Cassette Beasts OST:
-Wherever We Are Now (Instrumental)
-Kayleigh's Theme
-Same Old Story
-New Wirral Park
I've been playing Cassette Beasts since a streamer friend of mine played it on stream and it's a game I've enjoyed to hell and back for multiple reasons, the 'Shinies' aren't as much of a pain to get, the 'shinies' called Bootlegs (which fits the theme more) actually do something by changing types, sticker sets and so on.
The boss fights are all treats and I ADORE how the music changes based on if you're fused or not with the former letting you hear the lyrics and absolutely jam out
Yeah I loved how the battles and music actually are connected like that
@@ConnorRascal Both versions of the music is dance worthy by themselves and some of them just makes me want to dance and sing
@@arachineatzeer7478 If this OST released on cassette, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Like genuinely one of my favorite game OSTs
Wait shinies actually matter now?
@@TrulyAtrocious yeah they do, and they actually spawn a reasonable amount
Calling any monster catching game a “Pokemon Clone” is always just such narrow mindedness it hurts
As a Yo-kai Watch and Pokémon fan it's honestly both a bit saddening yet also quite refreshing to see that indie monster tamers ended up better in quality than any mainline Pokémon games nowadays.
As now Deputy Commissioner Raymond Holt once said...
"VINDICATION!"
Yo-kai Watch and an Brooklyn 99 fan!
You dropped this king👑
Most people in the monster tamer community are tired of the label "Pokemon clone". Cassette Beasts did not deserve to be disrespected.
Pokemon wasn't even the first game with the idea. (shin) megami tensei to my knowledge did the whole monster taming thing first and monster taming as an element was also present in games such as dragon quest V. Sure pokemon definitely put it's own spin on the concept and has obviously been extremely influential but it doesn't own the conept
Imo this isn't even a "Pokemon Clone" for me seems like an inspiration from Digimon Frontier, where the protagonist group transform into the Digimon to fight instead of sending them to fight.
"I' used to be obsessed with pokemon when I was younger"
Hey, me too! I remember getting Gold as my first Gameboy Color game!
"I grew up playing Black 1 and 2-"
OH GOD I'M SO OLD
Y’all, they missed the chance to call fusion a remix…. 0/10 not buying
That's actually a good idea
The name Remix is actually used in game already. Remixes are the game's version of evolution for you beasts, and many beasts have branching and hidden evolution routes.
@@WilliamSyler oh right I forgot that was what evolutions were called
they could've called it a mashup
@@WilliamSyler Actually those are Remasters. IMO Bootlegs should’ve been Remixes, and Fusions could’ve been Collabs or something.
I was playing this game late at night. Let me tell you, the tone shift with the archangel you face off with Viola... I had to turn all my lights back on. 😂
Tell me about it. She does deliver a good "Shut Up, Hannibal!" to him, though. XD
The moment that main town music started playing i knew this game was going to be an absolute hit.
From the whole 'being sent to another world full of monsters', fusion, and transforming into the monsters; this reminds me more of Digimon than Pokemon honestly. The only 'Pokemon' thing about it are the monster designs being vaguely 'pokemon-esque' and the whole ranger thing being gyms basically.
edit: If you want people to play the game themselves, you should probably link the game's steam page in the description y'know.
Ah I forgot, ty for pointing that out
I just love that people are still saying the word "Pokeclone" with a straight face.
Like, yeah, Call of Duty is my favourite "Doom Clone".
Yeah but pokemon is literally like, THE monster catching game, doom was just a good/popular game, but not THE game like pokemon is.
I think it's because after a while, things stop getting compared to what it's "cloning" because it becomes popular and people see that there's a lot of differences if you stop to have a deeper look
@@Zanaki113it was really Dragon Quest first.
It’s explicitly a game aping pokemon. The whole art style pf the monsters is just parodies of existing pokemon instead of just creating new stuff.
@@Theyungcity23 can you give some examples? (Time stamps please)
This game is what pokemon fans have literally been asking for FOR YEARS. It gives you more of a GOOD GAME and less Nintendogs features like gamefreak
This game is a what if Pokemon but the devs still have passion.
Man the QoL for this game is amazing.
- Fast travel are easy and unlocked immediately.
