Dan also become far more endearing when his relationship with other characters developed. He developed a strong bond with Sakura and Blanka, the latter especially is touching because he's one of the few people to call him by his original name Jimmy. Sure, he's a parody character but he's also all in good fun and a nice guy at the end of the day.

And then, when he was added to SFV, they ended up nerfing him because when it was discovered he had an infinite combo. Like, wow. From joke to the devs realizing they inadvertently made him break the game, it's the perfect way to to show how far he's come.
i love how they nerfed his infinite by buffing his fireball, which has a random chance to be a stronger fireball and knockdown the opponent, ruining the combo which requires a regular fireball. they made him worse by making him better
And even without the infinite, he was considered oen of the best characters upon his release

I think it is one of the best nerfs in fighting games ever, it makes perfect sense, it still gives the silly goofy character an infinite, and it's just a cool tool outside of the infinite

Say what you will about Dan, but it’s undeniable that the man puts his heart into everything he does
Personally I really loved what UDON done with him in one of vignette little stories. The whole comics is essentially Dan's pitch on why you should try Saikyo style, and in it Dan's showed to be very compassionate, he helps elderly, albeit sometimes suffers for it. I especially love his final words. "You can never truly be defeated because you already found the path to the strongest living! Defeat is nothing but a winter wind that blows bitter frost in the face of the beast, and with every loss you must laugh louder untill the wind fills the sky with your laughter! You will learn to defeat defeat! This is the way of Hibiki's Ultra Dojo!" It shows a character growth for him, like yeah he's arrogant but he's a fool with a heart of gold.

My favourite thing about Dan is that outside of the world of street fighter, he’d be able to kick the ass of any real-life person on earth. It’s just that in a world of psycho powered gods and green monsters he’s way out of his league.

Damn never realized Kage had basically the same animations that's such a nice touch.
Both characters are going to be in the same game and it’s when Kage isn’t Evil Ryu.
The best part is that Capcom could one day continue Dan's parody nature by giving him an alternate form, ala Evil Ryu or Violent Ken. Personally, I'd go with "Serious Dan", to parody "Serious Mr. Karate" from SVC Chaos & KOF XIII. Have him don the tengu mask, make it simply godlike & powerful... But give him half the health of Akuma, who tends to have the lowest health to balance out his power; literally, make it so that a single combo of decent length, especially if a super ends it, can defeat "Serious Dan". In storyline, it could even be explained that, in the end, Dan becomes terrified of just how skilled & even deadly he can be, if he takes himself absolutely seriously, so he locks "Serious Dan" away forever, truly content with the man that he normally is.
Call him Mr. Saikyo. His taunts steal your meter, and his own moves become effective when his meter fills up.
This is actually a godlike idea and I love it with absolutely no biases based around loving most joke characters in games. But seriously, Serious Dan would actually be badass. I would buy SFV for Serious Dan. I would actually *play* SFV for Serious Dan.

Let's take an instant to remember that Bison DID offer Dan to join him, meaning that he have seen potential in him. The whole thing was there right from the start... xD
Also notable is that Dan appears as a joke character in the Puyo-Puyo like spin off Super Puzzle Fighter. His garbage pattern is all one color, red. While clearing a large amount of one color can easily reverse Dan's attacks against him, if his opponent lacks the crucial piece to break all of that red it would probably make for a severely devastating and hilarious loss.

Kage is the personification of Ansatsuken , and perhaps Dan would be that lethal if Gouken trained him properly .
The creator of Street fighter 1 left Capcom to work at SNK which is why Ryo of Art of Fighting is similar to Ryu of Street Fighter.
So the creator of SF's Ryu and the creator of AoF's Ryo are the same person.
Yes, the Japanese Takashi Nishiyama, he worked at Capcom creating SF1, then at SNK creating Fatal Fury, AOF and KOF, then at Dimps (company created when SNK died) creating SF4 and many good games..😏
Takashi Nishiyama decided to go to SNK because they were working on a technology with more power where he could work on all his fabulous ideas and also he had more freedom to work in his own way, CAPCOM continued with the project started by Takashi Nishiyama and created SF2, unfortunately SNK suffered a delay in finishing their technology and Capcom launched SF2 before Fatal Fury, this is why Capcom had a greater impact in the West. This is how the whole battle between Capcom and SNK was born, where clearly SNK always led with innovation, since the genius behind this idea was working at SNK.

