    Lucky, you guys are so lucky to get to work on such solid cars. Over here on the east coast that thing would need a crap load of rust repair before you could ever think of driving it. Glad to see you put your magic touch on it and gave it another chance at life.

    It's a '65. '64 still had the t handle latch for the engine lid. This one doesn't l. '66 has a center dash vent for defrost. This one doesn't.

    if the car is still there. please follow the steel line to the fuel pump inlet forward.. where it goes thru the sheetmetal. look in with a flashlight .. its on the left side of the engine bay. there should be a grommet where the steel line passes thru the sheet metal. that grommet is almost always gone. the fix is easy. split 2 inches of 1/4" fuel hose and place it around the fuel line and push it half way thru the sheetmetal then a single small hose clamp to keep it in place... so many bugs have burned up because the sheet metal cuts a groove in the fuel line and it drips gasoline directly on the exhaust pipe coming out of the head. this is a 3 minute fix. don't push more than an inch thru the hole.. or you will push the fuel hose off the end of the line above the axle.

      wayne p That is a cool piece of trivia and explains what happened across the street. Guy did some driveway halfassed resto on an old bug for his daughter. It caught fire and I never heard what happened but I'd say you probably nailed it.

      they will also crack at freeway speeds. Engines are best below 50mph

      The VW engine was designed to be able to run at maximum revs (4400rpm@70mph) all day long and do 100,000 miles between rebuilds...you are talking nonsense.

      That's why VW bugs were accepted in the USA while contemporary cars from England and France weren't, they couldn't handle the Freeways or wide open spaces out west. Something to say about countries who didn't improve their roads and taxed the heck out of engine displacement, and that was they weren't going to be successful in the New World without special export models.

    • @Lazarus19706
      @Lazarus19706 7 років тому +4

      I could see that. When they first opened the M1 motorway here in the UK, cars broke down all over the place because they couldn't handle driving at relatively high speeds for long periods of time.

    It's 40 horse and that's it. I had a '61 and it had 40. The older ones had 36, but I don't remember what year the change was. 1967 was the 'big' change with the new 53 horse engine and those things were fun to drive. I rented one and drove it to Frisco one night, what a gas :--))))))))))))))))))))))

  • @lewismocaby3646
    @lewismocaby3646 3 роки тому

    It is all about the hot rods and the good times...or at least I think it should be. That little 1600 cc engine could easily go 1900 cc with dual Webber’s and a stinger pipe or at least a stealthy header. Because 2100 to 2300 cc’s are doable but it’s a lotta work and transaxles get expensive.

    Although he did all the work and he is finished now because it was 3 years ago but I came up with a thought watching a video which the guy was right is if your front clip is squished but your reservoir area for your break canister is not crushed at all try to use as much as the original metal German metal as possible so when you get your front clip cut the front clip all up and use only what you need this way it's more original
