Love the video!! I do believe that some plants that are labels “difficult” or “troublesome” make people think they have to do SO many things to keep it happy but if you take a more chill approach to them I think that definitely helps! I have an alocasia tiny dancer and I was terrified since I don’t have super high humidity (and don’t do anything about it lol) but I just made sure to give it space and not smother it with attention yet I still keep an eye on it and it’s doing great!! Anybody else agree with this approach??
Yes yes! If I’m in doubt, I just mist instead of full on drench the plant. I have an Alocasia culcuta jade millie (?) and it’s so massive now and happy giving a leaf every week or so 😊
A lot of people tend to handle their plants too much, when they really just need to leave them alone. Whenever you touch your plants you increase the risk of them getting pests, and whenever you move your plants they need to work overtime to acclimate to their new placements.
agree! if I know it's hard to care for, I often give the plant too much attention which means it ends up dying because I changed out the soil for fear of rot, over-pruned it, broke up the soil for fear of compaction, gave it way too much humidity, etc 😬 sometimes it's best to leave them be and see what happens :)
My prayer plant gave me trouble but now I’ve learned to keep it out of the sun and listen to you guys on my cell phone or iPad to find out how better to take care of it And now is doing great
My lemon lime maranta for whatever reason is a mealy bug magnet, and they hide in the petiole sheaths where I can not see them until its semi too late. He is such a beaut though and really does the most even through major mealy bug infestations and me only giving him tap water. I need to just spray him weekly when I water him.
There's a lot of info out there that tell you to keep marantas constantly moist. I think that's why people aren't aware they can get root rot just as easily as other plants
My marantas grow like weeds aswell! I do have crappy water quality and they do crisp a little but I don’t mind that much it doesn’t stunt their growth at all!
Here in the Philippines, We store top water to any container and let it seat for at least 24 hrs. In doing so, the chemical/s used to treat water will already be gone. Unless, the plants is directly planted on the ground, we water it directly from top water 🙂🌱. As for me, I prefer to collect rain water and used it to water my plants ❤️.
I agree with you about maranta! I have four different kinds and they’re all doing amazing. And I water them all with tap water. I love how easy they are to propagate!!
To people who have bad tap water (like me) use rainwater! The town I live in gives out free rain barrels and it's attached to our gutter! Rainwater in my opinion is the best water for plants and it's free!
I can agree with you regarding marantas. I have a regular one and kerchoveana version and they are pretty happy with me. I had a hard start with my regular maranta due the fact that I have a hard water and dry air at my place so some leafs ends are little bit crispy. Now I use filtered water and sprinkle them once a week (not sure if it is a right word) and they grow like crazy giving my new leafs all the time. These are definitely one of my favorite plants but they do scare me on the evenings as hell because of this rustling noise :D. Greatings from Poland!
My beautiful Begonia Maculata is my easiest, most grateful plant. She is GORGEOUS and grows like crazy… very very low maintenance. She is my first baby… My fav forever🪴🖤 PS. I’m looking forward to add a Hoya Carnosa Compacta to my collection thanks to yours! I’m obssesed 🤩
I have a frydek in kinda low humidity and she is thriving. For whatever reason alocasias and calatheas are just thriving even though my humidity has never been higher than around 40 for all winter. It might be my great grow light bar.
Love the Frydek, I think they are super hardy compared to other Alocasia. Red maranta are also fun for me. I keep having three new leaves at a time and it has been flowering for months now. Great choice of plants see ya soon!!
I recently found out that the alocasia Frydek is the name for the variegated version, I was sad because it sounds much cuter than green velvet (what we call them in Australia).
