- LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 was the golden age of the LEGO MINDSTORMS brand. EV3 will be remembered the most fondly by the most people 20 years from now. I offer 10 reasons why the EV3 era was the golden era of LEGO MINDSTORMS, ranging from the EV3 technical features, its popularity in FLL, representation in the World Maker Faire, and more.
This video was made in collaboration with the UA-cam channel Unbrickme, who made his own counterpart video discussing why the NXT was the golden age of LEGO MINDSTORMS. You can watch his 10 Reasons Why video on the NXT here: • 10 Reasons Why NXT is ...

4:01 The best part! Made me laugh!
Hahaha thanks so much! I figured if I was on the topic of hackers, I better have some fun with it!
@Jackson Disher hey thanks! :)
Best meme by far 4:01 I agree with you Unbrickme
I remember seeing all the old NXT videos on UA-cam back in 2013 and I really really wanted Mindstorms, and I ended up getting the EV3 set from my parents. Over the years I bought more and more parts including an NXT and Mindstorms made up a very large chunk of my childhood. I think the EV3 is better than the NXT because there were more sensors and motors available, but Mindstorms as a whole will have a very special place in my heart.
(Also grew up watching your videos, haha)
I think BOTH NXT and EV3 ARE the Golden Age of Lego Mindstorms, because of how versatile they really are!
2023 and this is still the more compelling argument of the two. I'm enjoying the little ev3 kit I recently purchased. Subscribed
Learned a lot from your tutorial, so happy you are back
Thanks! I am glad to be back too, because of awesome fans (like you) who support me!
I wish everybody handles arquaments like you guys
The golden age of my life matches the Ev3 in a lot of ways. 2014- 2019 was my golden age of lego collecting. I was getting tons of mixles and I was trying out of themes when mixles retired in early 2017, then in when lego boost came out I then started researching the Ev3 and that’s when the Ev3 grew on me, 2018 was also the year I started collecting technic sets.
Very interesting to see how you have grown with the LEGO lineup! Thanks for sharing!
What a coincidence! This video about EV3 being the golden age was apparently uploaded at almost the exact same time as this one, which considers the NXT to be the golden age: ua-cam.com/video/LGb8OTM9rg4/v-deo.html
Great minds think alike... some kind of cosmic energy must have converged on this Thursday to make this extraordinary event happen ;)

Builderdude, your book is great. It, along with the associated files on the accompanying website, have helped me out immensely on my projects.
Thanks so much! If you enjoyed it so much, would you consider writing a review for it on Amazon? Thanks!
I have a theory that the next Mindstorms robot will be more like ev3.
If you look at Lego’s website, it recommends spike prime for grades 6-8, and the ev3 for grades 9-12
I don’t see how the robot inventor is more “complex” than spike
So there is a missing age demographic, that leaves a demand for a more complex robot
This is just my theory, however a new Mindstorms robot will surely come out over time, and I think there’s a huge chance it will be a lot like the ev3 (but more up-to-date)
Having watched both videos... I used both platforms, but I think I agree with you more, for a lot of the reasons you state. The thing about EV3 is, at least for me, it was everything the NXT was, and more. That's kind of why I'm very leery about reaching for 51515; it doesn't feel like an upgrade, at least on paper. Don't have any practical experience with it yet... but looking at it and comparing it to what I know, I feel like I'm losing something important if I try to go for it. I didn't feel that when making the transition from NXT to EV3. 51515 is about as alien to me as the _Boost_ platform is, only the latter isn't actually trying to be a Mindstorms-tier kit. Well, mainstream Mindstorms-tier; the early years had such things as the Scout and Micro Scout kits (Robotics Discovery Set and Droid/Dark Side Developer Kit, respectively) which I would actually consider the _Boost_ platform a step up from, but your mileage may vary.
As an aside, I kind of wonder if this is how some people felt when making the transition from the Robotics Invention System series to the NXT platform. lol
Frankly, the deciding factor for 51515 in my willingness to buy is the potential for networking multiple P-bricks with each other for bigger, more complex robots, like I have in mind for my EV3 in building a LEGO Dragoon from _StarCraft._ If LEGO implements that functionality for 51515, or if a third party does it, I will buy it ASAP. Until then, EV3 and NXT both do such projects better. I didn't usually work with multiple P-bricks, but I really liked having that potential, and every generation has had it in some form until now. For the Robotics Invention System, infrared link. NXT and EV3 had Bluetooth and USB. I want to see that with 51515 too, in some capacity.
