excellent video. David does a fantastic job at a clear and detailed look at leica!!!!
It’s hard not to think that Leica is pricing themselves out of a huge number of profitable sales. I’m pretty much ground zero (I would think) for a potential Leica M10 customer. I love candid photography and I often travel internationally just to take pictures. I’ve owned a number of film Leica M cameras, and I have a small collection of M-mount glass. I’m in my 40s and I have a good job with plenty of disposable income and money in the bank.
I’m sure that I would LOVE shooting with the Leica M10-D, and I could pretty easily afford one without breaking the bank. But here’s the thing: I don’t like to be price gouged. I mean, hell, half the reason I’m in good financial shape is that I don’t spend frivolously on overpriced consumer goods.
In 1986 the then state-of-the-art Leica M6 sold for $1,695. That was a lot of money back then. In today’s dollars, it would be about $3,900. If the M10 were a $5,000 camera, I would say to myself: “Okay, that’s roughly what a Leica digital M should cost in 2019.” And I would order one tomorrow. But $8,000? No way. Leica makes great cameras, but I’m not paying a 60% markup for that Leica logo engraving.
On the whole, I guess I shouldn’t expect anything different. Leica’s pricing simply reflects our society’s massive wealth gap and drive for status among the well-off.
Thank you for the thoughtful comment. The Leica M10 isn't a mass market consumer product. They are not made in China. Rather, each camera is hand-built in Germany with components made in Germany and at their fabrication plant in Portugal. The designs are in-house. The raw materials are premium. If you tour the factory in Wetzlar, you can see *why* these cameras and lenses cost what they do. The engineers and technicians are passionate about the brand and are truly dedicated to delivering excellence. It's an amazing corporate culture, similar to what you'd see at Porsche, for example.
The M10-P is $700 more expensive than the standard M10. A niche product means less production. Which means the R&D and additional parts, labor, production line setup, etc. need to be amortized over a smaller number of units sold. Special, short-run products across many industries are almost always priced a bit higher than stock configurations. In this case, that premium ends up being a bit less than 10%.
As far as getting an M10 for $5000 - easy. Just get a lightly used one. The depreciation is baked in and some of the cameras look like new. And once initially depreciated, they maintain this value for long time. Let's say you buy a used M10 for $5000, use it for a year or two, then sell it for $4500. Your monthly use cost is only $30-40. Try doing that with most consumer goods or cars.

Leica cameras cost every dollar they sell for. They’re hand built by professionals that actually make a salary, the amount of hours and dedication spent into each camera is what gives it its price point, not an artificial markup strategy. I can’t stand people against luxury items. If you don’t want to spend the money, go and buy a Sony, no big deal, you don’t need to complain about its price. It’s like watching a rolls Royce ad and complaining that Toyota Corollas are great cars for a fraction of the price. It’s just ridiculous.
Rather than the company 'gouging' you, Leica cameras are quality. If you have the money, owning a camera which you know takes great shots, is well built and makes the shooting experience such a joy (remember fun?), is good enough reason for me. Oh...and they hold their price too.
It's funny: I thought that a digital camera without a screen, even a Leica M, would be silly and impractical. But using my M7 for a while, it occurs to me that with practice, you don't really need to see what you've shot right away. And if you really need some kind of live view or immediate feedback, there's the Visoflex. Being able to control all menu functions with your phone means that you dont miss any of the features of a digital camera. I deeply enjoy the feeling of my M7, so perhaps the M10 D could work for me.
is the white paint just old and dirty on the M10? M10D brand new looks so sharp.
What are the options for formatting memory cards?
Can it capture images in WiFi mode? Or do you have to return to On mode? Just wondering if the phone app works like a wireless tether.
You can take pictures in Wi-Fi mode and you can also command the shutter from the phone but it drains the battery of the camera extremely fast keeping the wifi on.
You wanna learn how to really shoot an M? Like I mean REALLY, like dude, you gotta know your shit! Period. I don’t own one yet, but this is along the lines of what Peter Karbe tried to encourage in all of us whose soul and joy will always be in finding our own photographic story. No more no less. Like his comparison to learning to write patiently and well - perhaps not easily or quickly - with a fountain pen. Much like any classic M Leica. This one will reward you for your patience, thoughtfulness, and acquired skills that work integrally with your photography. Only as good as your honesty to your work. Only you, and no one else, at the end of story that is yours only. I’d love to pair this to my 75mm Noct. and have at it for a while. It might help me separate me more from my ego, and not need a crutch for a look at each shot. It will force you to “ feel” your work until that is not uncomfortable - and makes you at peace, in that it is the only way you learn what you think you knew... when you can do that truthfully, you grew up just a bit...
I’ll stick with my M3.
next step is a digital camera that only holds memorycards for 36 shot which you have to digitally develop somehow, all for 'analog aesthetic'
and some people are to lazy to shoot film but want to 'look' and 'feel' analog. I'll stick with my M2..
Film sucks compared to these digitals...
Good luck but the m10-D is a piece of beauty and you should use it so you can appreciate it
nice video, im just so curious who this camera was actually made for.. I have a M2.
very, /very/ rich people.
Does it automatically recognise the lenses used? I do not think the lens detection mode is included in the FOTOS menu.
Yes, the M10-D has automatic lens detection when using 6-bit coded lenses.
And when not using 6bit lenses ? How you choose a similar lens ?
The M10D is .5mm smaller in thickness, I feel like the handling of M10D would be a big benefit, like the M3, no screen or buttons means the grip is larger utilising more back real estate
Thanks a lot for the video!
