I am a white woman, and feel your pain and was made to carry my suitcase to the labour ward whist 7cm dilated I had to stop in the corridor whilst having contractions!! I was also given sedatives by a horrid midwife and told to go to sleep as I was not in labour!! My first baby was born a couple of hours later, I told her I was in labour and didn't feel right. She stuck her hand in me and said oh yeah your 7 cms....haunts me to this day!

This is not Racism, but a need to understand what multiple health problems there are in *any* women who is pregnant.
Why it's a very easy question to answer. Because the maternity service doesn't provide individualized care for Black mothers. They would rather cover themselves and lump all black women into a bracket. The biased treatment and medical racism are extensive and extreme. slim to none representation and I don't mean Asian or minority doctors that are representing Asian women or minorities but Black female and male practitioners. Unless you are informed to high levels and educate yourself often find yourself being manipulated into and harassed into doing what they want at the risk of self and baby regardless of your instincts and intuition. The NHS is a great ideal but the reality is underfunded and disorganized where mistakes and bad practices are not acknowledged or correct but brushed under the carpet. I hope this changes for future generations but I fear not.
My experience was normal no racism I think that it depends upon where you live I think we have to be very careful here playing the race card will have a negative impact on patients all midwives if they are from the UK are brought up in a mixed society and more aware nowadays of cultural differences so midwives are not racist. I have given birth to 2 children in the UK, and can honestly say if you feel you aren't treated well, it is because resources are scarce, and staff are stretched (one midwife to 3-6 birthing mothers in my case). I don't think it has anything to do with the colour of my skin. When I needed an emergency caesarian, all hands on deck, and I got great care

It's connected to a weight factor which has a health factor that impacts the safety of the delivery, this has nothing to do with race and everything to do with weight which impact weight, physical health and pregnancy survival rates.
Let me talk from my experiences. We keep a stiff upper lip. "They wont hear me crying," "they're not going to see that I'm in extreme pain." "I will hold out to the bitter end. One negative comment during labour and that was it. It became me and my baby vs them. The comment was you push this baby out or I will use a forcept. Delivery had not started yet and this is what the doctor said to me. In another situation the nurse in the room said to me, "Dont touch me" when I reached out to her during labour. Well it became "me and my other baby vs them again". In all situations regardless of colour as a person you will choose side. With blacks we choose side very quickly because of life's experiences. Even if we dont mean to. Self preservation. Instinct. Another thing: 1. injuries cannot be seen easily on our skin 2. we have higher than normal pain threshold therefore we are more likely to be overlooked(not taken seriously) hence higher death rates, permanent injuries, etc.