- Baton Pass as core mechanic instead of a skill
- Overworld skill that can also have effect on starting a combat
- skill that can be switched easily. Even during combat.
Due to the. 2v2 format, there's a skill that can only exist in that format that is Mind Meld. Which is basically sharing skill between 2 beasts without limit.
So yeah this game has no limitations.
Also if you're wondering, there's a lot of build where you can ORKO any enemies at turn zero
The AP system reminds me a lot of FP from Fossil Fighters, another monster-catching type RPG series that got overshadowed by Pokemon. Between that, the deeper mechanics and the creepy tone of the Archangels I'm definitely intrigued and am putting this on my wishlist.
Fossil Fighters is such a cool game, I like never hear anyone talk about it
@@ConnorRascal I love fossil fighters SO much :( They need to bring it back :(
@@willtg4508 they did for the 3ds, but the battle system was changed to be more like Pokemon, they took away the rotation system and all the complexity it gave.
@@aynonymos yep I have that one, definitely didnt compare to frontiers
@@ConnorRascal Jaiden Animations did a fun video following the story of her playthrough. It isn't really an analysis and didn't talk about the battle system. But honestly the game is carried by its writing and the "capture" mechanic equivalent.
Digimon is still an odd one to be called a pokemon clone since uh, it's pretty different.
I'll be honest, the only thing Pokemon and Digimon share is that you gather creatures to fight with and they can evolve.
Digimon though, digimon can deevolve and get multiple different forms and there's more options to what you want your mon to become, there's no set evolutionary path and you can go back down the line to do something else. Plus uh they did multiple things where they had biomerge where the humans literally became a digimon with their partner and fought together and the whole merging with other digimon to make a new one was also digimon's thing so unlike Pokemon that had the same thing all the time, Digimon tried new things all the time.
But yeah digimon's story in games usually wasn't too great though (though I think cyber sleuth's story is at least interesting enough that I want to keep going and it looks nice so there's that) and tends to be a slog so yeah major sad thing since I like the series a ton, it's just really hard to commit to a grind. ;w;
Anyway, this game sounds interesting, I'mma go ahead and wishlist it haha.
Yeah you're right Digimon is really different than pokemon, so it makes me sad when people just call it a pokemon rip off or clone.
@@ConnorRascal well people forget digimon was created as a series that themed around the tamagatchi items(without being specifically tamagatchi's but the toys they sold were), but pokemon had come out 2 years prior.
@@Purexfallenxangel90 Ok? That doesn't mean the people who call Digimon a Pokemon clone/ripoff are right. The fact its a spinoff of Tamagatchi kind of invalidates the whole "Digimon is a Pokemon ripoff" even more. I don't know what you're trying to say here dude.
@@ripleyandweeds1288 i was just saying that people forget the original reason why digimon existed (ie tamagachi) and due to pokemon being created 2 years prior is why others think its a "rip off" of pokemon when it wasnt.
@@ripleyandweeds1288 Kinda weird that that offended you, considering the fact that they were agreeing with OP and further explaining how different Pokemon and Digimon are.
I just finished the game a few days ago, its honestly peak- I fell in love with the characters, the mechanics, the monster's, even the lore at the end of the game when everything begins to make so much more sense. It was honestly a perfect game, and im telling you for a FACT that im buying the dlc.
I think my favourite part of the Archangels is how there are only 4 that actually fit the world. Every other one is done with a unique artstyle, notably not pixel-art.
Of the ones that do fit (spoilers ahead)
Shining Kuneko was created by our partner (so is supposed to be familiar)
Ms. Amber gets a pass for being both friendly, and a building they had to make explorable.
The Mer-line is the island of New Wirral itself, it fits the world in its artstyle because it IS the world in a literal sense
and Al has a body that fits, and a face that doesn’t. Which I believe represents how Al IS very much not of “this world” but New Wirral, acting as a sort of prison for him, is the safest place for him to be. (He’s not supposed to be here, but he very much SHOULD be here, and nowhere else)
Aleph reminds me of bill cipher and i love it
I went to the same school as the guys who made this game, there's a ton of easter eggs in there for people from The Wirral which is cool to see!
I knew the name couldn’t just be a coincidence 😂😂
But were you in the same class/year/whatever they call it across the pond?
I finished the game and everything that can be done pre post game, and honestly...
