      @dude_indeed_on_the_internet 😁🐢✌️😎
      Hi, my name is Cheryl, with a "C", 🤣 I hope it's OK with you, I'd like to kindly share some info on your comment about not needing a heat lamp for African Spurred Sulcata Tortoises... I also have one. 😁💙🐢👍
      His name is 4X, pronounced (4-By), Lol, short for 4X4, which describes him perfectly!!!
      Whomever said Tortoises are slow, lied!!! 💯😂 It made for a good story, Old wives tales, cartoons and story books. 🤣 He is very curious and affectionate. If someone is in the backyard, he knows, and he is at your feet with a Quickness!!! He LOCKS, LOADS, and Peels out!!! 😂 😂😂
      Locks= Eye's on destination, and he squares himself up...
      Loads= All of a sudden, he lifts himself UP, on all four legs...
      Peels Out=He's gone!!! 🤣🤣🤣 If you blinked you missed him!!! Lol
      OK, back on subject;... I received 4X on Mother's Day, 17 years ago. He fit in the palm of my hand, didn't even weigh a pound yet!!!
      I also received a nice, big Glass Terrarium with 2 lights, 1 heat, and one for the uv light they must have for their shells to grow strong and healthy until they are big enough to soak up real Sunshine outside all day. Where you live, and are raising your Tort, determines if you need heat lamps. I HAVE to bring 4X in the house for the winter. These guys do NOT Hibernate!!! And if it's going to drop below 50°, he is inside!!! He's got a hand me down, doggie bed, I put a heating pad on the bed after I wrap the pad with a nice towel, then it goes into a clean pillowcase and 4X chills on that, and I have the UV/HEAT bulb hanging above him. I live in an old beat up, no heater, no insulation mobile home, with old aluminum wiring, so I can not use any electric heat sources!!! It not only blows a Breaker, my ELECTRIC BILL went from like $60.00 to $400.00 in 1 month!!!😭💔 I am 100%DISABLED, since November 2019. I receive SSDI, SSI early, for a monthly total of
      $1,180. I own my mobilehome, but the space rent is up to $636.00 monthly now!!! That is NOT including, ELECTRIC, WATER, TRASH, and PASS THRU, is 39.99 monthly!?! Can anyone tell me what PASS THRU IS, MEANS, STANDS FOR??? I've been here since December 2008. My space rent was $294.00 monthly then!!! So, now my rent total is right about 800.00 monthly, and I only receive 1,180ish to LIVE in California in 2024???!!!
      I can not have natural gas. I guess it won't pass inspection!!! The previous Managers failed to disclose that to me. So I have a 5 gallon propane bottle for my stove, and I need one for my water heater but haven't been able to afford one this year yet!!!😭💔
      I was in a hit and run accident in the beginning of February, my Camry was totalled, I almost died!!! I had just renewed my Driver's Licence. Got my car smoged, and registered... no insurance, it lapsed, NO New Car for me!!! I have to walk everywhere now out here in this Mojave Desert God Forsaken Quicksand Pit!!! Ill be 59 in August, 100% disabled. Our 1 grocery store is about 1 mile each way!!! Albertsons. 😭💔 Sorry bout all that!!! 😂 And Thank You!!! I hope it's OK, I just wanted to share my knowledge with you. Have a blessed Day

    I have one he's about 5 years old and about the size of a full grown desert tortoise. He's strong as hell as well. He's also highly intelligent for what he is. Makes a good pet but you've got to have the right environment. If you live somewhere cold don't bother unless you're rich and can afford to keep him in a warm garage with uv bulbs and heat lamps all around along with maintaining his diet. They do not brumate (almost like hibernation but not exactly) in the winter like most other tortoises. Warm places are perfect for them. They can dig and they will make a long tunnel be prepared for that. Outside of that they're cool as hell and definitely will outlive you.

    My husband was so excited to surprise me one day that he bought me one not knowing how big they actually get. Thankfully, I am an animal lover, and I will always protect my Torti. It still is a huge responsibility to own an animal that can possibly outlive you. I’ve had to literally put my tortoise on my will. I was very upset when I realized my husband didn’t do the correct research on this animal, but it is very rewarding to see them grow and grow closer to you on a daily basis. they are the cutest.😊

    My sulcata tortoise will always live inside of my home. He will NEVER be in a cage. I treat him like a cat. He can roam freely. I don't have any carpet in my house so it's fine. He has his own space with heating lamps but he isn't caged. He even takes naps in my bed with me after he takes his warm bath. They prefer to pee and poop in their warm bath in the sink. Easy clean.

      You're supposed to keep them outdoors tho. if you want an indoors pet there are so many other options and even smaller tortoises you could keep in a small area in the garden.

