Really, it's a pose that happens when you push your knees together to rest something on them, like your wrists while holding a phone, a book, laptop, whatever. When your feet are together your knees tend to separate. It's exaggerated in photos like these for obvious reasons, but it's a pretty common pose that I've seen people of all ages, male and female alike, use over the years.