What a game! It was amazing
My one gripe about this game is that the fusions are very… hit or miss, they’re either sick as hell or mountain with a gamer headset and while that sounds cool it didn’t look cool, but on the other hand given the sheer magnitude of how many designs they had to make (more than 14,000) like yeah ok I get how that might have been a bit of a struggle cause god damn is that ambitious
Yeah some are definitely better than others
imagine if that game had a community server where people were allowed to make custom fusion sprites so that they could be added into the game lol
I have never devotedly played another monster catching game; but I was instrigued by the visuals of this one upon stumbling on it in Steam and your video has sold me on buying it
Astonished to see such a well made video by a channel that only has 149 (now 150) subscribers
I have yet to play a Pokémon game and am only into it because of the designs right now. But, ya know, there's 1000+ Pokémon, I'll probably like at least half of them. Well, Cassette Beasts has 129 Beasts, and I love every. Single. One of them. This is the only Pokémon-like I've seen so far that got this reaction out of me. Like, I haven't played this game yet either, and I'm already making Fakemon from it. That's how much I love these designs.
game creator: *makes the mist unique monster collector ever made*
a random dude: ThAtS a pOkEmOn cLoNe!!!!1!!
i found this game on game pass and i absolutely LOVED it
Is it on Xbox game pass
@@bluefacestan1826 yes
The Archangels might be one my favourite sets of bosses in any game ever. They took the whole "completely and deliberately unfitting artstyle" idea that the likes of Madoka Magica's Witches used and just RAN with it, seeing things like stopmotion skeletons or fully 3D monstrosities in a game thoroughly based around sprites and pixelly graphics just perfectly sells how eldritch, powerful and downright WRONG they are, perfectly mirroring how the game's characters react to Archangels like just looking at the thing hurts their heads. The game effectively weaponizes the the clash in art styles, it's absolutely fantastic and I could gush about it all day.
This game looks good and i can see the caring and love of the developers. The premise is more like digimon than pokémon, with people turning into the monsters and being brought into a strange island and reminded evangelion too, because fighting eldritch horrors named with angels names.
I love Cassette Beasts. It's like Digimon Frontier only all the major boss are Kirby Final Bosses.
Honestly I came into this game on gamepass expecting the designs to atleast have a couple that stand out.
Then I saw candevil and instantly knew the game would have some amazing sprites.
I also absolutely love the idea of bootlegs actually causing the typing to change
Your One Piece comparison is exactly where my mind went when you were explaining the themes of the quest, so I definitely wasn't as big a stretch as you thought.
I'm glad I'm not the only one lol
@@ConnorRascal i was kinda surprised when the next words about it matched the thoughts I was having. "Wasn't that kinda the theme of Fran- oh my goodness he went there!"
Legitimately happy to see it referenced like this.
I played the demo and it got me hooked! I'm gonna be picking it up soon for the switch
I haven't finished Cassette Beasts, but Kuneko's quest line has definitely been a highlight for me as well :)
Huh... I saw this on Steam a while back, and wouldn't you know, I shrugged it off as 'Just another Pokémon-clone'. You gotta admit, there's quite a few of those on Steam, like Nexomon or Corromon, that literally ARE just trying to copy the Pokémon formula, while maybe adding a slightly more mature tone and story in order to suit an older audience. For the most part, they're predictable, uninspired, mid at best, and just makes you realize how much care and polish went into the classic Pokémon-games - because it's *absent* there.
Seems I was wrong to assume that Casette Beasts fell into this category, though. Methinks I'll give it a chance... thanks for the heads-up!
Did you just say Nexomon is uninspired and had no care put into it 💀💀💀 to be fair I played the second one so I can't judge on the first one if that's what you're commenting on but if we're both thinking of the same game then that could just honestly genuinely not be *FURTHER* from the truth. I put more hours into that game then some actual canon Pokémon games, and this is coming from someone that has genuinely tried to get back into stuff and hadn't managed to get into something in a way I can't put down in ages. That game is BRIMMING with nooks and crannies to explore, genuinely really funny dialogue, and bits and pieces and quests everywhere you look if you wanna find them, has an incredible artstyle and overall design and really really engaging main story- all while even making sure there's value in replayability and you can customise the game without changing the code in any way straight up in the menu to facilitate niche playstyles of the community like randomised encounters or nuzlockes or even heightening or lowering the difficulty. Like sure it's not a perfect game even if it gets pretty close and you also don't HAVE to like it, but like common my guy💀💀💀 don't just say there was no love put into it. It's very much doing its own thing not just a clone and going way harder at it then it had to.
