I was in the studio with producer Antonio Catania (Scatman John, Milli Vanilli) a few years back and he stopped the recording and just looked at me. He said, "How do you sing so high?" I replied, "Because I want to." Which of course, isn't the real reason; the real reason is because I have a narrow throat and a big set of lungs. As an instrument, I'm simply built for high notes. I couldn't sing a bass note to save my life. The point is, singing with your own voice is what's important, be it high or low. If someone asked me for singing advice, I would tell them, "Just be interesting." Johnny Cash had no range. Tom Waites has no range. Louis Armstrong had no range. But they were some of the most successful singers in history. Notes are just notes. It's what they mean to people that matters. My two cents.
Great video, I think that's exactly what I discovered this week while I record myself on a cover I worked on, and this feeling is a kind of effortless one, just release some muscles to land on this register, you can even balance the voice weight and resonance to aim for the result you want, but easy on it because at first it sounds bad or tight if you do it the wrong way, and you can get a blown voice so be careful about the air pressure this is a point too, it's not that easy to explain, but I think I got it too, thank you for posting videos :)
Great tip. From another youtuber I learnt that mix is really the only good approach, so suddenly my singing approach has changed dramatically. I was pushing my chest voice with a tight jaw and tight throat and basically yelling, but now I'm really focused on using the upper register and blend with it. My tips would be: 1. Get used to your voice transitioning from chest to head/falsetto seemingly ...by using siren Lip bubbles and Rrrrrrrr-ing 2. Now try to achieve similar with your voice with a simple wovel like Ah or Uh.. The "attack" or approach should feel very similar to falsetto approach, but not the same I guess 3. Be very gentle and as the man here said.. you have to let go of some part of your voice Once mastered, you can play with connecting more or less chestiness to the sound I guess, and also by doing this, I believe you'll be naturally able to even sing a bit higher with the chest register. I imagine so anyway... :)
Anyway, I think this helped me, just sharing my breakthrough, but of course I'm not really sure how correct/good I am as well as my singing is, but I'm somewhat content at the moment. Damn, I really want to learn how to add distortion/raspiness so bad!
Actually, you have some very good ideas! I agree with a lot of what you said and you've obviously been studying this. My book and video may really help you. Here you go just in case! Book, please. I love that you got right into it. This is so interesting. I did NOT know there was a second bridge. I would certainly love to be able to extend my range!
Hey, thanks for your kind word and for asking for My Fearless Singing book and bonuses (THF High Note Video). Here's the link for you! Think of the first bridge like shifting your car in to second gear and your second bridge like shifting your car into 3rd gear. And there are more bridges as you go up the scale about every augmented forth. www.innersingerhub.com/fsoptin Thanks again!
Book, please. I live in Europe, and we still have most cars with manual gear. My modest car has 5. It says on the knob in which direction to find all of these. But you cannot access that if you do not first push the clutch pedal. The handling of the clutch in combination with the gas pedal is in practice the hardest part in learning to drive a car. In my voice I know where the gas pedal is, but not how to use the clutch. So for me the knowledge of more bridges equates to your example of being told to thin it. By the way, I am just a wannabe amateur, probably less competent than any of your students :-). So, no criticism, just a question.

Maybe mix is common now, but I watched now dozens of vids and I still do not understand what people are taking about. I can't afford lessons so I yet try to figure that out on my own.
Pro coach here. It's not your fault. It's because most coaches don't have a solid background in physiology so they don't (can't) explain it to you. So like you said, everyone talks about it, but no one explains it. Like this video yet again doesn't explain it for you.
Do you know a singer who is known as a strong dramatic contralto, but she can also sing with an angelic voice like a lyric soprano, reaching the note G#6!?
Hey there! Do you mean counter tension or counter tenor? Two of my favorites for tension are humming and the squeaky door exercise. Humming has a ton of new research and a multitude of actual health benefits and the squeaky door is a great tension releaser. My THF System high note video will have some things that may help you and it's free with my free Fearless Singing book. Here ya go if you'd like to try it. Thanks! and good luck! www.innersingerhub.com/fsoptin

Thank you very much for your precius video i don’t undestend very well but use traslator in italian. You help me to sing better high notes in a few time. Thank you again.
Mike, this is good information. However, I am still protesting your “Coolest Dad Ever” plaque - I need to see empirical evidence of this claim. Great advice for the voice though!

What about people like Brendon Urie (5 octave range) or Ariana Grande (whistle notes)? Are there more/other bridges to cross?
Great question! Yes, there's a bridge as high as you can go. As a generalization about every augmented forth.
Do you know a singer who is known as a strong dramatic contralto, but she can also sing with an angelic voice like a lyric soprano, reaching the note G#6!?
I don't but I'd bet there probably is one somewhere!
Hi Mike, do you have any "counter-tension" excercises? All the best from Denmark
Hey there! Do you mean counter tension or counter tenor? Two of my favorites for tension are humming and the squeaky door exercise. @@MikeGoodrich Thank you! Haha, yes, I meant counter tension, as I tend to tense my swallowing muscles etc when singing...

Happy to hear that! Thank you!
yeah i didn't even know there was a first bridge. i thought the end of 'chest' was your limit and too bad for you if its at d4 or lower.
Haha...no, there's a lot of room up there!😀
Mike, this is good information. However, I am still protesting your “Coolest Dad Ever” plaque - I need to see empirical evidence of this claim. Great advice for the voice though!
