What ever happened to free will? Us students should have the choice instead of adults, such as yourselves. Before you were talking about parents not wanting their child to learn, kinda implying that they were wrong but what your doing is the same only on the other side of this debate. Again, what ever happened to free will? Should us learners not have a choice in our education? Just because our brains aren't completed yet doesn't mean we shouldn't get choices. In class, I want to improve on the skills that will help me with my life, such as maths but no that time is being taken up by words I don't care to understand. I'm not saying we shouldn't learn it, don't get me wrong. All I'm asking for is a choice, nothing more. I just want my free will, that's all.

Yes it should be cumpolsory - I'm so wrapped when ever I hear the most simplest of Maori greetings i.e Kia Ora - across the globe. Living in Australia was atrocious, it's 2018, culture-wise they haven't a clue and never will

I'm in two minds about it because if you force a language, in one way people aren't really becoming passionate about it, rather it's an obligation. However, Maori were forced to learn English, doesn't that say something? To me, by learning Te Reo, I am doing my conscious part in participating in the Treaty of Waitangi. I always think if Wales can resuscitate welsh Gaelic than perhaps we can see a similar trend here, as Welsh Gaelic was considered a dying language at one point and now most people can speak it in Wales. I think there is hope. I think first before we make a language compulsory, however, let's get behind Maori culture as a whole and celebrate it. Let us all learn what REALLY went on during the land wars in New Zealand and the historical context behind the signing of the treaty of Waitangi, not just James Cook came along and look, we have signed an agreement!? No. We need to understand it and understand everything about it. And I petition that Matariki be a national holiday, a few days off as New Zealand's version of Thanksgiving, where we share kai with our families and celebrate the winter solstice and those who have passed on.