@@Art-enjoyer_Fern Well, conversely, I haven't played the second one - I played the first one, and soon lost interest. Not saying it doesn't have some kind of value or care put into it, but you can't claim, with a straight face, that it isn't designed to be a Pokémon clone. It may be a GOOD clone - that's a matter of taste - and it may have all manners of sterling qualities on top of that, but it's still a Pokémon-game with the serial-number filed off, impossible to play without comparing it directly to its obvious inspiration.
Cassette Beasts, though - which I've by now played and finished - ISN'T trying to be Pokémon, but very much its own thing. The similarities essentially stop at 'collectible monsters' - everything from how the monster-catching is handled, how you level up, how monsters get stronger, how items work, how you explore the world... it's all clearly distinct, and shows that the developers were trying to make a cool game about collecting monsters, not Pokémon: Steam Edition.
Nexomon also has a bunch of mobile ports
My man- Nexomon and Coromon aren't THAT much shit, jeez. I played Nexomon myself and loved it! G'jeez.
As someone who is a huge Coromon fan i disagree. Is it inspired by pokemon yes, but calling it a rip-off is just rude to devs who put a lot of time and effort into it.
I suspect that in three years this guy will be a quite popular UA-camr and this video will be one of his early works of the sort he talks about here.
1:35 LIMBUS COMPANY!
HOLY SHIT LIMBUS COMPANY MENTIONED
Im extremely happy this game gets recognition cuz it deserves it
LIMBUSSSS COMPANY!!! 1:35
I informed myself and i played it trough now i am erasing all my memories except i am keeping my knowledge of the beasts how they evolve so that i can enjoy it again
It's really a clear breath of fresh air
Would you say that this game is... MORE THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS!
Great video!
Personally, I definitely prefer Pokemon because it's about catching your favorites, becoming a strong trainer, etc. There's no real "threat" and you're kind of a kid who just ends up helping in most of the games.
Also, the fusion aspect of this game (and becoming one of the monsters) was already done by Digimon. People really sleep on Digimon games.
If anything, this game reminds me more of Digimon since it involves people being sucked into another world and there's monsters.
It's the same old story is such a banger, that song sold me the game
It borrows from Pokemon, as most monster collectors do, but I think Cassette beasts takes more from games like Xenoblade and Persona than it does from Pokemon. It's a decent little game, though, and definitely has its own flavor. 8/10 IMO
The funny thing is that when I first saw this game, the first thing I though of actually wasn't pokémon, but Digital Devil Saga. I put it on my wishlist while I debated buying it, and I think this video helped me make my final decision.
this game is THE best monster colector on steam you need it!
I can't remember where I saw this first, but saw that it had the Fusion mechanic and was pretty interested (espeically since a certain fan game has taken over the internet rn.) This game does something that I feel a lot of monster catching games right now fail to do one crucial point: make the monster designs interesting. Everyone thinks that Pokemon is just an animal with an element attached to it, which is only some of them. But people take that mindset for their own games, and make the monsters just so uninteresting. It's why I dropped Monster Sanctuary. The designs didn't follow that pattern, but were still pretty generic.
From what I've seen, the designs look interesting! That bat with the microphone is really cute and that skeleton boss gets me super excited becuase I love the multimedia angle! If i'm playing a monster catcher RPG, I wanna see interesting designs. Digimon goes pretry damn extra with the desgins, and SMT/Persona has fantastic interpritations of Mythological beings. Point is, someone finally make an Pokemon-like indie game with interesting designs!
Which indie game are you talking about btw?
I would like to recommend nexomon. Both it and the sequel are awesome monster taming games
It’s not a clone, its a massive step-up. Love the fact that recording a monster prevents it from being accidentally KO’ed as you try to reduce its HP without bringing it to 0. A quality of life improvement.