Glad somebody said this. Ryo isn’t actually a rip off. He’s what Ryu should have become if his original creator stayed with Capcom.
Yuri is SNK’s answer to Dan. Capcom said their mid boss can beat their main character. SNK answered by having Yuri, a beginner in Kyokugen Karate, able to perform Capcom’s deadliest techniques. Her moves constantly change.
Over time, she’s copied Sakura’s Shunpuukyaku and shououken, Ryu’s shin Shoryuken, Akuma’s Shungokusatsu, Terry’s burn knuckle for some reason, and some others I’m probably forgetting 😂.
In Capcom vs SNK, she and Dan have a special intro where they taunt at each other the same way.
@@YophiSmith Don't forget that SNK quite happily leaned into the parody by giving Dan his first iteration of Haoh Gadoken and a version of Ryo's Tenchi Haohken (that one-hit super with autoguard, except Dan's has slightly worse recovery thanks to breaking his hand and fixing it mid-match) as *regular special moves* in SvC Chaos.
Dan it's the only one who learned how to throw fireballs like Gouken with only one hand so you could argue he had a lot of potential. So for me Dan's fight style is as strong as Gouken but is weak due to his training. I still love him, he will always have a spot on my personal roster for fun's sake and braging rights.
How he is now in terms of gameplay he powered up since SF4

In lore, he will always be weak. Honestly, him charging it is a good progression. The only characters who share that gimmick are Oni and Goken.
So imo how he is now is perfectly fine. Especially still keeping it tied to his overall Joke status.
Gouken is a trash teacher and person he basically sent Dan to his doom knowing full well he'd go after Sagat. He also has the Satsui No Hado which would've got worst if Sagat hadn't actually faked his loss and stomped Dan the Satsui No Hado would've activated and poof Akuma Jr.
Imagine Dan getting a full year of kyokugen-ryu training ...
Dan is actually quite a strong fighter. Compared to most people, he is a demigod. It just so happens that most, if not all of the people he happens to fight against are actual gods, and in the case of Ansatsuken users, titans. Hell, even Dan himself is in disbelief when he beats Oni in arcade mode, as seen in his win quote.
I'm a big SF fan but I honestly didn't know much about Dan's creation outside of him being a joke character. Really good video!

Here's an observation this vid missed, the joke behind Dan's gadoken: Art of Fighting matches feature super bars that start of full in the match and decrease when you use specials and supers. When your bar is fully depleted, you can still use specials but they become shite versions of themselves. In the case of the fireball, a metered version does decent damage and goes full screen, a meter less version does no damage and appears as a spec of energy on Ryo's hand
So it turns into a fireball that hurts like a slap when you have no meter?
@@lucaswibisono1316 Yeah. You also can power up to fill your spirit gauge, and taunt your opponent to deplete theirs.
SNK turned Dan's joke into an entire gameplay trend by making everyone's projectiles fizzle just like Dan's from KOF 96 onwards, not until years later that everyone got their projectiles back by default without accessing alternate versions of them
Also , Dan's gadouken is pretty similar to kyokugen-ryu's ho'ohken .

I'd love for them to evolve Dan as a character. This is a crazy idea but I want Dan to unlock the dark Hadou. Like maybe Dan unlocks the power of the Dark Hadou and now has a shitton of power behind him, but has no idea how the hell to use it. I just think it would be a really funny idea for Dan to all of a sudden be a threat, like this dude who's been a Joke all his life finally becomes a threat. I think more plausible idea is that Ryu falls to its influence and soundly trounces everybody else who see him as unstoppable, frightening monster and that gets defeated by Dan who saw just another fighter and that is nothing he isn't unfamiliar with.

Dan has been a personal favorite character for years, mostly because a joke at one's own expense is funny to everyone. the only person who gets hurt by it is the person telling the joke.
The old joke is that, if someone pulls out DAN in a tournament, it's a big power move, because it's them saying "I can kick your ass, with the WORST character".
Dan is a beast now with hype combos in SFV.

If dan was given some pointers from ryu and some other other people in the street fighter universe he could probably be one of the most dangerous fighters
He did train under Gouken (trained Ryu and Ken and with Akuma) for a while. He was too angry to qualify for longer training. Scarier idea is that Akuma would approach Dan to teach him.
So worth the wait, I loved Dan from Street Fighter IV and myself and friends would quote him constantly (and still do) but I never knew his origins or that he delved into the darker side of SF lore. Absolutely hilarious. I want to see his Dad as a fighter one day.
Also Agumon or whoever that little dinosaur was seems completely OP and I love him.

I know this is a long video and all, but the reason Sagat threw the fight against Dan was because of Ryu. Sagat wanted revenge after losing, but he threw the fight to teach him the very lesson he would teach Dan. Sagat had some character development after realizing that the scar Ryu gave him was a result of the Satsui no Hadou's influence (a slight retcon from the original lore).
Yes , also said hatred costed him his "king of muay thai" title when he lost a fight against Adon . Once he get rid of his need for revenge , he defeated Adon without breaking a sweat .

