Great video, and nice tip with the tape on the winding machine! In my experience these usually fail open. If there's a dead short then I would check it again after opening the cover. Sometimes the copper strip that the "hot" end is soldered to shorts to the cover, which is grounded. If the coil shorts at some other point - like the bottom plate you mentioned - it still leaves some resistance between the ends. A dead short happens only if the coils positive very end touches ground. There might even be a short in the coax cable.

Dude!!! That was awesome!! I always wondered how those things were put together. I wrongly assumed they were something "magical" that had something to do with the gold foil.... Homer says "Doh...."!!! Bob in Germany

I stuck a rowe goldfoil into a p90 neck pickup cover and it fits like a glove. sounded even better in combination with a different pickup of similar resistance and a good setup imo.

Love Your Videos, could you make an instruction video step by step on how to make the 1/4 inch thick flat "surface mounted" pickups that are " over priced" These pickups are used on cigar box type guitars and fun homemade instruments. There must be a way to make them yourself for less money.
It would be great if you could use common readily available parts from hardware store or internet and give us item description , parts number, where you obtained it . There are a lot of videos on UA-cam but I could not find anything worth watching on how to make thin surface mount pickups. Most videos take for granted the viewer has some experience with pickup builds or the video is just not filmed well enough to follow . thank you The Cigar Box Guitar community thanks you..

Being myself a great proponent of these old, cheap 'gold foil' type pups, I appreciate your approach and tips for rewinding/refurbishing them.
Question re magnets: most of the ones I've encountered, (by Teisco) use an odd 'rubberized' type of magnet that seems kind of weak. Have you found a source for replacing these, or a method by which to re-gauss them? Any other comments or experiments with magnets on these?
    Thanks, Paisley.P

So you didn't repaint it or taped the inside to prevent it from shorting? By the way, cool video!

What’s it cost to rewind a set of those? I have some off a harmony... one still actually works but the other is shot!

Thanks! Great video! Do you test for a short with a multimeter set on 'ohms'? Sorry for my ignorance...

Mark J Yes, set your meter to ohms when looking for a short period this one red zero ohms so it was an obvious short.

    Hello excellent work.
Could you help me by telling me the gauge of the wire and the number of turns.
I have a silvertone bobcat guitar and the neck pickup is not working.
    thanks for your help.