It saddens me seeing pokemon being an annualized franchise, the foundation that makes GameFreak developers crunch so hard that they’re approaching breaking point (see GireumRed videos, no links bc youtube anti-spam), modern pokemon games is facing devoid of content, reused assets (sun and moon’s building interiors is one example) useful features removed (dexit), and their most recent 2 pairs of main games (excluding spinoffs like Legends Arceus), a remake, BDSP, and a new game (pokemon’s first open world) SV, suffered glitches.
Calling it a clone is an understatement.
When you started talking about One Piece I was like “oh this kind of reminds me of Oppenheimer! … wait maybe we don’t need to love EVERYTHING we make”
Cassette Beasts feels more like a persona game than a pokemon game
Felix is definitely my favorite out of all the companions in this game. Its probably because i myself am an artist.
Wow this is so interesting. Almost like a Pokémon and Persona/SMT hybrid
Another game to play while I procrastinate on work 😔
REAL
I'm happy to see someone else talking about this game. I absolutely love it and there's just so much to love about it. From the creatures, the characters, the music... I could go on. It is so much more then just a pokemon clone (which it isn't) and I'd recommend anyone to go play it
11:08 I despised hearing that because it sounds like such toxic positivity to me. "Don't hate your works because you have nothing to be ashamed of!" kind of stuff, which, is true but I should be allowed to dislike something I may create. I will acknowledge that it helped me but that may not make me "love it". This sentence just rubbed me in a disgusting way, I had to get that off my chest... sorry.
I wish you'd show more creature designs. You shown the same 4-5 designs throughout most of the video, and it's got me scratching my head
Sorry I didn't want to show too many to not rob the joy of discovery from anyone who was going to check the game out. I guess I should have showed a couple more
Nice Detailed Overview. You may like to cover games like Kynseed, Sun Haven, Coral Island, or Moonstone Island that are still adding content so they could benefit from that detail rather than just a review.
Ait you've cooked here. I'm sold. Going to get the game rn. Fun video too btw. Very chill and relaxing. Keep up the good work my nigga
This game is Amazing. My favorite game of 2023
Been playing this since it popped up on gamepass & it's been great. I've never been a fan of Pokemon even though I've played a few & tried to get into it. I just hit level 100 and I need 5 more recordings. This is a great game, I just wish there was a physical cart for switch that I could buy 🤷♂️
now imagine if Pokemon company implement Trainer transform into pokemon.
That would be a spinoff at this point. I am sure you know the dangers of changing the genre of a main series, right?
@@jirehtheprovider make sense. they might do a experimental on that
I wouldn't mind a spinoff in the Réburst universe

Kinda annoys me that this video insults pokemon more than complementing this game, but other than that cool video
I’ve noticed this with quite a few videos talking about games that do “Pokémon but better.”

WE ARE ENTERING IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF INDIE GAMES!!! MY GODD JUST LOOK AT BALDURS GATE 3 AND THIS GAME
Baldurs hate isn't an indie game in the slightest, it's made by a large and well known studio
so it's a metroidvania that's partly open world and it's a creature collector?
Neat.
Kind of
THE GOAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It kind of reminds me of Magi Kingdom with atleast some of what this game does.
this game is a beast!!!
Wouldn't it be closer to a persona or smt clone?
It is more like smt than it is pokemon, but it is more common(for me at least) to see games like this compared to pokemon because of how massive and well known of a franchise it is. But yeah you probs right
Sadly considering everyone who hails pokemon black and white would've literally loved smt4 if they knew it existed.
I love this game
Just wish the monster designs were better. It’s kinda hard to get into the game when not a single design makes me excited to want to capture. And the over world looks like something whipped up in an RPG maker in a day or two.
Competitive cassette beasts would be more interesting than competitive Pokemon.
Ngl lanthe and her/his girlfriend littary are a good team her/his girlfriend is a supporter while lanthe is a attacker and tank
I honestly never thought of Pokémon when I first saw Cassette Beasts, but I honestly can’t find myself being interested in it. It just doesn’t seem to be my type of game unfortunately.
That's totally fair, different people have different preferences and vibe with different types of games
That's it, on the wishlist you go.
I semi joke that this is a G1 soundwave from transformers simulator
Found this game 2 days ago. Ran into a Djin Antonic. Been my lead since. This game honestly makes me hopeful it will pick up and be the next big catch ‘em type game cause Pokémon’s dropped the ball hard in recent years and digimon games just always miss the mark and end up being boring and rushed
You pronounce Arceus the correct way, imo.
