Great video! Informative and full of great tips - some I used in my 40 year corporate photography career. And your presentation was spot on. One thing I did when I built my studio was have the floor made so that I could flood part of it with about 1” of water. I had a plug hole installed in the centre so it could drain after. I used it when I photographed white goods (refrigerators etc) to get perfect, dustless reflections. It was cheaper than black perspex and didn’t need dusting before or retouching after. This was the ‘80s-90’s when we shot film so the savings were substantial. I either adjusted the legs to be just above the water or sat the legs on blocks to raise it a little. Once the water settled we got perfect reflections - which one client loved. All the best for your and your partners soon to be new baby.
Wow, yeah that's a whole other level of build out. For this studio I designed it so I could easily add 2 additional bedrooms and baths so it could be a full 3 bed, 3.5 bath with kitchen if Fstoppers ever stops using it as the main studio. No way could I afford to have the floors slope and have a drain in the middle. I wonder with today's tech if you would go for such an extreme but awesome water feature or if it's just way easier to do it all in photoshop. How many appliances were you shooting?
@@phaskellhall I agree - digital capture and photoshop make the water idea redundant these days. I didn’t do a whole lot of appliances except for one steady client but I asked the builder if it was possible and as it didn’t add too much to the budget we went with it. I was shooting mostly medium and large format then. If I was starting today, I reckon a few iPhones and a high spec iPad would meet most clients’ needs!
I love that your storage looks like and actual working studio's storage, and not these catalogue style, clinical spaces where I cannot see any real person ever working!
I also changed my LEDs to RGBCWW lights that you can control each one individually and make routines for each. My gf hated the extra cost but loves how convenient it is to tell google to turn on a specific pot light or group.
Unfortunately Lee left the island for a few weeks and then the hurricane hit and then I left and he came back. We just haven’t been in the same room for a few months. We should try to figure out a way to do it remotely. -P
Some nice tips, thanks. If there's a metal shop in your town then it may be less of a hassle to just sketch up a mounting bracket for them to fabricate for you. That way you can customize the size and mounting locations perfectly for your purpose and it'll be comparable in price or less than finding and shipping something made by a manufacturer like Manfrotto.
I made a 4 section folding 10'x7' white pegboard for use as a background for the very infrequent events I display at. In the studio it has an assortment of long and short mounting pins (bought a set of them) from which I can hang all my tripods (collapsed and in their bags), light modifiers, frequently used cables, etc. At the base is a 2 row box with 12 6"x6" dividers to hold boom extensions, light stands, etc. The pegboard works well and I can strip it in 5 minutes and fold it up for transport to an event for its original purpose. I just take a picture of it first so I can return all the items to their original locations afterwards.

Manfrotto is an Italian brand. Italians, and Europeans in general, don't build stick-framed buildings, so there is no such thing as stud spacing in their mind. They build out of clay or cement blocks.
3:45 - I want to do that backlighting with a motion sensor. I think it looks better than a lonely bulb hanging off the roof. That's a great idea. 13:20 - You're in Charleston now? Good idea I'd say being close to the family for when you become a father soon.

Yeah I get that but I bet Manfrotto sells way more gear and grip in the US than in Italy alone. My suggestion is just to make the product the most universal so it can work everywhere. In Puerto Rico my house is made of concrete so it wasn't an issue at all but almost all wood framed homes world wide are still going to have similar spacing.

Well it still seems like a bad design choice. They should either modify it for the US market or make it adjustable for those who still find studs not in the perfect location the mount this (like my setup with a massive breaker box in the wall). I read that the spacing is actually 18.75" which is a strange spacing right? Most of our plywood and sheetrock here are 4' or 8' wide so 16 and 24 inch spacing makes sense. -P

I’ve never had a problem but I have heard people mention this. I keep meaning to get some sort of metal box to put all the chargers in since this studio is made of wood. In Puerto Rico everything is made of concrete and tile so I don’t worry as much. -P
@@FStoppers i also heard a lot of it... until one day had one UPS catching fire under my feet during a power surge.. it literaly had flames coming out of the vents.. from that day on.. im really mindfull of disconecting ups and putting them in a more secure place..

We considered delivering in PR and our OBGYN was amazing but the hospitals there can be pretty horrifying. Cristin wasn’t having it after an ER visit. -P
Probably to some degree. However, if you think about 4x8' plywood or sheetrock, at some point the common, standard sizing comes into the side of a pickup truck bed. Most pickup trucks can hold a 4 foot wide board that is 8 feet long. It could vary 5% based on metrics or empirical measurements but surely a good L bracket could account for those minor changes. Also, I'd be curious to know what percentage of grip equipment is sold in the US vs every other market. I would think catering to the US would be a top priority just in number of sales. Or do like most electronics companies do and offer a European model and a US model.
Ha why is that? I agree you should have a 9-5 while you transition into full time photography but once your photography starts making equal or more money then you can make the jump. I had a retail job for the longest time that was making like $40k a year or something dumb but my wedding business was bringing in $60k. It was hard to give up the $40k esp the healthcare but when I was finally laid off it was the best feeling ever. Biggest advice is to just not jump into photography or any creative career 100% until you know it’s becoming more and more successful each year. -P
