Thank you I have enjoyed some of your best notcasts (U2, Suede) very much. This one earns a special mention. I have blamed myself later not being alert at the time to join the Elevation Tour. Saw Joshua, Zoo, Pop. So wtf happened?! I found myself asking and definitely after seeing U2 Go Home etc. I could not figure out why I was sleeping that time. But! Now I remembered. I agree with your view of the album I felt quite the same when it came out and oh yes, the tickets were very hard to get and expensive too. But the most crucial part was the album. Some great songs but at the same time some kinda lame. Plus the feeling of it. - So you freed me from my regrets. Thank you! And I loved & adored 360 Tour anyways.
In all honesty I feel that this was the album where U2 decided to conform to the needs of success rather than their art. They became more streamlined as an organisation, after the losses or narrow profit margins of their 90's endeavours. POP sounded like the band were breaking at the seams, not knowing what direction to go in. 'ATYCLB' brought clarity, but was also a step back. They played it safe. Fair enough, we all have bills to pay.
Another good NotCast. ATYCLB is the hangover to Pop and whilst not being able to top their earlier work it was a successful reboot. If they hadn’t stripped it back I think they would not have managed a dignified transition to the elder statesmen of rock. I don’t think the 2002 Super Bowl show would have impacted in the same way in yellow, orange or big cowboy hats. Yes side 2 leaves a lot to be desired and since the 2004 Complete U2 we got to hear some of the shelved tracks its a pity they didn’t drill down a bit harder. I agree with all the other comments and like me I know I know there were lots of die-hard fans who never got a whiff when the tour came round. Then again ‘underselling’ was a big thing back then and like others have pointed out U2 had to balance the books and reset the dial for the 21st century
@@markreed4543 I don't rate the latest two albums as much, but ATYCLB you are probably correct that the second half is quite bad and New York is demeaning to most. 1. HTDAAB 2. NLOTH 3. SOI 4. ATYCLB 5. SOE. So other than ATYCLB, the order of release. Atomic Bomb and No Line I almost feel like are a pair of albums of the 00's - one loud, high-energy and extraordinarily guitar driven record and the other is the opposite - quieter, more experimental, low-energy mostly throughout.

Agreed!
It was a nice step back, it was the next album that for me was the problem
Have you done a video on the elevation tour?

How would you rank the 21st century albums?

The album that was half as good as PoP but yet some how raked in the Grammys
I actually like the backing track to New York but Bono murders it sadly
Oh feck where has the facial hair gone? he looks different. who is that? (I was thinking to myself when the video started)
I took a bit out to get a spot under the beard out, and it looked weird so I took it all off.. IT WILL RETURN!