Yeah that's how I've heard it, but I've met some people who will die on the hill that's its like arSeus
@@ConnorRascal Hey! I'll be that guy! so *cough here I go..
If the original Japanese names are to be considered, because ya know, it's a Japanese game, then it is arSeus, [アルセウス] a-ru-SE-u-su. The [セ] is pronounced SE, not K. The english version being VERY similar (Arceus), doesn't really help your case my guy 😆.
Nobody would argue about, for example "Gardevoir" since the original japanese name is very different. Gardevoir IS its own english name, but that's not the case with Arceus you know.
Cassette beast is not a Pokémon clone it’s a chaotic clone
Yeah, that sounds more accurate, they were scanning creatures in Chaotic, not catching them
… How did I not realize that at first? O_O
Damn, you just made me way more interested in this game.
This game looks really good!
No "pokémon clone" is "just another pokémon clone". Not even Temtem, even if their goal was clearly a literal "let's do Pokémon but better thought out for competitive play"
That said, I am definitely getting Cassette Beasts as soon as I save up a little!
My problem with TemTem and some other monster catching games are that the monster designs themselves aren't all that interesting. It feels like a lot of them just go with the "animal but with an element approach" and it turns out pretty bland. It's why I dropped Monster Sanctuary. Even though the game was mechanically really solid, none of the designs felt interesting to me
@@MythicMachina exactly
Honestly just the whole concept of calling cassette beasts a Pokémon clone just because it has mon collecting as a concept just rubs me the wrong way because Pokémon didn't invent the concept. Even in terms of video games megami tensei did it first. And while cassette beasts takes obvious inspiration from pokemon it also takes inspiration from:
kamen rider,
steven universe,
madoka magica,
shakespheare,
Grant Morrisons various comics,
what if the Beatles never broke up (yes that's a story and yes they confirmed they used it as inspiration in an AMA)
and various myths and folklore.
There is no such thin as fully original ideas and that's fine.
Anyway cassette beasts kicks ass, I love the setting, characters, monsters, combat systems, exploration and soundtrack to pieces my only major complaint is that I just want more
Thanks for making me want this game lmao
I’m sorry “New Wirral”? 😭 that’s… there’s a place called the Wirral in England, near Liverpool where I live… surely the names are a coincidence…
I think the name was a reference to some piece of literature, but I'm not sure so don't take my word on that
oh no, the ones who grew up on gen 5 are old enough to make UA-cam videos now
Yeppp
Digital devil saga meets Pokémon
I think ive found the next game im gonna try out
Have you tried Monster Hunter Stories? This battle system feels a lot like that.
I haven't, I'll check it out!
There are two games in the series so far, one on the 3ds and one on steam. Both are fun, but it is not fully needed to play both to enjoy them.
How do you figure? MH Stories' Battle System is vastly different from this. For one, you have limited control over your monster's actions, unless you're riding them. However, you can predict what your monster is going to do because every monster has a certain personality and focuses on certain types of attacks. Which leads to the next point. You choose between three attacks: Power, Speed, and Technical. It works in a triangle system, Power beats Technical, Technical beats Speed and Speed beats Power. This comes into play when two monsters attack each other and basically go head-to-head, they deal damage to each other, but the monster that wins the clash does significantly more damage and fills the Kinship gauge.
There's alot more to this than that, but you can see that it vastly different from this game.
GO PLAY LENNA'S INCEPTION
-really I did not know this thing was out-
Is Soundwave the main antagonist?
Yeah it's really annoying how people say Digimon is a clone it literally makes no sense it's not even similar to Pokemon but they aren't wrong that it's a clone by cyclone of tamagotchi
The monsters look nice, but not a fan of the human sprites
I don't mind
I think it's like whir-all like world with a British accent.

Why though

There's no such thing as a clone. That sides with the corporation. Use the phrase that sides with the people instead. It's competition.
Sometimes they are a clone. Cassette beasts thankfully isn't one
@@chronodis competition is epic. cuz then we win. look at GTA. they have no competition, so they get to do whatever they want, and we lose. competition makes companies have to keep improving to grab our attention