Hi Fern, kudos to you growing those babies so well! I have the variegated maranta, growing mine in LECA and she loves it and since you mentioned filtered water, I'm going to switch her reservoir to that! Happy growing!!!😍🌱💓
honestly I almost threw away my nepenthes because it dropped all the pitchers. but this summer it started growing quite a bit. sometimes I spray a bit of liquid fertiliser into the pitchers. I give it bright indirect light & like 55% humidity at the least, it's pretty vibey although the pitches are sensitive to pesticide treatments and the pitchers also seem to die when it gets cold/low light hehe. watering is sooo easy to, the leaves go limp when it wants water, at which point I absolutely drench the moisture retaining soil
I completely agree about the Marantas, I hesitated to get one at first but my red vein and my variegated have both been doing SO well! I was using distilled water at first but then switched to just left out tap water (Houston) which I add mosquito bits to, and it’s been all good for the most part. Occasionally I do still get a crispy leaf edge but I think that’s probably from the times I’ve forgotten to water in a timely fashion 😂 Definitely getting a pitcher plant in the spring, I went back and forth on getting one this year and I think they’d do pretty well for me with all this humidity we have here
I had the same red maranta ant it was doing really great, bloomed and was putting out new growth and then I realized it had mealies and I just could not get rid of them. They LOVED to hide in the little sheaths and in the unfurled leaves. I got so frustrated with the mealies I threw it in the trash 30 minutes ago 🙃
it’s wild to think that Canada has semi-good conditions for tropical plants even though it’s so far north! I live in Philly and I have a few of these plants. For the most part I agree that they’re not difficult but we’ll see if my nepenthes can hold onto its pitchers over the winter. My maranta was growing really well in my bathroom until it started yellowing randomly and I had to cut it up. Definitely need to invest in some humidifiers
I also find the maranta easy. I have the red one & lemon lime & they grow really well for me. I live in markham, Ontario & I also just use tap water without any problems. I've had the red one for over a year & never had any issues. I've only had the lemon lime for about a month & it's growing like crazy.😊
I find the Frydek to be a little on the pernickety side. It was doing great for me all summer, when on a week long camping trip and found spider mites all over it when I returned. It now only got two leaves 😕 but new growth happening yay. I struggled at first w many of the plants on your list but like you stated as soon as you figure them out they are easy. 👌🌿
I agree with you on melanochrysum, bella and maranta! 👍💚 I do not have a pitcher plant or frydek but my alocasia pink dragon is doing great! We live in Scotland 🏴 so the climate might be similar humidity, it sure rains a lot here 😂
This is so complicated, understanding that some species of plants may be easier or more difficult but that will depend on SO MANY things ... Maybe you should skip (but other people say they are difficult) it is precisely because that depends on many factors, the difficult part (it is to comply with all those factors) even everything varies depending on your apartment the direction in which you put them, the heat or wind coming in through windows things like that. It happens to all of us differently.
I agree with you about the micholitziana, grows amazingly and never had a pest on it. The marantha though... hehe, I've given up, the thrips love it too much.
I firmly believe that the prayer plant family does not deserve the bad stuff they receive. For me they’re quite easy! I stressed over them so much at the beggining of our journey but I swear they’re even easier than cacti! They just need a small peek every 2 days and I live in a city whose average humidity during most of the year is below 45%. Sure, I have some crispy edges and tips but ugh Marantas grow like a weed when you give them the right amount of sun. My next try will be Alocasia, I won’t lie, I’m afraid of them hehe.
@@mariacastro1180 she has been taking morning sun on a south-facing window most of the summer (until 11 am, and then I placed her inside by the window until two hours before dawn) and now that I have other plants that need more sun than her she’s on a north-facing window all day. I noticed her growth has slowed down a little since I put her there but I don’t really mind.
Oh my god, I have such a struggle with Caladiums. I had about 6 and they all died. I suspect I was overwatering them but I will never buy another one. I see posts and videos of people keeping them and they look great but I cannot keep them happy or alive. Your frydek is gorgeous! I have one about 1/4 that size but it's doing decently well. All my alocasia (except my scalprum) are doing well but they totaly are spider mite magnets. It's a constant battle.
Your Frydek (forgot the correct name) is amazing! I would love to have one but i'm struggling with alocasias, so maybe not yet. Thanks for reminding about the melanochrysom video! I just got a cutting and am still figuring out the care of that.
I live in Washington state so also pnw but I think this all the time when people say they really struggle w things or hate on certain plants that I’ve been growing for years w zero issues! Just got a melano cutting a few weeks ago but other than that all of these plants do well w me also
I am fascinated by the pitcher plant! I was wondering how long those pitchers last on the plant? Are they like a bloom that only lasts for a short period of time?
I think pitchers tend to last quite a long time because the plant puts so much energy into producing them and it's how they get nutrients so they stick around for a long time.
I have an Alocasia polly that did okay in my house for a while, then started to die back. I now think it might have been doing a hibernation thing, but I put it in my greenhouse and it bounced back, so I think it's generally more happy there.
I have an Alocasia Amazonica that's over three years old, sitting in my living room. The first year during winter it dropped back to one leaf, but since then it grew back to having 3-4 large leaves, with one dying and a new one growing out per season. I believe the trick is really just to put an Alocasia in a place with indirect bright light, and then never move it again.
Melanos were the first rare/uncommon/expensive plants that I fell in love with when I was starting out. Since then, all I have heard is people talking about how hard it is, etc. and it honestly scared me away and almost made me feel sorta of jaded about them?? You have rejuvenated my love for them and made me see her the way I first did 😍 In Oregon, I'm not in a terribly different climate and I don't struggle with any of the others you mentioned either so.. I just might make the plunge. 😆 Worth a try, at least
I live in the desert and have a melano that’s been around for a year, I’ve taken cuttings, and it’s done great for me! I don’t consistently use any type of humidifier or anything :)
@@hollypuckett3931 I don’t yet have the HUGE leaves you see on big mature melano, but they are hand sized and getting bigger each leaf. I have 3 vines growin up a pole. They did start as a little baby plant, and early on some leaves did get stuck, but it seems she’s adapted to my home ☺️
I have some luck with calatheas and I think it's what you said, my house and environment is on the humid side. Sometimes just opening the window, will increase it to 60% which is not ideal for us humans I think? but great for the plants. So I'm just lucky in that sense. Our water quality otoh is not great, so I do need to use filtered water. Also, yay! I'm a Gemini too 😋
What’s your process for transitioning a plant from greenhouse to a normal room environment? Like what you mentioned you’re planning to do with the frydek?
