A lot of these exercises are great. I notice so many exercises done here are for strengthening and stretching the hips for mobility. A lot of this was out of fashion at the time and now being discovered again.
I remember I saw some photos of this workout on paper decades ago. Inoki asked Gotch for lessons in preparation for some big match. I saw movie for the first time. This is amazingly beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I am 55 years old and still having push-up in this style every morning.
I went to Mr. Gotch's house (yes, I still say MISTER Gotch, even though he didn't stand on ceremony) for a workout with he and my father up in Lutz. He would've been 54. I thought I was in good shape since it was the middle of wrestling season. I was sore for a month. (His pitbull went through the same workout , lol)
Basic Pahlevani wrestling workout. Every wrestler in Iran and India does these before training sessions. I'm guessing Gotch also learned it from there.
If it weren’t for Japanese Pro wrestling we wouldn’t have modern MMA as we have it since it started with some wrestlers who didn’t want scripted matches all of the time.
Modern mma in terms of promotions and rule sets and organization. You can go back to the Roman Empire and before that Ancient Greece if you want to be a stickler but original comment is accurate. Modern MMA owes its existence to these guys/ Japanese pro wrestling.
Exactly!!!...Plus a lot of stories from those old "Carnival Circus" days of wrestling. ..."Shoot wrestling that would get serious. Old time stories of guys eyes getting gouged, ears getting ripped and limbs getting crippled. They got very rough back in the day.
Karl Gotch learned everything from HIndu Kushti wrestlers. He said, that when he was in India, they'd wake up at 5, take a bath, read Hanuman Chalisa and then do Abhyas (Training) for 5 hours straight and almost all of them ate a vegetarian diet except for Gotch ofcourse. This is what shapes you to be a legend.
Gotch is a great trainer and god! Bob backlund would of been much better by training under this man! Not to take anything away from bob! He can still beat the current wrestlers of today! A dying breed!
I see a lot of shall we say familiar--(or very close to...) yoga, chi gung, martial arts iron body, animal style floor exercises. To name a few. I'm sure I'm missing some.
Heavy macebells and Indian Clubbells were also regularly used. Gotch was a solid heavyweight to begin with so the idea he made himself huge just by calisthenics is not true, although they did of course help him greatly in his ability to move like a much lighter person.
@@scientificwrestling Man! I wonder if asahi journal has more unreleased footage of this. What i've briefly researched. There may be an extensive archive. On the hunt,.Hope to 1 day have ah Cigar with Jake.
I think Karl Gotch is probably still in better shape than most of us, and he's been dead for 15 years.
He's probably buried in a Wrestling Bridge position
No doubt
Amazing footage!

I hate how much wrestlers and BJJ guys SHIT on stretching systems like Yoga... it will improve your mobility and reduce injuries.
if you love this stuff check out indian wrestling workouts. not too crazy and not too easy. the perfect balance of cardio and weight training
@@qazmko22 firas zahabi hates alot of those yoga systems. He finds that it weakens a lot of his grapplers.
@@mattl8774 and Rickson Gracie LOVES yoga... i guess it depends on application.
Inoki and Gotch both looked in GREAT form here! Wow!
You know that Antonio never forgot any of this. It's like being in someones memories.

wow Gotch's quads are huge...he makes Enoki look skinny

Love seeing footage of Karl so much is so few in far between for the amount of things Karl has done. Thanks for digging this out Jake!
I found it online. Someone named Kyon uploaded it
I had a wrestling coach who trained us similar to this. The assistant coach was his brother.Their last name was Stevens.Mike, Mark. GOD bless

Yeah, I believe he spent a lot of time training with the Pelwhani wrestlers out in India.
He told me the name of the man he learned from but I've forgotten it. It may be in KarlGotch.com somewhere.
@Gotchism4Life yes, he told me his name but I forgot it. He was Persian not Indian.

Basic wrestling exercises true, Wigan did and does still do them

@aperezdeal they have been doing MMA in Brazil for the last 70 years.
@@olegariomartinez6807Also those old wrestlers like Stu Hart could certainly handle themselves for real, they were plenty tough back then.

There is a lot you can do with just body weight.
You also need a partner usually. It pays to be social 😢
Wow, no equipment required except a medicine ball, face cloth and deck of cards 👍
Absolutely badass
This was before inoki vs the legend tiger jit singh who was a powerlifter
Karl Gotch trained Inoki against Ali!!!!
No he did not. Though he was invited to be at Inoki's corner, he never trained Inoki specifically for the Ali match.

This is really great training video. I really want to visit this wrestling gym. If you know contact please let me know
Some of these pushup versions have been taken from Persian/Indian pushup styles known as "dands"

can you get their physique with bodyweight workouts and wrestling only? they must have been weightlifting too right?
Heavy macebells and Indian Clubbells were also regularly used.
Gotch was a solid heavyweight to begin with so the idea he made himself huge just by calisthenics is not true, although they did of course help him greatly in his ability to move like a much lighter person.
Imagine if Gotch went to Holland and trained Muay Thai for two yrs at Mejiro Gym. He'd dominate the UFC heavyweight division
Karl Gotch was born in 1924, so that's unlikely. Now, if he was born, say, 50 years later and still had those same skills...
I don't know about dominate. He was a big fish in a small pond.
