Open City: Japanese Invasion of the Philippines 1941 - Part 5

  • In late December 1941, following the failure of MacArthur's gamble to hold the Japanese invaders at the beaches, the fate of the Philippines seemed sealed. As the Japanese successfully stormed the shores of Lingayen Gulf and Lamon Bay, splitting Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines, in half, MacArthur had no other alternative but to order his troops to withdraw to the Bataan peninsula, where he planned to make a last stand and at the same time he decided to abandon all efforts to defend Manila declared it an open city, to save the capital from destruction and to minimise civilian casualties.

I read Day of Deceit by Robert Stinnett. You should read the message FDR/Navy sent to McArthur to let the Japanese hit US bases, even though McArthur's listening stations had every chance to sink Japanese warships carrying J troops with US subs in the area. All our American and Filipino allies died due to FDR's insistence to follow MccCollum's 8 Point Memo.

@@luigivincenz3843 thanks. I may have to get hold of this book to get a full understanding. Based on my web search so far, the memo refers to provoking Japan to attack USA. Are there other books or literatures that will confirm?

And let's never forget Bataan. Allied soldiers were forced to walk many miles on foot alongside Japanese soldiers ... also on foot. Being Americans, they should have been given bus service! Oh, and lets not forget how they attacked the wives and children of those soldiers, carpet-bombing and firebombing American and Australian cities. Oh wait, no they didn't. That's what the Allies did to the wives and children of Japanese soldiers. Hmm...

I did three foreign service tours in Manila as a printing specialist 1983-87, 90-95 and 99-2001 managing the US Information Agency printing center which was established there in 1950 shortly after the war and visited many of the locations mentioned in the video and also stayed at the Ambassador’s residence at Camp John Hay were the surrender if the Philippines back to the Americans was signed. I also had a chance to visit Corregidor several times and the MacArthur suite at the Manila Hotel where he lived before the war, which while I was there on my first assignment was taken over by rebel soldiers trying to overthrow Cora Aquino after the ouster of Marcos by the People Power Revolution. During my second tour there the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo
forced the evacuation of Clark and the decision of the US to pull out of Subic due to lack of support by the Philippine government at the time.
This is the best explanation of the WWII occupation and retreat I’ve seen.

I’m midway through video but I heard of a several old abandoned Japanese bunkers just south of general santos city but only one is visible; rest were either destroyed or completely buried. Not sure if any fighting happened there though.

Japan's leaders made very bad decisions just right before WWll began. One of them was the choice they made when they picked Hitler as their ally. Who could forget the bombing of Pearl Harbor, a deadly provocation that led to the US all-out involvement in the war. They'd underestimated and miscalculated many things throughout the conflict. Among them was the courage and determination of every Filipino who fought alongside the Americans.

They didn't fight the Pinoys, fought the American colonists and the puppets serving the colonizers. They they were there to liberate the Phillipine from western colonizers. That day, had Pinoys not fight the Japanese on the American behalf, a lot of death and suffering could have been avoided.

Americans did not colonize the Philippines, no colonies were built, only military bases. Also, the American government offered the Philippines independence twice, in 1912 and in 1933. The Filipinos turned it down.

This is the US propaganda movie. Japan didn’t invade Philippines, but liberated it from the US who betrayed it after a war against Spain and colonized, after Pearl Harbor attack. Then Philippine got independent in 1943 without the US.