Environment matters so much! I'm in BC too so the higher humidity helps a lot. My Melano has been very easy. I can't seem to propagate marantas though? They always die I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong there...
I'm the same with all of those (I don't have a pitcher plant yet) exceptttt the frydek 💀 she doesn't like me and I had a spider mite outbreak that def affected her 😅😅 but she just started bouncing back! Also ty for the scentbird discount 🙏🙏
Hey lady! Your showcased plants look great. My Frydek, Melano, and LL Maranta are doing well. I have them figured out. I have not been unable to keep Nepenthes or Red Vein Maranta though. Sad, cause I love them. I'll just enjoy looking at yours!
I love the plants you showed. Beautiful! I have an Alocasia and I had it next to a humidifier and still most of the leaves died. I have two left that I repotted n hopefully she doesn’t die on me. I also have a maranta. I water it with distilled water and have it next to a humidifier too. I do have leaves unfurling but I’m wondering why one of the leaves always turns brown and crisp. It’s always one at a time. To me it hasn’t grown a lot and I wish it did. Not sure what else to do. I also have it under a grow light.
@@ruthstevens3720 it could also be because of fertiziling too much, apperently they don’t like that. But I’m just guessing here haha. Good luck with it.
Hi just wondering if you suffer gnats around your plants? I am at the moment since i have more plants now and wonder if they like some particular plants. Cause when i only had succulents and cacti i never had any pests issues. I am using the sticker thing on my plant pots to catch them for now. If you have any good tips please share. Thank you.
I love Alocasias, but I never know what to do with the bloom. Should I cut them? The good news is that they’ve all bloomed. But tend not to grow new leaves after for a long while. Love your show!
Surprisingly my nepenthes is thriving above my kitchen sink even with using well water!!!! I just posted it on my IG yesterday cuz the pitchers were looking sooo juicy! I had been wondering how your pitcher plant was doing because I got mine after seeing yours agesss ago!!!! I love it so much!
Hi sweetness I've got a lemon-lime maranta that is growing like weeds too. Where I live , slc Utah, usa, it is very very dry (but it's already snowing here) so mine is next to my humidifier and I use distilled water just like you said. Mine is getting so big and thriving beautifully too.. Although I'm too scared to have any of yours today 🙈 except the marantas
I just got the red-veined maranta and I love it so much! I live in Arizona, so the tap water quality is horrible everywhere 😭 I hope I can keep it from getting too crispy
My lemon lime maranta looks a lot like the one displayed with the new leaves much lighter than the old growth (completely inverted pattern and no dark velvety leaves). I have looked this up several times and so many people on message boards say they will darken, but I’ve had new growth for 2 months and they are the same color as when they first unfurled. Does anyone know how long it takes for the leaves to becomes darker?
@@suzycihak2392 I did read on a website that it could be getting too much light, so I moved it further away from the window, but I haven't had a new leaf come through since then. Was just wondering if anyone was familiar with this issue.
That happened to mine when I transferred her to a self-watering planter. Maybe it's water related? When I was keeping it in a regular pot in soil it would always dry up to the bone (that's why I transferred it, I was worried it would die eventually if I keep forgetting to water it). But it was also growing the most contrasted leaves I've ever seen on that plant, with dark part almost black. Since living in a permanently moist soil the leaves are very pale.
Hey Fern, I got a nepenthes plant during the summer months and it's doing great and thriving but it's getting colder here in New Mexico, do you have any tips n tricks to keep it thriving in the cold winter months? Also, its still in the original nursery pot and soil. When would it be a good time to repot and what potting soil did you use for ur nepenthes plant? Any tips you have are appreciated and thank you. 🪴🍂
My melano keeps chocking 🤪 and last time I tried helping it, I broke the new growth off 💔 it's due to the lack of humidity. Another reason to get my ikea cabinet finished and occupied 💦
Just me looking over mi 5th marantha on the one leaf club. The worst thing is that I have calatheas and stromanthes living their best life but maranthas just don't like me!
I wish you lived closer to Tacoma wa! I have both silver band and black maranta that I would love to share with you but I don’t trust myself shipping 😓😭
Hey Fern!! You look gorgeous in this video!! Guess what!? Im a Gemini ♊ 🤪 also!!!! Very great video boo!! Im ready for your next Spooky Story!! Those are fun!!

