My fond memory of Veena ji, is some 25 years ago, when I was walking on IIT-B main road when Veena ji saw me and smiled at me. It was her classical singing that I had been hearing all through my engineering and masters that helped me in my studies. And for years later, I am still fascinated that she smiled at me. What a personality !!!
Want to consolidate this side of Veena ji's persona. This was a very long time ago, our family are huge music lovers, classical Hindustani in particular. I had already listened to Veena ji at concerts and on TV, and we had her audio tapes. I was late for my train to Bombay, from Pune. I was unfamiliar with the station, and frantic. Someone spoke to me, and pointed me to the right platform, the right direction to take. I expressed my relief and gratitude and rushed off to find my train. It was only when the panic receded, that I realised that the lady had indeed been Veena ji, by her side, had been men with tanpura and other wrapped up accompanying instruments, tabla and such. I could not help marvelling at her ability to be ordinary despite being anything but!! 🙏 Huge loss, but warm beautiful memory, and such an archive of brilliant music
Mind blowing darbari. lady singers rarely sing raag darbari kannada, because it is a raag that is more suited for the male voice and it is a very tough raag to master. veena tai has mastered darbari as well as the male artists. 🙏.
Lady singers generally avoid this monumental raag but Veena ji has done a great job. Even Tansen will appreciate this. One of my favorite rendering. She also happens to be my all time favorite lady singer.

So true I hv persuaded two lady singers to sing Darbari bin recent times both are available on you tube- Moumita Mitra and Pallavi pote both are very good

Veena-ji passed away and so did my mother. Strange thing is, I see Veena-ji and I see my mother. But I see my mother's photo and I remember Veena-ji.
