    They unfurl in about 30 minutes, the it takes a couple of hours for them to harden enough to fly.

    Used to love playing with them as a kid, great bug, maybe the best for that. Thats a very good timelapse you did, I would love to see the full color change though

    It's crickets until the video switches to outside in daytime. Then besides the birds the sound is these cicadas. Regular summer cicadas sound similar, but is more pulsing mechanical buzz. These are a constant loud shimmering at pretty much a single pitch, almost like a ringing in your ears.

    I have one on a twig in a bottle. He or she has stopped climbing, I assume the metemorphosis is eminent. Time is eleven thirty AM, I have to leave for a few hours, I do not know what to expect when I get back.

    It's not 17 years we have them every year in SEA. Lots of protein we hunt them at night in the forest. Really tasty to fry before they have wings. After wings still tasty but not so much.

    • @chapter4travels
      @chapter4travels 3 роки тому

      Do you have to cook them that night or can you freeze them till the next day without getting their shells hard?

  • @eyeinhand
    @eyeinhand  11 років тому +1

    Yup, note the wings sticking out of his mouth briefly. He loves them.

    That's not a "hatch", that's a "plague"! ;)
    Fabulous footage! It appears that you have the smaller red-eyed variety there in Virginia. (animals and people prefer eating those...) Once every 3 to 5 years, in rotation, we will have a hatching of those small, red eyed cicada in May/June, but on a regular basis (July/August), ours are the larger green/gray variety here in Alabama. My Jack Russel calls them "July snacks" :) .
    You have a good camera. I tried to record one molting, but my old camera didn't do it much justice.

      Alabama does have Brood XIX of these periodical cicadas. They last appeared in 2011 and will return in 2024.

    Great video - wish I had the time to do something like this. Was up on Breakneck Ridge Trail near Cold Spring, NY today and a bunch were flying up the hill, landing in trees. Didn't know they flew. I thought they just emerged and crawled up the tree they were sucking on for 17 years. I never seemed to be in the midst of where they were making all the racket - it was always coming from somewhere else. Where were you in 1996? What have all these Cicadas missed in that time. UA-cam is new to them.

      AP CO they show up every Summer, especially in hot climate countries like Vietnam, you can hear they scream in every where that have trees, to be honest its a bit annoying

    • @dumptruckintruthduke
      @dumptruckintruthduke 3 роки тому +1

      @@TanNguyen-xn6mp the 17 year, or periodical cicada, only emerge every 17 years. There are also 13 year broods. They are similar to the "annual" cicada, but they are completely different broods.

    Fascinating creatures! I remember I spent many hours as a kid collecting cicadas, and then dumping them at the bottom of a tree to have a race of sorts. They always struck me as alien in nature due to their mechanical sounding drone and organized invasion.

    Yeah, I know my Pokemon. Also, when they grow up, they become Ninjask, but in the Pokemon World, their discarded shells become Pokemon themselves. They're called Shedinjas, and they don't seem to do very much being discarded shells. However, in the game it says that if you look into the back of the shell, it might just steal your soul! MUWAHAHAHA!!! Anyway, great movie.