So true that anyone can be good with plants if they learn! I used to be the worst, but now I have over 50 and they're thriving!
Love the video!! I do believe that some plants that are labels “difficult” or “troublesome” make people think they have to do SO many things to keep it happy but if you take a more chill approach to them I think that definitely helps! Our water quality otoh is not great, so I do need to use filtered water. Also, yay! I'm a Gemini too 😋
The video was great I looked it watching from Jamaica 🇯🇲
I’m definitely in the trial and error stage with my plants. Girl you’re so lucky you can use tap water for your plants! lol 💚✨💓
What’s your process for transitioning a plant from greenhouse to a normal room environment? Like what you mentioned you’re planning to do with the frydek?
Just signed up for scentbird. Cant wait.
I feel the same about alocasia Frydek and hoya bella! However I can't keep marantas alive haha. Great video, as always !
Environment matters so much! I'm in BC too so the higher humidity helps a lot. My Melano has been very easy. I can't seem to propagate marantas though? They always die I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong there...
How did the ants get into the pitchers in your pitcher plant?! Sounds fascinating!!
Love to watch your videos. 🙋♀️😊
Calathea and marantas are my prides and joys! I would kill for a variegated maranta!
I'm the same with all of those (I don't have a pitcher plant yet) exceptttt the frydek 💀 she doesn't like me and I had a spider mite outbreak that def affected her 😅😅 but she just started bouncing back! Also ty for the scentbird discount 🙏🙏
Lovely collection.
BTW I like the hair style you had a year ago.
I love your nails they look amazing 😻
It might need more water? My maranta silver band gives me yellow crispy leaves when she’s thirsty for too long.
@@Drtschrdr123 I do have her in a self watering system. Wonder if that isn’t enough.
@@ruthstevens3720 it could also be because of fertiziling too much, apperently they don’t like that. But I’m just guessing here haha. Good luck with it.
I love this video!!! Also, I love your live mug. I’m the opposite of you- a libra sun, Gemini moon, Pisces rising ❤️❤️❤️ sending love to you!
I cut mine off as soon as I can get a good grip on the bloom stalk so the plant can put its energy into growing new leaves
What fo you consider "high" humidity! Ty gor your VD's!
Nice video! 💚
It would be gorgeous, if you would combine the two variegated hoya bella in one pot! 😍
Thanks for sharing another great video(as always)!!
P.S. Where did you get that🖤🌈 Rainbow Sweater??? I'm in Looovve with it!!
Omg, now I wanna know your moon sign lol. Loved the video! :D
Do you have a humidifier inside your greenhouse cabinet?
My Hilo has 3 leaves, when a new leave is coming out, the old one dies HOWEVER my mirantas grow like there's no tomorrow and I live in a desert.
Have you ever tried adjusting the light? Less, or more light might help.
ohhhhhh my god i thought my h. bella var. was dropping leaves because i was overwatering so i watered even less!!! 🤦
My “humidity loving” plants are also thriving in 50% humidity. I just find that they need to be moist at all times, especially with melanos.
My melano keeps chocking 🤪 and last time I tried helping it, I broke the new growth off 💔 it's due to the lack of humidity. Another reason to get my ikea cabinet finished and occupied 💦
I really struggle with peace lily which is considered to be easy
My lemon lime maranta is doing well but I’m struggling with my little green maranta kerchoveana :( she had spider mites. Hopefully she can recover
Just me looking over mi 5th marantha on the one leaf club. The worst thing is that I have calatheas and stromanthes living their best life but maranthas just don't like me!
9:26 Was that a peduncle on your outer variegated H. Bella?!?!?! 💚🪴🌱🌿🧐
OH MY GOD VIBE! Also a Gemini Sun, Libra Rising... Cancer Moon
Dude, I can grow Ficus, peperomias, Hoyas no problem, but my golden pothos looks so terrible 😂😅🤦🏽♀️ love the hair fern! 🧡
I just love how you say fragrance.
Hahah thank you 😃
@@wildfern You're welcome!
"these are thirsty hoya" ahha I cantt
I wish you lived closer to Tacoma wa! I have both silver band and black maranta that I would love to share with you but I don’t trust myself shipping 😓😭
I didn’t say what I bought. Hoya Bella😁
my pitcher plant don't produce pitcher.. >.< just pure leaves.. T.T
Hey Fern!! You look gorgeous in this video!! Guess what!? Im a Gemini ♊ 🤪 also!!!! Very great video boo!! Im ready for your next Spooky Story!! Those are fun!!
Just bought one.!
I’m not struggling with growth on my variegated maranta but it’s not as variegated as before. Do you think propagation would encourage more variegation??