M7 looks much better than M10-D, M-10's ISO dial looks cheap, should just use M7 style...
The M7 dial is also plastic.
Any focus peaking through viewfinder?
it's a rangefinder not an evf and has the rangefinder focusing patch
This right here is my grail digital camera... So hard to find online!
They are out there now.
Your mug is missing the original Summar.
Excellent !!
The back knob seems easier to turn as compared to the original Leica MD
Hmmm, a Leica or a Rolex, which is more useful?
Huawei does both.
Rolex. Will last longer than the leica Digital.
@@TheBrickCraftsman ... Maybe, but only if you service the automatic movement and water resistant gaskets in the Rolex every couple of years.... Frankly, given the image quality of modern digital Leica cameras...and build quality of Leica's in general.. there is no reason you can't keep your Leica digital or film bodies going for several decades with proper maintenance ... the lenses will last way beyond that.
poch robles lol this. My p20 pro is even better in the dark compared to my a7
Hmmm...a Leica or a car. Which is more useful?
couldve been better if the film advance worked, coudve used it as a mechanical shutter saving tons of battery
Show us the Leica M10-P Safari next please:D
For hobyyist and photo artist this camera is the perfect camera for them.
Nice.
I like it but why does it cost 8000$?
The company needs to buy toilet paper and pay for the salaries of their executives.
Cos you get a presentation box.
Anyone use the Visoflex with their M10-D If so, is nailing focus generally easier? or how about R-mount adapted lenses. #askingformydentistfriend
With focus peaking and focus assist magnification, it can be easier, yes. Works great on R lenses as well. Of course, some people prefer the rangefinder experience, but with an EVF you can choose which to use when.
@@RedDotForum with the Viso flex you can use any adapted lens. The M10-D essentially becomes a mirror less camera.
This camera is a non sense. Just buy an old film camera and your done, if you want the old analogic experience. You can find an old Olympus OM-1 for 100 bucks and great vintage lenses are cheap.
I coultn't agree more. I would love a very simple digital camera (I personnally don't need the rear lcd screen, nor many of the functionnalities of modern cameras), but this one is just made for people who think a Leica is enough to make them photographers. That Thumbs thing is just like a fake engine sound on an expensive electric car...The price tag goes with this idea (of the Marketing Department more than any other department), to aim rich, older, ignorant wannabes photographers,
@@GBO76exactly
Huh? This is a digital camera.
in my opinion i always hide the levver on my m3
I love this camera - the design, the compact design, and the lenses. But it's too precious and expensive to walk around in the streets with it.
I would suggest most common thieves don't understand the vintage look of a Leica. They would most likely target a large modern looking Japanes camera. Plus, even if they did, this camera in the review has no red dot.
If you can comfortably afford this camera, you can afford good insurance, and you'll be comfortable using it.
Nice & Thanks :)
a) how does this video get 61 disklikes? and b) Dave .. answer my email! I want that Lightroom settings template!
a blinking light on a leica m model... it just is a poke in the eye with a burnt stick
Poor video. Goes in depth about the instruction booklets and manuals but does not even bother to take the accessories out of their bags? also, the exposure on all of the shots of the camera are way too dark. cant see the camera at all.
underexposed video
I think if you buy such a beautiful special camera like this, it should have a special strap. The strap you get for this is shit. I bought my Leica q-P and I loved the special strap it came with the camera
glue your phone to the back of the camera lol
It should be illegal to but a visoflex on this camera. I mean COME ON!!!
Having the option to use an EVF doesn't mean you have to use one. But it does mean you *can* use one if you want to. :)
I would own one of these if it wasn’t for the insane fake advance lever
That is the only reason to buy one.
It really is a brilliant thumb rest.
Just buy a film Leica...🙄.
The repetitive Muzak in the background is a sloppy addition to an already boring presentation. If you’re presenting a top of the line article put some more effort into it. Ask your colleagues at the LHSA about new ideas ...
👎🏻
The thumb lever is so ridiculous
Its a no for me.
Overprice German engineering.
What a joke of a camera !
So, in other words, Leica being Leica. Charge more for less. You're being very long-winded.
Des Kodur or they just charge more for a smaller production volume. The M10 is cheaper to make if you devide production cost and development cost by sold units over a period of time.
Some pay 20 000 usd for a watch that tells time less accurate than a 20usd quartz watch. And some pay 10k for a solid digital camera and lence with a back to the old days camera feel.
Try finding one today for that price. Less than a two year run of manufacturing. It’s essentially a collector’s camera.
A ridiculous price for a ridiculous camera
The M10-D is a niche product with very low production volume. As such, it demands a bit of a price premium in order to cover R&D and tooling costs. But, the camera is also quite unique in what it offers the user - namely a 'pure' analog shooting experience with all the image quality benefits of digital. I personally know very happy users of the M10-D. For them, it was exactly what they wanted. It may not be for you, or for most photographers for that matter, but the fact that Leica actually made such a unique option available to those that do want it - is pretty cool.
@@RedDotForum for me, it gave me GAS for a few Barracks, anM2;M4,M4-2,P,M-P digital CL and now I’m craving an M-A! The M10-D causes severe GAS.
It is the shame that LEICA did not use the wonderful forwarding lever to advance the exposure as with DMR/R8,9 manually, but for thumb resting, instead!
BULLSHIT, LEICA, do you hear me? That way you can organic feel of the analog M, as well as saving the battery power.
