    Nice to see they've finally found some heavyweight prospects again. The last couple of crops has basically all been Jr heavies. Which, don't get me wrong, Jr heavies are awesome. But they aren't the main event, and they wont carry the company. Especially in New Japan.
    Not to mention that the heavy division is starting to get really stale, and the ones in their upper 30's or older (which is the majority of them) are getting more and more physically worn down. They severely need an influx of new heavy talent, and new match-ups. And while these guys are years away from being in that mix, at least there's finally hope for the future :).

    • @grantrez
      @grantrez 8 років тому +1

      Jr Heavyweights aren't in the main-event, but they should be. I mean look at Kota Ibushi, this guy deserves a huge push. Same with Kenny Omega, he's definitely an IWGP Heavyweight Championship Material.

    • @CrossfacePanda
      @CrossfacePanda 8 років тому +1

      Shell Magnet Kenny Omega isn't naturally a Jr heavyweight. He's taller than half of the heavyweight roster, and could easily go over the 100kg weight limit into heavyweight (and it seems like he will do so going forward).
      Kota Ibushi is a similar case. He's tall enough to be a heavyweight, he just has to bulk up, which he has been doing ever since he announced he wanted to wrestle in the heavy division. He probably just don't want to add too much fat, as his physique is a selling point to a lot of his fans, as is his flips. Which is why the weight gain is taking so long (and there's also an upper limit to how much muscle his body can carry). But if he wants to compete in the main event, he's going to have to. Or they can just lie about his weight. Either way, i don't care. He just can't be built as a junior.
      Fact is that Japanese fans doesn't buy Jr's as main eventers matched up against heavyweights. They can be the main event against each other on the off show, sure. But they can't be the main event AGAINS'T the heavies. There's a reason they have weight classes, as it keeps things feeling realistic.
      Yes, Ibushi has had main event matches against heavies before, but you'll also notice he haven't been allowed to win. Apart from the G1, where anybody are allowed to win.
      So yeah, i'd love for both of these guys to go heavyweight, as they are tall enough to pull it off. And the company sorely needs it. But you won't see somebody like KUSHIDA do it. And i love KUSHIDA, but he's a Jr, and shouldn't compete with the heavies. Doesn't make him worse, just in a different division.

    • @tomlafferty4651
      @tomlafferty4651 8 років тому

      +CrossfacePanda That's very true although if necessary some junior weights could be converted to heavyweights like Devitt, Omega and Ibushi have done and along with that maybe add in some new American talent it should help freshen up the division in a few years. Of course with Nakamura leaving this gives guys who haven't won the big one yet like Goto and Shibata a huge chance to liven the scene, and with Okada still very young he'll be there to carry the company

    • @CrossfacePanda
      @CrossfacePanda 8 років тому

      Tom Lafferty Well, when it came to Devitt he never really moved up to the heavyweight division. He was the Jr champ for most his time as the Bullet Club leader. And if you look closely, you can see that once he started having more matches with the heavyweights, he was wearing lifts in his shoes to look taller (not that that's a bad thing, whatever you have to do to make it believable). Before that, he was about half a head shorter than Tanahashi, while in his feud with him later, he suddenly became the same height. And when he challenged Okada for the title, the whole story was Okada going "You wanna challenge a heavyweight, little Jr boy? Okay, i'll show you the true difference in power between a heavy and a Jr". And the only way they could make it believable for Devitt to maybe eek out a win, was by having the Bullet Club cheat for him during the whole match. And even then, he got beaten handily in the end.
      The point is, they view heavy's and Jr's as different divisions on different levels. And just like in real combat sports, you don't generally do matches between different weight classes. And when it rarely happens, the heavy always wins. And i much prefer that type of realism to WWE's way of doing it. That's not to say you can't have the odd match where a Jr out maneuvers a heavy and wins, but they should never win the heavyweight title.
      I would be fine with them making the IC title an openweight title though. Just merge it with the NEVER title, since that one is openweight, and you have a new openweight division. IMO, the heavy's should still win in that division 80% of the time to keep it credible, but it could still make for some fun matchups, and a way to utilize Jr's in a semi-main spot, or even main event spot if they are super popular like Ibushi is. The only problem is that it might bastardize the Jr heavyweight title. But if booked right, i believe it could work.
      On the subject of bringing in more foreigners. No, i don't think so. It's called New JAPAN Pro Wrestling, and their main market is still Japan. And as such, they should look to have a majority of their stars being Japanese first and foremost. It's simply makes the most business sense from a marketability standpoint. And they already have a ton of foreigners in the company as it is. Sure there's a lot of great foreign talent, but there's an equal amount of great Japanese talent as well. I DO however wish they'd swallow their pride a bit and try to hire some Japanese talent from other promotions. Daisuke Sekimoto is one that people have wanted for years (though maybe he doesn't want to go there, i dunno). Or try to convince some other young, promising heavyweight freelancers to come in. I know they pride themselves in their dojo - as they should - but the system is too slow to lean on entirely. You could also bring over some people from NOAH, but then you run the risk of watering down that promotion, which they wouldn't want since they technically own it now.
      And lastly, the problem right now in New Japan is that everybody has had matches with everybody. There's no fresh matches left. And that's okay for a while, but it's starting to look really stale now. Even with guys like Goto and Shibata. Goto has been around for quite a bit as well, and while Shibata was away for many years, the company seems reluctant to get behind him. And i love all of the middle aged and older guard as well, and some of them could very well have another run as THE main event (Makabe for example as he's older, but not "old"), but it's all just the same over and over. Which is why the company is on a slight downturn yet again, after seeing a slight boost in the last 5 years.
      Okada is great, but he can't keep the company afloat by himself.
      Well, my post is ginormous as it is (sorry), so i'll stop ranting now :P

    Let me ask you guys, which would you prefer? Life of the independent wrestler who picks up skills performing for maybe 50 bucks a night on the road with small-time promoters, crooked agents and all the associated baggage (drugs, ring-rats, unstable work) or something like this NJPW Dojo or the WWE Performance Centre where things seem regimented, highly structured and maybe a little too formal for the business of professional wrestling.
