Thanks for this video tour of dtla fabric stores. I’ve been wanting to go but not sure with restrictions due to pandemic.. You should check out Fabric Merchants, 1420 S Grand Vista Ave. East LA west of Lorena St and south of Olympic.

Hi! I am planning on going to the district this week where do you recommend to go for affordable spandex/lycra fabric for things like swimwear?

My first stop for Lycra is always Blue Moon, everything is organized with a wide array of colors/textures/prints. There are other small shops in the 9th and Maple area that have Lycra, there’s an ok selection across the street in the Michael Levine’s building. If you need Lycra in bulk/wholesale (20yd minimum), I’d go check out Ragfinders on 8th and San Pedro

Where would you recommend for quality bridal fabrics?

It depends on what your budget is.
If you’re looking for higher end materials, I’d go to Mood Fabrics (online at www.moodfabrics.com, swatches are $1.50 per 5”x7” piece) the LA store is at the corner of Pico and Burlington downtown. They have a comprehensive selection of end of line designer fabrics, silks, laces, trims, and so on that will dazzle any bride. They are pricey, many of their laces are imported and start at $50 per yard.
In the 9th & Maple area, I’ve had good luck over at Journal Fabrics on 9th & Cecilia St with bridal satins and laces. They’re more the middle of the price range, and they’re often willing to negotiate the price if you’re willing to buy a larger quantity. A new spot with some pretty things is Golden Dolphin on Maple, which occupies the old Michael Levine’s Home Decor store. They have an array of bridal laces and base fabrics, as well as a nicely presented trim selection.
