coverts a familiar character into a new threat, making us even more afraid of the Big Bad Wolf compared to his typical fairy tale incarnation.
Speaking of fairy tales, making the connection between the Wolf and Death paints those original stories in a much different light as well. HOW did they manage to make this character so conceptually interesting?

I didn't pay attention to the soundtrack while watching the film, but the thumping, conspicuous rhythm of the music really fits Death's "slow but steady" thing. Throughout the entire movie I was even freaked out by Death appearing in front of Puss in Boots. Like it is legitimately a terrifying concept of having Death hunt you down for sport; appearing at random while whistling an eerie, airy, incomplete lullaby and toying with you. Another thing is that the animation style changing to a more stop motion esc feel during the fight scenes is genius. The scenes are more intense, all the actions seem more deliberate and it makes a character getting hit a much bigger deal.

That said, The Wolf has got to be what has stolen the show for me! I think it's funny how the big bad wolf and the 3 bears are already in-universe characters in shrek, but these are different characters from them.
In headcanon, I consider the wolf we know from the original movie to be the Big Bad Wolf of the 3 little pigs story. Maybe this is the big bad wolf of little red's story, or something else all together (avoiding potentially spoilers).
Again in the original, Goldilocks' 3 bears are seen in cages where Donkey is being held. Later in the movie, Papa Bear is seen in Shrek's Swamp comforting Baby Bear. Due to the absence of Mama bear and the presence of her pelt in Lord Farquad's Decorum, we can assume that this iteration of her is deceased.
I'm glad they make use of their characters, even if at the moment it seems like a bit of a retcon or something for the 3 bears.

Literal, straight-up death. I think the point was you to go 'wait, but isn't there already a big bad wolf in this world'? as a clue that this wolf wasn't what he seemed. I think this wolf is only 'big bad' sort in his narrative role + the archetype he occupies. Still, 'the big bad wolf is death itself' is probably one of my personal favorite character concepts of all time!

In Mexico and Spain, the holy death is known that whoever meets her while she is alive usually whistles a melody that is a warning that you will soon be about to die, a whistle heard in your last minutes of life. This is just as good as the whistle song in Kill Bill. They both got that same foreboding atmosphere

Death is probably the best antagonist made this decade hands down. He's family friendly technically, but wow was he intimidating anyway.

death could have killed him any time, in any way, without showing himself, but he did the whole teatrics because he was pissed at somebody not valuing life and mocking Death, just to humble him and teach him a lesson he is not going to forget for the rest of his last life, he is not a villain or a bad/evil guy, he is just showing some tough love

It's been such a while i didn't saw a villain of that level of badassitude and creepiness tbh, last time i had these vibes by Dreamworks, was since first time i saw Sheen and Tai Lung villains from Kung fu Panda

Wow, I never thought that Death would be such a good villain! The theme and the whistle is so well done! Wagner Moura did such a great job with the voice acting!
