Yes these plant are planted in the ground. Bigger plants need more ground area to develop roots to support long vine and many flowers. If soil are too hard or too sandy or too clay, we should recondition the soil. Buy a garden soil or potting mix and mix with existing soil or even straight from the bag. I would dig a hole minimum about foot deep and two foot in diameter to replace the hard soil. I hope this will help. Thank you.
