I'm glad to see you asked the true experts. Kids don't mess around when it comes to tasty food. I imagine she detected more charcoal flavor in the ones from the pellet grill because it is basically designed to smoke the food, so it is probably doing a better job of infusing the burgers with the flavor than just standard charcoal. Of course, if you did direct cook right over the fire in the charcoal grill, it might get the edge again. My favorite pellet blend is a 50/50 mix between this Pitt Boss charcoal blend and the Pitt Boss competition blend. And, if you need extra smoke, fill a smoke tube with mesquite blend. Works for pretty much everything :)
OMG.....I have been agonizing over buying a new grill because i love gthe charcoal flavor that comes with grilling with charcoal. So i been looking at pellet grills but have been leaning towards the gravity fed charcoal grills so i can still use charcoal....but theres only 2 options: masterbuilt Char-griller. This really opens up my options. thanks for the video, the kids made my day!
I was surprised honesty that it tasted like charcoal myself, but Char Griller has a new Gravity fed charcoal grill. So it you want the convince of a pellet grill but keep charcoal, look up the Char Griller Gravity 980.
I have the exact same problem, but for the last 5 years I have been cooking with the masterbuilt gravity series. It's been an awesome grill for the most part but I'm curious about pellets. But also hate the thought of losing that traditional bbq flavor
That first type of plates are the kind of plates I have. Well only a few left. 3 of the big ones, are cpl of the breakfast plates and maybe 1 of the saucers.
Been doing it for months with the pit boss competition blend and the jack Daniel's charcoal pellets, 2:1 wood:charcoal cant really taste much charcoal honestly
Can you please clarify from and adult's perspective what the taste difference was in your opinion and is it worth purchasing the charcoal flavored pellets? Tku
The pellets gave the same taste as Charcoal. If I don't know which was which, I couldn't tell by taste. For me, I would say definitely worth buying if you are looking for that charcoal taste from a pellet grill.
I want to try there pellets. I just bought a pellet grill. finishing up mesquite very soon and have bear mountain hickory up next. I will be trying this on my next set of pellets.
Just get you 3 or 4 square pellet tubes, get b& b lump charcoal hot in weber smoke stack, pellet grill is running, meat seasoned and ready, take square pellet tubes put in little pellets, add a chuck of charcoal, add pellets add charcoal chunk and so on, stack square pellet tubes on top of each other, put on meat, check back in 3 hours
I've got that same Char-Griller rig but with the side fire box. Liked it so much that when it came time to replace it I bought the exact same setup again. We'll the new one was getting a little long in the tooth so I took the plunge and bought a pellet grill. No idea why I waited so long to get one. I've been very happy with it so far. The only thing i miss is the charcoal flavor when doing burgers & such. I saw theae pellets and have been dying to try them. Your review just sealed the deal. Don't get me wrong, love the flavors I'm getting with the pellet grill, sometimes though ya just want charcoal.
Question: I see you put the burgers in one side of the grill and the charcoal in the other side. I thought you have to put the charcoal right under the burgers.
Does charcoal use less pellets than wood? I would assume so. Can anyone answer that question? I feel like the charcoal would burn longer and hotter so the system would use less. Any thoughts?
Are you talking about the pellet grill? On it the grease tray only goes in one way and this model does not have a water tray. the grease goes down the tray and into a through and into the grease bucket hanging on the side. But hey, maybe the is a better way that I'm not sure about!!
@@TheCrazyPop your putting in the grease tray backwards. The Handle goes in towards the back wall. It’s seems back asswards but that’s the way the tray is designed to sit in there. If the tray is in correctly no grease gets in the water tray. I have the same model
Great review brotha. In my opinion there is a mild hint of charcoal flavor. Is not a bold flavor like the briquettes. Not sure if i would use it for a long cook again. They are great regardless but I think if mixed with hickory or mesquite it will give a more of a pronounce taste. Thanks for sharing. Cheers and keepbbqing
Thanks, yeah we was surprised how much it tasted like charcoal. I used Pit Boss fruit blend on a pork loin in our last video and was really impressed with the flavor. Thanks for watching!!
I just bought one bag of the Pit Boss Charcol pellets this afternoon just to test! In my opinion, don't buy it if you looking for the charcoal flavor or smell... It is not there.
Liked the video!I just tried some of these on some country style ribs,I really liked them.I have a UDS also but I love the pellet smoker and these pellets give you almost the same flavor.
Enjoyed the kids and their communities. I especially liked the way the little girl took it so seriously. But let's face it they don't have the most sophisticated pallets. I wish you would have tasted and gave your opinion. While entertaining this video really is no help.
You should have used an instant-read thermometer and pulled both off at the same doneness (internal temperature). The burgers cooked on the pellet grill looked pretty rare to me vs. the burgers cooked on the charcoal grill which seemed more “done”. From far away, I don’t think I would say that the pink color is some sort of smoke ring. I’ll bet your kids liked the burger that was cooked more thoroughly and couldn’t really discern the contribution of the fuel.
I should have showed it, but I did cook both to the same temps and I did use a Instant read thermometer. I even said at 7:24 I will check the temp. So all burgers was cooked at the same internal temp, that is the reason we left the burgers on the pellet grill on longer, they was not up to the same temp as the charcoal burgers. We tried to keep everything the same as possible, even the internal temp of the burgers.
Apparently, according this and a previous comment, you sound like Dave Ramsey doing an impersonation of Foghorn Leghorn. Or maybe it's the other way around.
In my honest opinion, the pellets gave the burgers a great charcoal taste, more than I expected. I used the kids because if they don't like something, they will say so.
Good honest review of the burgers .. Sounds like the pellets gave a charcoal flavor maybe not as much as actual charcoal but pretty close it sounds like . Good job Cheers
Honestly, in my opinion, the taste is very close to each other. I was expecting the pellets not to give the burgers a true charcoal taste, but they did an excellent job.
I agree, fat on the coals does add flavor, but I was trying to keep it as close to cooking on the pellet grill as possible. I appreciate you watching, thank you!!!
@@TheCrazyPop A guy did a whole pellet Brand Review and it turns out that KingSFord was the Best, I tried it and I have to agree. I can definitely taste the difference and much better quality. Good Luck
Just my opinion but I don't think the charcoal pellets are designed for cold smoking. If I was going to cold smoke, I would opt for a hickory or maybe mesquite. The charcoal pellets are more for cooking.
@@TheCrazyPop You may be right...but I don't know where the charcoal flavor is going to come from, because the smoke from these pellets smell exactly like burning paper, and taste about the same.

The Pit Boss charcoal pellet is actually a Charcoal / Hickory blend pellet.

Question:
I see you put the burgers in one side of the grill and the charcoal in the other side. I thought you have to put the charcoal right under the burgers.
No, you can if you want too, but I always cook them indirect. They turn out much juicier and the grease doesn't flare up!
Does charcoal use less pellets than wood? I would assume so. Can anyone answer that question? I feel like the charcoal would burn longer and hotter so the system would use less. Any thoughts?
I haven't noticed a difference in if one burns faster than another.
Charcoal pellets definitely burn hotter than traditional pellets.
I hope I can find these north of the border for my pit boss. Love my Weber charcoal but like the easy set up of the pellet grill.
Look at Walmart.com if they don't have any in the store.
