He does have some knowledge of music theory. Knowing notes, scales and chords is still having knowledge of music theory. Learning even a little bit of it goes a long way. Don't neglect it.
Hey I noticed when you do automation that you always copy&paste the volume of a point.
If you want to make a point between two points you can press Shift+Right Click to make it the exact same volume and basically just need to worry about placing it on the right spot.
That saved me so much time personally.
