Used to love playing with them as a kid, great bug, maybe the best for that. Thats a very good timelapse you did, I would love to see the full color change though
It's crickets until the video switches to outside in daytime. Then besides the birds the sound is these cicadas. Regular summer cicadas sound similar, but is more pulsing mechanical buzz. These are a constant loud shimmering at pretty much a single pitch, almost like a ringing in your ears.
I have one on a twig in a bottle. He or she has stopped climbing, I assume the metemorphosis is eminent. Time is eleven thirty AM, I have to leave for a few hours, I do not know what to expect when I get back.
It's not 17 years we have them every year in SEA. Lots of protein we hunt them at night in the forest. Really tasty to fry before they have wings. After wings still tasty but not so much.
That's not a "hatch", that's a "plague"! ;) Fabulous footage! It appears that you have the smaller red-eyed variety there in Virginia. (animals and people prefer eating those...) Once every 3 to 5 years, in rotation, we will have a hatching of those small, red eyed cicada in May/June, but on a regular basis (July/August), ours are the larger green/gray variety here in Alabama. My Jack Russel calls them "July snacks" :) . You have a good camera. I tried to record one molting, but my old camera didn't do it much justice.
Lol a long time ago my friends mom or aunt helped a cicada that couldn't fly because one of its wings were damaged so she helped it fly again I forgot how tho
Great video - wish I had the time to do something like this. Was up on Breakneck Ridge Trail near Cold Spring, NY today and a bunch were flying up the hill, landing in trees. Didn't know they flew. I thought they just emerged and crawled up the tree they were sucking on for 17 years. I never seemed to be in the midst of where they were making all the racket - it was always coming from somewhere else. Where were you in 1996? What have all these Cicadas missed in that time. UA-cam is new to them.
AP CO they show up every Summer, especially in hot climate countries like Vietnam, you can hear they scream in every where that have trees, to be honest its a bit annoying
@@TanNguyen-xn6mp the 17 year, or periodical cicada, only emerge every 17 years. There are also 13 year broods. They are similar to the "annual" cicada, but they are completely different broods.
I have been watching this process in my backyard but didn’t have the time to sit there all day and watch them hatch and turn brown and fly. For a minute there I thought I was in my own backyard because my Jack Russell keeps hunting them on the Iris leaves.
Fascinating creatures! I remember I spent many hours as a kid collecting cicadas, and then dumping them at the bottom of a tree to have a race of sorts. They always struck me as alien in nature due to their mechanical sounding drone and organized invasion.
Yeah, I know my Pokemon. Also, when they grow up, they become Ninjask, but in the Pokemon World, their discarded shells become Pokemon themselves. They're called Shedinjas, and they don't seem to do very much being discarded shells. However, in the game it says that if you look into the back of the shell, it might just steal your soul! MUWAHAHAHA!!! Anyway, great movie.
My dog eats the shit out of those things. Which is fantastic considering I’m deathly afraid of them. So when the cats bring one in through the doggy door my good ole doggo dispatches it with the quickness.
They unfurl in about 30 minutes, the it takes a couple of hours for them to harden enough to fly.
Used to love playing with them as a kid, great bug, maybe the best for that. Thats a very good timelapse you did, I would love to see the full color change though
my cousin used to tie a string on their foot and keep them like that as a pet. Years ago, it was weird.
DismantIed I just might be your cousin...
Me too.... During the dry season you can hear them in nearby trees...
I used to do that with dragonflies lol
Nah I tie it on the abdomen because the leg can fall off
😂 I have a pet cockroach....he's on a leash
What? Nincada is evolving!
Lol
In the next 17 years.
Dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun (this song plays for 17 years straight)

Do you have to cook them that night or can you freeze them till the next day without getting their shells hard?
Yup, note the wings sticking out of his mouth briefly. He loves them.
That's not a "hatch", that's a "plague"! ;)

Alabama does have Brood XIX of these periodical cicadas. They last appeared in 2011 and will return in 2024.
I live in southeast texas, and these come every summer, and buzz during the day when its near 100 degrees, or in the middle of the night
The Strongest faxxxxx
It’s happening right now

Cicada is so cool bug my favourite at summer ❤️❤️
Lol a long time ago my friends mom or aunt helped a cicada that couldn't fly because one of its wings were damaged so she helped it fly again I forgot how tho
Is the dog eating them?
Am I allowed to show this video for educational purposes?
Assuming you mean in a classroom setting, streaming from UA-cam, certainly.

Ha! Yup, our Jack feasted for days.
How did I get here?
so those r the sounds i hear all the time in the summer
17 years? So it takes 17 years till the fully evolve?
I think they live underground for around 17 years, before they come out and grow. But I think they die a few days later.
um a locust is a relative to grasshoppers and in big swarm they can eat people standing in plants. lucus from earthbound? lol

Fascinating creatures! I remember I spent many hours as a kid collecting cicadas, and then dumping them at the bottom of a tree to have a race of sorts. They always struck me as alien in nature due to their mechanical sounding drone and organized invasion.

That's exactly what happened when I hatched 19 cicadas!
Why does everyone have to be cruel and want to kill it? It can't bite, sting, or damage any crops or trees. It is a gentle bug. Leave it be.
All the cicadas featured in this video were female.
Great video!
