    I just started my first ever garden with my wife and I showed her this video for inspiration. We have 4 beds in the backyard with okra, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, turnips, peppers, etc…

    It’s gonna be a hell of an arc watching this turn into a gardening channel. 10 years, old man Styx the hippy gardening dude. Doing ad reads for fertilisers. It will be wholesome, good viewing.

    Looks great and I like the brick edging. I feel so sorry for gardeners in the northeast. Such a short time to do it all. I’ve already pulled my onions, harvested some zucchini, dug potatoes and I picked my first tomato. I am so jealous of your biochar.

    Styx - it's not too late to sow another lot of beets if you're not happy with what you have. Try sowing the seed in a container somewhere protected from wind etc, in a plastic bag, or a bit of cling wrap over to raise the humidity. Great garden 👍

  • @peregrination3643
    @peregrination3643 26 днів тому

    My zucchini was under a clear tarp because of squirrels. Now the leaves are massive. Added a 5th bed, 6 if you count the haphazard one that's mostly horse manure that we put some pumpkin seeds into.

    Looking good!! As for the bunnies, I use cayenne pepper. Sprinkle the plants in the early morning when there is some dew. One bite and they are off and running! I do let a patch of clover growing so they can eat that instead.

    Just maintaining my perennials right now. Fucking apt living. Still, the little coffee is doing well in the window. Lost the Tea Plant though. The Red Gooseberry even bloomed in it's little pot and the yellow raspberry is doing great. Not sure about the blackberry, there is still some green on one cane at the bottom. My wife's snowball bush is blooming too. The butterfly bushes are slow coming out but showing new growth. The irises are hanging in there. We had to leave so much behind. Every little bit brings joy.

    You won't have to stop gardening as you get older. Just use raised beds. I got a very late start this year but fortunately here in central Louisiana we have a long growing season. Although there was a hailstorm on Mother's Day. Lasted all of five minutes but it came down hard with pea sized hail and destroyed many gardens. But like I said I did get a late start so all of my seedlings which are currently in trays will be fine barring any other freakish weather.

    Just a hint, With the plants in the grass, make the beds square about 15" and just use the mower to trim around. Blow the grass into the plants to form a mulch. The same for the regular beds blow the grass onto the beds to rot between the cuttings. For context 1" of grass clippings will go away into the soil in two weeks if the soil is moist and fertile. Don't worry about it pulling N2 from the upper layer. It is when you add more than two inches and let it mat that it becomes a problem. In the fall mulch the beds with a mix of grass and leaves and let the worms eat it over the winter. In spring just separate the mulch about 4" from the seedlings. Find a neighbor who has chickens and especially if the bed in wood shavings and use that as a thin top dressing. Not more than 1" thick and no closer than 4" from the plant stem.

    Wanted to thank you for talking about azomite in an earlier video. My strawberries are amazing this year because of it. My garden has what yours does, except okra. That's for sure survival food. Got lots of cool oriental greens for stir fry too, my friend participates in a seed exchange, they're really pretty besides being edible. If you have time, try some broccoli raab, it's working better than broccoli where I am because it's a single stalk, so I can harvest before it bolts.

    AWSOME. Gorgeous. I live in Texas and my lettuce has died. But I experimented with potatoes. I had some that were growing eyes so I quartered them and planted them and I got a bumper crop. Also green onion did well.
