Very well articulated. As someone who has recorded quite a few concerts I never recorded even one concert or song without the full approval/request from both the artist (all of them) and the organizers. Respecting the artist and the organizer is the moral duty of all rasikas..
Yes I agree with Vijay Siva Sir. I also used to record concerts but after a point of time, I thought about this and stopped recording. Now even if I go to a live concert, I would just take a photo of the artist and then would listen the concert whole heartedly and then after concert is over, would write a review. Recording concerts by the organiser also has given a lot of excellent music and concerts by past master's like Madurai Mani Iyervaal, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Ms Amma whom I have listened only through these recordings and by some kind hearted souls like Shriram Vasudevan, Balu Karthikeyan, Carnatic Centre etc who have these concert's and upload it on UA-cam for musician's and future generation music students to be benefitted. A good point by Vijay Siva Sir. This is the reason why the great master's did not approve of recording concerts and classes in the past.
Namasté Sir 🙏 You have explained the legal and ethical angle involved in recording concerts, without the permission of the artists very well. I find another greater peril prevalent now. People produce their own recordings and upload them wherever possible. Women dance on terrace, in garden, in the backyard, on mountains and meadows and circulate them. Singers record what little they know and circulate them in social media. Whoever has some free time starts a new channel and starts to propogate the good, the bad and the ugly, quite indiscriminately. Where are we going now? 🥺 What are we doing now? 😲 Preserving arts or polluting them???🤔
Clear thoughts on recording. I consider recording without the knowledge of the performer as felony. Vijay Sir, as you have rightly put the pleasure of listening to a concert should be carried in the mind. I still remember the rendering of "Chakkani Raja" by Vidwan Chembai in the late fifties in a concert broadcast by AIR. That was the first time I heard that Kriti and was thrilled. That experience remains green in my memory. With the facility of recording available in a mobile phone, things have gone awry. Less said the better.
I totally agree with you sir, I have been to so many live concerts never ever thought of recording the concerts. Always enjoyed the concert and kept them in my mind, I can still remember some of the concerts which I heard 20 years ago. I do have a habit of making notes not sure if that is a good habit correct me if I am wrong.
Dear Vijay Siva uncle...excellently explained by you that it is the right of creator to decide whether to share or not...in this context i request you to do a chintana on role of critics in classical music , if possible...and what is role of constructive criticism and how artist's performing career has been affected due to negative criticism....dos n donts for musicologists
Ayya🙏🙏 Clarity of Recording while singing in hall is distorted I neither enjoy the present nor the recorded. Most of the music is delivered over media aa u said much clearer and neatly presented. Each time each rendation. Enjoy present.
Imagine if MMI or GNB had said this and we did not have their recordings. They embraced recordings as an expression of rasikas' love for them. I disagree with the Jayantasena example. Someone could write a review and say he sang incorrectly too. Not disagreeing with the legal aspect but our music thrives on repeated listening or going deep into an artist's repertoire. Every concert is different. Some concert might have a brilliant Keeravani that might get lost to posterity because there was no recording. VS is looking at the negative aspect. Actually the good stuff gets shared repeatedly. We can appreciate a MDR 40 years after death due to recordings. MDR's flaws are not highlighted and criticized. It's Vijay Siva's loss and it's his legacy that will be diminished
All tall claims you never had the guts to take on the big Sabhas. Lalgudi once lamented that initially was vehemently against recording and how wrong he was and said that GNB was and a few concerts available were recorded without his knowledge. That's how we get to hear the greats ,I agree with you to the extent that these recordings should not be shared for commercial considerations. Any way it is your right to do so and any one recording without the consent of the artist should never share such content.

Sir, you have elucidated the responsibilities of the Rasikas and the musician of a concert in a very succinct and polite manner. Many thanks 🙏🙏
My grandfather had about 50 cassettes(he was a sabha trustee back then). We lost all of them in the 2015 floods
Pranams Sir. Thank You 🙏
