Winard and his crew used to come once a year to the old New Orleans Restaurant in Seattle, where I worked. Always the event of the year. For Winard it was all about joy, in the service of Allah. Before each show, he'd stop at Seattle's famous Pike Place Public Market, buy the biggest, most expensive bunch of salmon he could find hand it over to the cook to do it up, not for the band, but just for the staff who worked there. What a guy! ...to my mind, one of the greatest drummers on the planet.
Winard is the coolest. It feels like all the top musicians are so nice and so full of life instead of themselves. I hope I can meet other musicians as passionate about music as Winard is :)
Wow! Yesss...what a discovery. First heard him on UA-cam playing with Bill Henderson. Great drummer. The sextet, arrangement, real delight to listen and watch. Thanks for this upload.
Apparently you've never actually met him. I've studied with him for two years and he's the most down to earth man I've met in a while. He loves his music and he's not afraid to show it.
@Seefy Yes, indeedy, and amen! I was lucky enough to play with him a few times. I was a particularly pitiful player at the time, and he must've hated to have to even suffer through a minute of my playing, and he still backed up my crummy solos like a true gentleman! (Yes, he's an exuberant player, and therefore a bit intimidating... and he's a great drummer.... one of the best around now)
We lost Billy, but we gained Wynard Harper ... carrying the flame, go on brother!

You have to love watching a guy who is having fun while he plays. The lack of arrogance is refreshing.

my 1st exposure to this cat was like all others - via public radio. It's about the only place today outside of the internet to hear really great jazz
