    A further tip about connecting with the boom. Once connected, there is a tendency for our aircraft to slow down a bit and start descending a bit too, so, be mindful of that and prepare for slight adjustments once connected. This is contrary to what real pilots report, that the boom will sort of pull you around a bit, but in DCS, it doesn't work that way.

    Nice video, should help lots of people struggling. btw in DCS boom or basket refuel rate is the same.

      You are right. I found this article from 2006 that talks about exactly this. The boom has a higher rate, however, when it is refueling fighters, it cannot use its full power: "A single flying boom can transfer fuel at approximately 6,000 lbs per minute. A single hose-and-drogue can transfer between 1,500 and 2,000 lbs of fuel per minute. Unlike bombers and other large aircraft, however, fighter aircraft cannot accept fuel at the boom’s maximum rate. (Today’s fighter aircraft can accept fuel at 1,000 to 3,000 lbs per minute whether from the boom or from the hose-and-drogue.). Thus, the flying boom’s primary advantage over the hose-and-drogue system is lost when refueling fighter aircraft." Tks man for the comment! Very nice! Appreciated! 🍻

    Nice video. Find it way easier in the F-14 with the basket and seeing the pod on the wing and having reference points on the canopy bow. Of course, your don't have al these on the F-16.
    Doesn't matter in DCS, but switching radar and emitters off is nice. Don't fry the tanker crew in front of you with all the radiation. ;-)

    The 16,18,&14 oscillate/ pitch up down way to easy vs the M-2000 making refueling very difficult. If you have the M-2000 start your practice there before moving to the others.

    Rule of thumb for approach speed:
    To see the distance to the tanker in DED set AA Tacan to tanker.
    Assume tanker's speed is roughly 300 kts..
    At distance = 1.0 Nm -> overtake speed = +100 kts = 400kts CAS
    0.9 Nm +90 kts = 390kts CAS
    0.8 Nm +80 kts = 380 kts CAS
    : :
    0.2 Nm +20 kts = 320 kts CAS
    0.1 Nm +10 kts = 310 kts CAS
    When close adjust to actual speed

    If you are inside the zone and its not connecting, just hit him with the Ready Pre Contact, and it usually triggers him to connect the boom.. usually after disconnecting he gets stuck in that state

    Learning to AA refue the F16 has been the single hardest thing to do in DCS, in my opinion. I believe it's because of the lack of depth perception. And the variables introduced with trackir.

    • @nazguldcs
      @nazguldcs  2 місяці тому

      Oh yes. It's not easy. The fact that we are under the tanker without being able to see him completely and that we also cannot see the boom makes the refuel quite difficult. One thing that hinders my depth perception is zoom out. makes the image very distorted in the corners.

      @@nazguldcs you should try VR, really helps with the depth perception.

      IIRC, I've heard some actual fighter pilots talking about how refuelling (and flying the ball) in DCS is way harder than the real thing because of the lack of depth perception and no feel for the aircraft's energy state... no sensorial feedback.

  • @headintclouds3657
    @headintclouds3657 2 місяці тому

    Refuelling in the Viper takes practice, followed by a lot of practice until you only need some practice to remain competent. If in doubt, practice. A light touch on the controls rather than a death grip helps but not as much as a ton of practice. Got it? Practice makes permanent!
