Calculating Deadlines without Software / A cautionary tale about losing what you aren't using

- This might ruffle some feathers, but here's the thing. I do not use software to pre-calculate deadlines for me. In fact, I believe that consistently using software that pre-calculates deadlines are not only detrimental to the long-term success of a thriving Paralegal Boss, but it hinders the muscle memory you'll count upon later in your career. As legal professionals, we're required to know the deadlines and rules of the jurisdictions we practice in. If you leave a firm that uses software like this, will you be able to calculate deadlines without it? If you think you'll have trouble, what will you rely on going forward? We all need tools to succeed. When and how we use those tools makes all the difference. Of course, this is just my opinion.

This was an interesting one. I currently manually calendar my deadlines via Microsoft Office. I can see the pros and cons of relying on a software, versus looking up deadlines each time (until they are engraved in your brain), or having a cheatsheet as you recommend. One thing I also do, is create microsoft excel spreadsheets to quickly calculate deadlines for me, ie. a motion deadline calculator. it is a very useful tool, when trying to calculate various deadlines, to gauge an outcome, so your attorney can make a final on on requesting a hearing date, based on when papers will be ready for service.
Excellent idea with your excel spreadsheet. Sounds like you are quite the Paralegal Boss achieving great things in this crazy legal industry. Keep up the good work and spread that great wealth of knowledge. Our future Paralegal industry needs you! Thank you for watching and commenting. I certainly appreciate you! 😊
I needed this so badly!!! You're a boss!
Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate you!
Deadlines to respond are only one part of calendaring. The filing of a document could also trigger a long list of seemingly unrelated deadlines as i have learned looking at Compulaw reports. How does one remember any and all dates triggered by any given event, whether that triggering event be a filing, a hearing, a mandatory settlement conference, or the setting of a trial date?
Where should I ask you a question, can I get your email address
