    So the owner of this device got very pissed at me for posting this video so much that he asked me to ship the device back to him.
    Accused me of being a liar for claiming that SVOD can repair batteries.
    I am pretty sure that i never said it can repair battery. All i was able to get out of it was read the data, thats all. Unlocking the battery was the only way to fix the battery in this video and if i had the commands and address to send to the chip via SVOD, in theory it would work but i cant say 100% unless someone can tell me what commands and to what address i need to send those codes.
    Either way, the battery analyzer goes back the way it came. I guess am not good enough to keep it.
    Who cares 🙂

      Thats quite the over reaction, I mean its just a device that resets old batteries, one thats very expensive for what it does so I guess hes very protective of his limited market.

      @northwestrepair  8 годин тому +2

      @@Borked1000 Indeed so. His market is very limited.
      If he wanted to get his device in the hands of solo repair guys like me, he would have to change his terms of sale in exchange for a global marketplace.
      i think $200 USD would be reasonable given the fact that it has only 2 advantages over SVOD4.
      It can balance cells and unlock process is much much easier. Everything else is just convenience rather than functionality.

      @@Hossimo i think so too. i am not sure what he so mad about.
      Maybe language or a culture barrier ?
      he is Romanian from what i can tell. I worked with his people many years ago hand to hand doing hardwood floors, i know they think they are the best in the world somehow and thats basically is the vibe i get in every email how great and unique his tool is.
      Well, SVOD exists for a while so its not so unique i guess.
      Either way, i asked if he gonna let me keep it if i pay for it. I still want a toy to play with once in a while even if he takes my unlimited unlock license away and just grants me with a standard 10 unlocks per year. Ill be fine with that.

    We're in Europe and use the NLBA1. Great thing. We're not bothered to get the subscription to reset the chip on a locked battery. We throw them away as well, because at the end of the day that makes us more money than resetting the chip, get some money for our service and sending it to the creator for the subscription.
    I made a board with serveal connectors on it with pin headers connector to them. For me that's the quickest way to connect the battery to the analyzer.

      @ It's manual work on an perfboard with about 10 connectors from dead laptops, connected to a pin header.
      I've got some dupont jumper leads between the green connector on the NLBA1 and the pin headers. some extra for power and some extra for ground/system present.
      This way I never had to use the odd connectors they supplied with it.
      I think a designed pcb would be way better, so I hope Tony will go on and make something. I'd buy it if he doesn't share it for free.

  • @liminalsunset
    @liminalsunset 6 годин тому +1

    The real important question here is HOW the NLBA1 has a database of the Unseal Codes for every different manufacturer's batteries. It is well known the procedure to communicate with the smart battery using Arduino or other cheap devices. However, the manufacturer often changes the Unseal code. Either this software has a lookup table for batteries, or they are brute forcing the code somehow maybe (unsure how long this would take or if feasible). It would be interesting for someone who have this device to connect a SMBus Sniffer/logger and then plug in some "unknown" battery and then ask the support to unlock it, or just sniff the unseal key of various batteries and chips. However I generally do agree that in the West, people rarely spend time repairing batteries. Unlocking the Permanent Fail is, IMO, useful, but is a good chance the battery will have a low capacity. I personally usually try to find a open box or used OEM genuine battery on eBay wherever possible, because that way the capacity is known good, and for most common laptops the price is about $30.

    • @northwestrepair
      @northwestrepair  2 години тому +1

      He told me he has people working on these codes and using some algorithms to crack them.
      I think he is not telling the whole truth here and possibly using AI to brute force the access codes.
      The firmware it's self is very small. It can be done rather quickly explaining why he was able to crack my battery in seconds.
      I wish I knew more about this process so I could automate the process until code is found but I don't.

    • @northwestrepair
      @northwestrepair  2 години тому

      I learned today that manufacturers set the lock code to what they want. Just need to find one that works.
      Since it took him seconds to unlock the newly unsupported battery, I think Asus is using common codes across many generations.
      I was also thinking about the sniffer to see what his device is doing while unlocking the battery so I could replicate it on SVOD but I am not smart enough to do that and I don't have time.

    • @liminalsunset
      @liminalsunset 2 години тому

      @@northwestrepair Just looked into this again, apparently the process to unlock the batteries is quite involved, newer MacBook batteries have a completely different firmware and it's uncertain how they managed to reverse engineer the process involving hundreds of commands, and to be quite honest it probably is quite an involved process in general. The price of the software is probably reasonable, considering the amount of faff that went into developing it, but it's too expensive for anyone except the factories that remanufacture these batteries. I wish they had a single unlocking option, maybe $15 or so for one battery.

New batteries have low internal resistance, after some using they degrade and resistance going up. Higher resistance higher woltage drops on the load and lower currents you can get from battery.

    Laptop manufacturers:
    -We will create the same battery, but with reversed pins... and maybe lets make different connectors for similar models, because even if they do the same work, we should make like 20 variants of it, so we can charge more for laptops because we overcomplicated it, instead of using the same parts in every our models to save money and make repairs easier.
    -How about we make chips that will lock perfectly good batteries if user will discharge it completely so they will need to buy new one from us?

    Tony, for me there is no point to compare SVOD and NLBA. They are made for different purposes. SVOD is probably the best programmer out there for EC programming (among others) while NLBA is likely the only solution for battery diagnostics. It's apples and oranges. NLBA is a very expensive tool both in acquiring and buying the license and makes sense for a big shop and mostly in poor countries (in EU we have many and there are more to come as the economy worsens) or if you are Sorin and want to make some more money by advertising a product being made in your mother country. SVOD is the best tool for programming EC almost any EC being used or will be used and it's pricing makes it perfect for pros and amateurs as well and it doesn't require any subscription (hopefully it will stay like that). Now the fact that SVOD supports almost any protocol related to EEPRON/FLASH out there and therefore can read the flash of the battery management IC, doesn't put it in the same category as NLBA, not even close.

    • @northwestrepair
      @northwestrepair  7 годин тому

      I agree. How ever the main issue is unlocking the chip. SVOD can unlock it i just need to know the address and the commands to send. There is no user forum or support from SVOD developer in this regard as far as i know. Maybe there is on telegram, not sure. But NLBA1 has great customer service and unlocking is available almost instantly.
      I also agree that SVOD and NLBA are two different animals and cannot be compared directly with one another but.....battery repair is 90% behind unlocking the chip.
      Both can unlock it, SVOD just makes it a lot harder for some reasons so for that, i think the comparison was fair.

  • @Skungalunga
    @Skungalunga 13 годин тому

    Didn't even know there was a general purpose tool for this application. Sadly the price of the NLBA1 only makes this suitable for high volume applications or high paying industrial repair applications. I'm not saying it is not worth the price. But for jokers like me, I just don't have the volume, or time to offset the price of shipping a new battery from the US or China.
