I can't believe I wasted 13 minutes of my Saturday watching someone wash a cable and a power strip, I think with all the chemicals used I would have bought 4 new ones.

Have you considered that maybe its a hobby he enjoys and love to share it with others? Yes true, he could have buy new ones but if you enjoy cleaning old ones and fix them if you can its an awsume feeling. There is nothing wrong with that.
