    I learned with this book! Got my 1st garage band audition in 1989. We played “Sweet Child O Mine”. Set up my kit lefty and rocked out with my mini-sticks. Bass player told me to add a fill and I was like “You mean a mini-solo?” 10 minutes later I was waiting in the driveway for Mom to pick me up. Those guys didn’t know crap. (My solo career was short lived because you can only play Wipe Out once before folks want to beat you up!) mom? Come and get me.

    3:31. Exactly. My jazz experience is minimal, but in college, the one year I played in the jazz ensemble, I learned that it was the bass that set the beat, style, and tempo. The drums were there for accent and color….and we had a phenomenal jazz drummer in Bobby Adams. Oddly enough, I can’t remember the name of the bassist. LOL. (By the way, my year in jazz ensemble was way back in 1981.)

    • @andramoie
      @andramoie Рік тому +2

      I'd argue that the interaction between bass and drum differ for jazz vs rock.
      In jazz, the bass is the time keeper and defines rhythmic structure, and the drum adds color, but for rock it's often the other way around.
      I guess that's why in Jazz having a bass but no drums is more common than the other way around, while in rock there are duos of drum and guitar, but bass and no drums is pretty much unheard of.

    Wow! this book was so inspirational that I learned drums too! Although, my sticks were about twice as big as I would've liked them, and my snare drum actually worked. It was so sad, but I went with it, even holding the sticks "correctly". After getting rejected by at least 50 bands because I should "stop playing f***ing wipeout the entire time and adding a drum solo every 8 measures", and also completely skipping school entirely (especially 6th grade band class), I was allowed into a band made up of entirely 9 year-olds. I couldn't play any of the music given to me because it was too refined and the notes actually lined up. I could tell my mini-solos (fills for uncultured people) really stood out because everyone stopped playing entirely. I don't know if they liked my solos or my epic drum head better. Earlier today, my dad left for some milk. I don't know why, but I think it's so I can get stronger bones to improve my drumming. So, overall, I loved that book so much, and it really improved my life.

    This was likely designed for kids in elementary school. The smaller stick size is likely more appropriate for their smaller hands. They are comically small for us, but I bet a kid in their target age group would find them easier to hold (and use with real instruction) than full size sticks.

    I gotta say this paragraph made my mind explode, by the fact that even though drum kit is an instrument, it is part of a category called percussion. The funny thing is that drums aren’t the most oldest type of instrument, but rather percussion. Also the rock music part is stupid because it isn’t actually drums, more like clave. Heck, clave isn’t even suitable because it’s made out of wood, not rocks. Funny book indeed!