I think it's also worth pointing out that in Sakura Ganbaru and other Street Fighter comics, it's established that Dan is a strong enough martial artist to handle standard mooks and basic practitioners. It's only when he's up against standard SF characters that are obscenely tough that he ends up the woeful figure we've come to know and love
I easily relate to Dan, he first appeared in a game that was released the year I was born &, coincidentally, his fictional birth date is November 25. If you minus the 2 & 5 respectively by 1, you get November 14, the day I was born.

Only being Semi-Familiar with Street Fighter, I feel like Kage as described here would be an example of "accidental" world building. I don't really see Capcpom deliberately setting out to make their swell new character emulate a non-sucky Dan Hibiki, even in the era of "characters are functions". I don't think that invalidates the point, though. After all, some of my favorite bits of trivia to dwell on in games and stuff are the things the creators didn't necessarily mean but actualized by saying anyway.
Do you think it's too late for Dan to shine again? It's been a couple games since we've seen him, and I can't imagine there's much business sense in selling Dan as DLC...
I think the character is beloved enough that you could sell him as a bonus in a fighters pass quite easily. I feel like buying Dan individually is not enticing, but buying Dan in addition to several others, just for the sake of having Dan there and THEN the competitive characters, is very attractive. And Hell, there's so much Dan can do to parody modern fighting games, from carrying over mechanics from previous games to be "behind the times" (or even previous versions of SF) to having bad versions of other mechanics from other games (Dragon Rush, for instance, would be really easy to parody).
You know, I just thought about it for a bit... Street Fighter IV legitimately gave Dan a Dream Cancel (or as best as they could with the game's systems). That's amazing.
Of course, now that Street Fighter V actually *added* Dan as its first Season 5 character, he winds up getting a legitimate infinite that they wound up patching out... by randomly making his fireball *stronger* when used. Think about that for a second: he's able to keep an opponent immobilized for ~100 hits (SF5 handles infinite combos by making an opponent fall in a spinning animation after hit #100, though you can cancel into a CA on hit 99, and it will connect fully) precisely *because* he's so weak by proxy, that a stronger attack actually breaks it up.
Dan is in Street Fighter 5 now.

Given how much Seagal loves himself, and how much both the acting and martial arts communities hate him for being a malicious blowhard, I wonder if the personalities and appearance of later Dans are also influenced by the aikido master.

Dan is actually my favorite character in the entire Street Fighter series.. he's like the handicap version of Ryu and Ken..
With his one hands gadokens, i would make it so that when spammed the move inputted, his comes out the fastest of all characters but go the pituful distance the go in dan, but when charged a bit, they come as proper projectiles, perhaps to add that like an anti-spamming tool and to imply that Dan actually putting effort and seriousness to his moves, they go well.
Since in KoF the fireball deplete the special bar until empty, here is it that dan has to wait a lil bit so that he has enough energy to throw proper fireballs.

Ok, someone hear me out on this idea.
5th Marvel vs Capcom, Dan returns as a playable character but a second version is a hidden playable character and it's just Dan but he gets powers via some stupid reason, steals an Iron Man Suit, or a mutant gene awakens within him, something, and it's just Dan but he has actual powers and adapts it into his own new fighting style (which is dubbed by him as "Neo Saikyo Style" to become semi-competent, but still a joke character at the end of the day.
Maybe if he has powers or a mutant gene, perhaps he gets some stupid mostly harmless power at first glance, but can be used to fight in a very awkward and unconventional way. I'm also thinking something that fits his last name being Hibiki meaning "resonance" or "echo" in Japanese.
Edit: Better idea, he sneaks into S.H.I.E.L.D. and steals a bunch of equipment from the various Avengers, like one of the arm and legs of an Iron Man suit, Cap's Shield, Spider-Man's web shooters, Thor's hammer (which he can somehow lift), you get the idea, and tries to use the Special Attacks of the heroes but in his own Dan way that turns the move into something else. Like Dan's Gadoken is fired with the web shooter and it turns into a burning web fireball that is no stronger than the average Hadoken and doesn't even web up the opponent like Spider-Man's does.
It's just Dan making a fool of himself and trying to emulate the heroes but failing, it's perfect for Dan.
Make it happen Capcom, I'd throw money at that.

Why does no one mention that Go Hibiki is associated with Tengu masks, another reference to Takuma "Mr. Karate" Sakazaki? I'm seriously surprised you mentioned the Cyber Akuma thing but not the Tengu masks
This reference appears on SvC Chaos . When Dan meets Mr. Karate , he gets confused at first then ask the man in front of him if he is his father .

Ryo is not a rip off of Ryu, he is a homage to Ryu and ken. You can’t really rip off your own creations (the director of SF ‘87 went to SNK and started making games for them, including Art of Fighting.)

