I had the honor of seeing Cathy do Peter Pan. She was the best I'd ever seen. Absolutely captured the part perfectly. I met her afterwards and my son was too shy to ask for her autograph. She asked his name and told him to come around the table, gave him a big hug and some pixy dust, took time to talk with him and let me take their picture together. She signed his sword and to this day (he is 14 now) he still remembers what an amazing experience it was. She's awesome on and off stage.
Cathy Rigby's Peter Pan was the very first live theatre performance I attended at 4 yrs old in 1990! I was absolutely mesmorized by it all. I was in the isle singing every word & dancing every step (as well as a 4 year old could). I that is what started my passion for theatre. I was able to see her farewell performance a few years ago and was able to meet her & tell her how she inspired me to get involved in theatre and she signed the playbill for me. It was amazing. To me she is Peter Pan. :)
Whoever put this video on should put the whole movie on!!! I lost the vhs one 6 years ago and i grew up with that show and i would luv 2 see it again! Thanks!
yeah, i have the dvd of this, and my audio is not off. she is definately singing this herself. i was beyond lucky enough to actually see this cast perform. it was beautiful! i felt like a kid again! a truly touching performance.
My first theatrical experience was in a 1975 production as a Lost Boy. I saw the Sandy Duncan version in 1979 and couldn't forget it....Fast forward to 1992, and I went on tour as Smee-with the aforementioned Duncan's beautiful Neverland set. Our Tiger Lily, Dana Solimando, re-created her role in Cathy Rigby's version a decade later. The technical advancements are astounding when one sees the flying ballet! Iit is jaw-dropping. I cannot imagine what it will look like in another 10 years!
My school, Floyd Central, just rented the official Broadway set for this show. It's amazing. We also have all the same ZFX effects used in the show. Pretty crazy stuff!
This scene must have been so much fun to do. It looks like fun, swinging about like that. Really makes you want to fly again, just like it did when I was a kid. ^w^
I saw a behind-the-scenes documentary on how they filmed this before the show closed and Cathy had said that the harness she's wearing to help her fly is more comfortable and she's able to do TONS more than she could before.
This company did the flight effects when I played Wendy, and they were GREAT! I felt so safe and secure. The harnesses are actually really comfortable, all things considered. As far as Rigby vs. Martin, I feel like the Rigby production was amazing. The flight effects were amazing and Rigby was a nimble and boyish Peter. HOWEVER, I prefer Mary Martin, even with her age and the lack of technology. There's just something so winning about her portrayal that can't be captured by anyone else.
Fuck, Cathy is so amazing. I was in a production of Peter Pan and this play has a special place in my heart, and Cathy always gives me chills she does this with such grace
i was just watching this earlier this morning, and i still feel like i wanna fly with Peter XDDDDDDDDDDDDDD i love the songs specially I Gotta Crow, I'm Flying, I won't Grow Up and Ugh-A-Wha ^^
hi I have seen two productions of this play with male Peter Pan one in 1979 in Louisville Kentucky and one in the late 80's in dreamland Oakbrook Chicago
There's different spots hidden around the stage that have little pots of glitter she grabs. One can be seen when she lands by the portrait at 1:36. Before the camera angle switches, watch the hand closest to the camera and she goes in to grab a handful while she sings to Wendy, Michael and John.
If there are boys who can play Billy Elliot, there are boys who can play Peter. Jeremy Sumpter gave a hugely committed performance in the recent movie version.
This is FANTASTIC! I've been a big fan of the MAry Martin TV performance (the 2nd one) since it first was on TV (I was 5 at the time). But I think I may even like THIS better!!! Does anyone know if the whole thing is on video or DVD?
Oh, hey, question for eveyone who has played Peter or the one of the darlings in a production---how the heck do you "hook up" to the wire to fly without the audience seeing? I always wondered about that. Thanks!
@pilchard96 Actually, it's quite possible. HARD, but possible. They were not dubbed because this was recorded in front of a live audience and stage actors are never dubbed. They practice til they get it right!
@pilchard96 Actually I've been in a production of this show. You actually have to sing and say lines while doing this. It's incredibly hard to do and it takes a lot of practice. This show was done in front of a live audience and therefore is a real production. Cathy Rigby and the 'Darling' children had to work hard to be able to do this. Please don't degrade these actors by insinuating that they are dubbed.
That makes sense that she was lipy singing cuz it would be pretty hard flying AND singing at the same time but I saw a production of Peter Pan last summer and there was no way that the actress could've been lip singing i love cathy rigby as peter pan though!
Everyone is hooked up onstage, with a subtle use of old-fashioned distraction. The children are hooked up while Peter is singing "I'm Flying." The audience is watching him instead of the children, who all walk backwards upstage to the closed nursery drapes and get 'hooked up' that way. Peter is hooked up, I believe, right before the song starts, when the lights are turned off and the kids all run back to bed when Nana is barking.
@LadyGagaStatenIsland mainly tradition but the harness is a lot more painful for boys than it is girls...however over the summer i did see threesixty entertainment's production and Peter was played by a boy. But that one had very little music in it and was more based on the original play.
I think ever thing you say has already been covered. The reasons you give I agree explain why the role would often be played by a woman. As I've already said, however, there are male sopranos (usually called countertenors) who could play the role, but as far as I know, that's never happened. My point is that it's time it did.
@peoplelover13 Well, all your reasons for having Peter played by a woman make sense, except for "it's tradition." It would be interesting to see Peter actually played by a boy or a young man. There are adult males who naturally sing in the soprano range. They're called countertenors.
I would hate to be the one who's job it Is to clean off all the glitter after the show. Where was she getting all the glitter from. I didn't see her stick her hands in her pockets or anything
@ruggerdgmail "tradition is the main reason the role is always played by a woman." I think you're right about that. As traditions go, I think it's not something to get all worked up about but nevertheless stupid, and the "always" aspect of it is sort of offensive. Only females can be a Peter Pan? Why?
its not really tradition for a woman to play peter. im not judgingher acting skills but i just dont think a girl should play the part of a boy. but you still have some good points
@libbychecks The fact that I personally would not be a good choice for playing Peter Pan in a flying rig is irrelevant. There are plenty of males and females who could play the part. I'm not offended by females playing the part. What is offensive is that males NEVER play the part. Why? That it's become a tradition is no excuse. That just begs the question. If it were Pamela Pan always played by a male, how would you sit with that?
The reason women play Peter Pan is because the character is a young boy who never grows up, so to have an adult male actor with a broken voice playing the role wouldn't make sense. An actual little boy could play Peter, but professional productions that want an experienced, professionally trained adult to play the role therefore have to employ a woman (smaller body and higher voice like a prepubescent boy) Sorry this is in reply to a comment a year ago.. I just thought it needed to be said :L
Peter's harness is different from the one s the children wear and goes between the legs. Anatomically, Peter s flying harness cannot be worn by a male without serious discomfort or damage. .

