I was a teenager in San Bernardino during the surfer craze of the '60s... what a wonderful time to grow up! We had dances every Friday night at the YMCA, and it was pure delight. No internet, no cellphones, just lots of friends having a great time. We loved going to Newport or Balboa Beach on weekends. 🏝🏝🏝

I learned to play this song exactly like their drummer at 13/14 years of age. I practiced for many months and started playing it at street dances in the summer. One day my father, who was a drummer, had received a call from a Talent Scout about my drumming. My Dad couldn't figure out how I had learned to play this song. He was shocked when he heard me play it. My Dad had passed away in the early 80's so this is a nice memory for me. You all wrote a great song and not everyone could play it like you all did.
Cannibal: As did MANY of us. I was lucky enough in 7th grade to be in a band that had a drummer that could play this song. It was a fun song to play, and if we didn't play it 4-5 times at house parties, it was a dull party.
I’m the drummer for our Praise & Worship band at church, and many moons ago, me and the guitar player were goofing around with this song at practice one day and decided to bang it out unannounced on a Sunday morning. I was worried about ruffling certain parishioner’s feathers; however, everyone - from 8 to 80 - loved it! Love you & your channel and thanks for posting this wonderful clip. - Clay -

I love how Bob Berryhill nails that guitar bridge at 2:20 into the next drum part before they re-enter the main melody. That bridge/interlude was always my favorite part of the song and Bob does it justice. Nice going, guys.
An all time classic for sure and its great that Bob and his family are still performing. I love your interviews but its cool to see performances too. I bet you have a bunch. Thanks Joe 👍🏻😎
Our 5 pc band used to play this at dances in 68/ 69. The teens loved it . The band was called DEDICADED CHOICE. It was in Chelmsford Ontario Canada . Good memories.
Hi Von.... yes and not just drummers.... it sounds so difficult but it’s actually so much easier to play that many kids played it on their desk and some went on to performing drums for years in local garage bands and even as professional musicians. Thanks again for watching... Joe
Joe still has it, no other instrumental in history can top this timeless song. I remember as a young teenager surfing and listening to this song in the 80s, I was a beach kid. Thank you Joe for this timeless song that has touched the hearts of decades of listeners and thank you for the memories, they say the mark of a good drummer is if he can play wipeout😂