    • @Vbuck_samuel
      @Vbuck_samuel Місяць тому +1

      @@tom3294146you can keep them indoors. The only reason people keep them outside is you don’t have to pay for lighting and there is more space. If you have the space indoors and the correct lights then you can keep them indoors. I don’t keep sulcatas but I do keep a horsefield and he spends most his time inside, with a pen that we put him in outside whenever we are outside. It is not warm enough where I live to keep him outside for the entire year.

      I had a Texas Gopher tortoise for about 20 years. We let it freely roam the house during winter, and stay in the garden in summer. They are excellent escape artists, so the outside enclosure had to be secure. She escaped many times and was found hundreds of feet away, once in the street, and again near an irrigation ditch. They are easy to keep as long as they get food, water, and shelter.

    I have five sulcatta tortoises… my oldest one is 9 years old and 75 lbs!! My babies are the best thing that ever happened to me. They all have their own individual personalities!!! Yes, they are the 3rd largest tortoise in the world. They all grow at different rates. I have a 4 year old that still looks like a hatchling….snd a 3 year old that is triple the 4 year olds size…. My two 6 year olds are
    Both the same size which is about 20 lbs each … and comparable to the size of a cantaloupe …. Make sure you have plenty of land for your guys to roam !! They are travelers and absolutely Love to graze on grass, hay and weeds… and dark leafy greens as a snack!!🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢💚💚💚💚💚

    • @elsserpents3593
      @elsserpents3593  Рік тому +55

      100% right, and it definitely can be an indirect form of abuse! Unintentional abuse, is still abuse, even if someone means well. I do think it also lies with the seller to some extent as well when you're selling animals that are such a large commitment. If they cared about the animals they were selling, I'd hope they would ensure the buyer is educated enough to purchase an animal from them. It's a buyer AND seller issue in a lot of ways, in my opinion.

      Yup. Had two that got out of a 3 foot tall fence and started roaming the neighborhood. Started getting calls and was finally able to round them up. I reinforced the fence and they got out again. I finally had to donate them to a tortoise shelter and they found a good home for them. Russian, Redfoots, or Cherry Heads are better choices because they don’t get nearly so big. I have two 18 month old Redfoots and they are about 4.5” long and will get to about 12 to 15” when fully grown.

Mine now weighs just over 5 stone ( no idea what that is in metric) I couldn’t part with him, & have to room & facilities, but it is concerning how big he will grow.

And I really love it, because it protects it from bad owners ❤ And it also protects the others, because it's endangered species

    That's why any respectable pet owner never buys from pet stores! As a tortoise and turtle rescue mom, like any animal, you must research current n future pet needs. All reptiles including these shell babies, need exotic vet care, which can be rare n expensive, depending on your location. They have very specific lighting, enclosure, dietary needs! And they are going to outlive you most likely.

    I got a tortoise for my 7th birthday. I wanted to give it away, but I felt bad so I kept it. Within 2 years, it was huge! My mom so how mush I loved it, and bought another one. Sadly, it stayed small to this day

    They also tend to do this with fish, especially freshwater fish. I want bought to Amazon red tailed catfish they never tell you how fast they grow and when you first get one they’re about 3 inches long. They don’t tell you that they grow really fast and that they get to be over 200 pounds. Certain things should not be sold to the public without them being aware of what they’re getting into.

    The first two picts and the video showed a baby leopard tortoise. Leopard tortoises usually grow up 16-18 inches long, sulcatas are way lot BIGGER.

    Pet stores absolutely need to warn people about tortoises life span and size, I would argue to make it mandatory to do so.
    I just don't want to think about them being thrown out when they get way too big for most people :

    People if you want to get something that’s close to a tortoise and doesn’t get that big then I would suggest getting a box turtle but please do your research before you get one so that you know their needs and their habits and to be able to feed them and keep them healthy. With all reptiles, you were going to need a certain kind of light so that they can produce vitamin D like they get from the sun.

    I found one a few years ago on the road when I was working for Amazon. I've had her for a little more than 2+years. And she has only doubled in size. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but my baby isn't growing as fast as some of y'all babies

      My baby is a runt and the one you found might have been one too, usually the smaller ones have growth studs (as long as you’re not overfeeding than y shouldn’t be a problem)

    I don’t understand I feed my tortoise every day. I bring it outside every day. I make sure it gets enough sunlight I give it these nutrients pill thingies, but it hasn’t grown that much and I’m 13 and it’s only the size of my hand I’ve been having it for five years now, I don’t know what’s going on and every time I go to the person I bought it from. They just say it’s because of the deformity the turtle was born with.