Thank you for your very thoughtful and nuanced take! I am hoping to see daisy chaining come to Robot Inventor as well. More mature builders will appreciate it for the big projects you mentioned.
man, I remember watching you in 2018 when I got obsessed with Mindstorms, fond memories. I honestly need to come back to the hobby, because it was a little complicated for my 10 year old self lol
The EV3 was, hands down, the absolute best small robotics controller for hobbyist at the time it was released and for most (all) of its life. As a teacher and long time robotics club sponsor and teacher anytime a parent asked what to buy their kid I never hesitated to recommend the EV3 kit. It was powerful for its time (even now its still pretty powerful), easy to use, expandable, an amazing piece of tech.
The "hub" in the 51515 kit was a both a step forward and a step backwards, but mostly a step backwards. As someone who has used and taught with Lego Mindstorms since the beginning I am saddened by the cancellation of the consumer product line. Lego absolutely dropped the ball on the new kit, with the electronics, the packaging and presentation Its like the death of an era, no Lego consumer robotics product on the market just makes the market seem.....empty. I di understand there is a LOT more competition on the market, it used to be that Lego was the only product on the market but now there are lots, but Lego was the best but its price point didn't do it any favors.
The educational line Spike Prime kit was also a step backwards in marketing and packaging. It is absolutely aimed at elementary students, middle school and high school students are turned off by the packaging and presentation of the product.
Hi Kyle, great vid.
You have raised most of the salient points just think it a shame that Lego could not see a way of offering an updated model as the ev3 developed upon tithe nxt.
I now have sets of all the new generation and can see that Lego wants to position products within specifically targeted learning age zones, spike etc, we do and this is reflected in the new fll mats and challenges.
I shall keep sideloading my modules and develop on ec3 dev.
Indeed, a lot of LEGO's current product strategy is about siloing its products towards certain age groups, plus managing the tango dance between LEGO Retail and LEGO Edu without having their two similar products step on each other's toes. Do you have any exciting EV3 dev projects lined up soon?
The NXT has its own mini-brick (and the EV3 robot just looked silly compared to both versions of Alpha Rex) We have a winner!
ev3 was a big step in the right direction for the hobby.
wish they would just refresh it with lipo battery ,faster processor and keep the hackability.
even lego themselves recomend ev3 for more advanced users over the spike prime.
i know u already said this but first lego league because first lego league is just classic
Does the EV3 brick accept an SD card larger than 32GB?
After viewing both videos, I conclude that the EV3 is the "Golden Age of LEGO Mindstorms." Your reasons are much more compelling than Unbrickme's. I've used both the NXT and the EV3. Your EV3 "Reason #4" alone (the surge in FLL Teams in the 2010s) make the EV3 more remembered by more people than the NXT. Many of Unbrickme's reasons for the NXT involve 3rd-party sensors that the EV3 already include. I liken the NXT-vs.-EV3 comparison to automobiles -- what was the "Golden Age" of the Ford Motor Company's most iconic car? Was it the Ford Model T (i.e., the NXT) or the Ford Mustang of 1964.5 (the EV3)? Most people drool over the Mustang, but not the Model T. Finally, the current value of the 31313 EV3 set is $392 (per BrickEconomy), but only $349 for the 8547 NXT 2.0 set. "The market" gives the nod to the EV3.
I love the Ford analogy (mostly because I am a Ford fanatic myself). Interesting how the Brick Economy prices show the EV3 is more valuable, but I wonder if the NXT is more inflated considering its original retail price was only $280? You have great insights to share, as always!
Builderdude35 I think NXT is cheaper simple because it’s older. I remember NXT being extremely expensive, like $400 - $700 sealed back in 2014-2016
@@Unbrickme Sometimes things are more expensive because they ARE older haha. We just have to see if the NXT ends up aging like fine wine!
I just found out you can program these in Java as well as Python
Yes! EV3dev is pretty amazing and opens up tons of programming possibilities!
Is there any project in particular you would want to use Java and EV3 for?
I've just started a new job that involves Java. So I thought I'd play around with ev3 and Java. I wonder whether I can do this with inventor too!
@@75STARFISH it's possible that someone will find a way to hack Inventor to use Java programming! We just need to see where the community takes it this year!
@@75STARFISH Me and my team experimented with it, but it was unusable for competitions, due to jlag
Hi!
I would want to buy a MindStorms for my son (8 age), but I dont know which to buy. In Brazil, the Lego 9797 now is cheap, but the 45544 isn't.
He is using in school the 45544, but for use at home I thouth the 9797 would be one possible, but I dont have certally.
Can help me, please?
AMEN
HES BACK BABY (also first)
Oh yes 😎 happy to be back
I have ev3
I think Robot Inventor is the best, however it is far from the "Golden" age . I agree with you that EV3 was the "Golden" age.
5min 23 sec ... hahaha welcome in the club!
It was just yesterday that I remember TVs weren't flat XD
I think ev3
i think its nxt AND ev3
Interesting take! I would love to hear more on your thoughts why!
In 20years from now? Lol...
Nostalgia is a crazy thing ;)