this is marvelous - cathy rigby is amazing! This gives me goosebumps, it is so good.
i saw her as Peter Pan first row a few years ago!! best experiance ever!! the show was amazing
I went to see the show last night and i got to meet her she signed my poster she is such an amazing actress i will never be too old for peter pan.
I've loved this play forever! I used to perform it in my living room with my sister when I was six. :D
Whoever put this video on should put the whole movie on!!! I lost the vhs one 6 years ago and i grew up with that show and i would luv 2 see it again! Thanks!

i had goosebumps the whole time!

Cathy is amazing!

i loooooooooove Cathy Rigby!

Just announced!! Cathy Rigby wil lauch a brand new US tour of Peter Pan in August 2011!
If there are boys who can play Billy Elliot, there are boys who can play Peter. Jeremy Sumpter gave a hugely committed performance in the recent movie version.

OMG I SAW THIS WHEN CATHY RIGBY PLAYED PETER PAN

im doing htis musical for my school.
In the original production of Peter Pan during J.M Barrie's time, Peter was played by a woman. It's a tradition.
im in this play. im a pirate its fun!!! :-D
what happened to liza?
Ive met Cathy before
Is this her voice?
bbr48 yes

it's a play of corse there not really flying
I think they cast a boy as Peter for a show in London... apparantly the reviews were terrible! It might be too big of a role for a child.
swinging maybe but not flying

LOL why this they cast a girl for a male role? she sings like a girl, talks like a girl, and looks like a girl! why didnt they cast a male?
gay luigi
umm no cathy did much a better job
i hate how peter is always caste as a woman!