Now I cannot unsee Kage as Dan, but DAMN that really opened my eyes that Dan uses the full potential of the Ansatsuken, but the problem is that he's not a good fighter by design and thanks to his goofy and care free attitude he ain't getting to the top. Irony here though in story he can beat up thugs and unknown nameless fighters, SEAN on the other hand gets beaten by nameless and unknown fighters in his storyline, so was Sean made to make Dan look good kinda? Who knows...

I think Dan is quite similar to Ryu. Both struggle with their shadow (Jungian sense) and while Ryu suppresses his shadow Dan has encountered it. Ryu imagines light while Dan has awakened darkness. So basically all manipulations and schemes Akuma tries to employ towards Ryu are ineffective towards Dan and that makes him so much stronger. And they both defeated Sagat and it had strong effect on them. Ryu saw his shadow and got frightened by it while Dan saw it and accepted it as part of his self.
Sean is an amateur who tries to copy Ken's fighting style pretty much Sakura did with Ryu's .
But unlike Sakura , Sean isn't a prodigy ...
And unlike Dan , he didn't had a master to teach him ...

@@Lupo32 It's ridiculous to censor another fg if the char has a fireball and an uppercut move. All 2d fg's have fireball and uppercuts, for God's sake... That means Capcom would take everybody else's right to use fireballs and uppercuts in their games (actually everything else that is in Sf2, but here im focusing on those two moves).
Imagine what would have been of the gaming scene if every company that invented a gaming genre back then was capable of denying everybody else of using some of those ideas.

Ryo originally had a longer range fireball and he had a jumping fireball. I don't know why they took it away from him
Dan was so successful that Ryo changed his fighting style to mirror Dan how successful is that where the character you’re parading is now trying to be you
Another cool thing about Dan is that, as much as a joke as he is in Street Fighter, he is legitimately a very strong and skilled guy. I mean, come on, he's ripped, legitimately knows how to kick and throw a punch, can jump and roll around and keep going like nobody's business, and can even throw fireballs out of his hands! In any other more grounded setting he would be a superpowered individual. But nope, he's in Street Fighter, and he is surrounded by people who are leagues more impressive than him at what he does, and ends up looking like a joke compared to all of them.
I m sorry the snk character's are more charismatic, and Dan is not to bad in Sf game, I like it😀😅🤣

And Snk's Dan from SvC is better than Capcom's Dan. (Until Sf4 Dan, but then it's unfair to compare to a very older 2d game. Snk never made a 3d SvC)
I think my favorite layer to Dan’s joke is actually the way his moveset is designed. A running theme through the years has been that the moves Dan takes from the other Shotos are typically not great, but his limited amount of unique tools are extremely good. This ranges from stuff like his SF5 V-Skill taunts being able to do combos not normally possible to the extremes of SF4 Dan Kicks being one the single best moves in the whole game. This has lead to an idea that Saikyo Style actually is incredibly powerful, but because Dan is so obsessed with trying to master the Ansetsuken he doesn’t realize this, and he actively hampers his own fighting style by trying to copy Ken and Ryu. But despite this he does show signs of growth in 5, both in him finding new ways to use taunts in combat with the afformentioned V-Skills, but also that one of his V-Triggers is his old fireball ultra from SF4, but now it doesn’t send him flying on his butt anymore.

Though not into SF, i would love to see a future fighter to be his Dad, Go hibiki, as a sort of Flashback fighter perhaps, or one that through simulations is "sort of" real?

Love Dan. There’s something inspiring about picking an underdog joke character and succeeding against the odds with them.
Alpha 3 Dan is actually not the worst. A lot of his standing normals have good priorities and range. His supers can be combo'ed and serve as anti air.
Alpha 3 Guile is worse than Dan.
Fun fact: They started adding a damage multiplier that increases the longer his legendary taunt goes, with the peak of the possible damage going whenever he flashes his winner smile. If you want to know, at the peak, a single super would be able to take Dan’s health from full to zero.
In essence, they formalized “taunt to get bodied” with Dan.
This now beg an update with his appearance finally on SFV.
I can assure you that if Dan ever returns as a DLC mentor for SF6, everyone and their mothers will beg to use the Saikyo-Ryu fighting style for the privilege of using the legendary taunt with their created character.
One details that people miss about Dan is his name. Andy Bogard from Fatal Fury (another SNK game) has a move called Shoryudan. The move get's it name from the same idea as the Shoryuken.

Dan is the greatest joke character, and what SNK did in SvC Chaos was beautiful, with the GADOU SHO KOUKEN and the other animations (Joe Higashi and Yuri Sakazaki) of him mocking the opponents...
The special intro of him vs Yuri in CvS and CvS2 are amazing just because of that alone...
In SvC Chaos , he's constantly mistaken for Robert .
Oddly , when used as a striker on KOF 00 , there's a version of Robert who wears a white gi and black tank top , pretty much resembling Dan's costume .
