Skill Progression #1: Kips (Part 2 and 3)

- Опубліковано 28 чер 2009
- This is the conclusion to the Kipping Process, an attempt to outline a strategic approach to teaching kips from the earliest level through to gymnasts training for level 5. It shows the drills and progressions I have seen work for coaches with more knowledge and experience than me.
This video contains parts II and III, which demonstrate drills for teaching the glide and the kip action.
Thank you to all those involved. You were very helpful.

Thank you for this video. I'm beginner in gymnastics but this tips can help me so much. Ty
Thanks for posting, good drills and conditioning and great gymnasts!
Great great work. Specially the quality of the shaping and precision!
great stuff. My daughter is a level 3 right now and doesn't have to do kips yet but next level she will need to do the glide. I've been watching level 5's struggling to get their kips in our gym. I'll save these to faves and let my daughter watch it! Thank you!
I've been looking for this!! YOUR AWESOME! Oh and the girls too!
@RoxGymnastics
It's 1.25" (or maybe 1.5" I forget exactly) PVC pipe. It's available at any hardware store. You can probably get a length of 10 feet for about $5 or so, and it's roughly the same diameter of the uneven bar, which is why I like it. Thanks.
Great video!! Your videos are professional made and tons of information. I am so happy you will run the JAOVideos Summer Camp in 2014, at Bounce Gymnastics!! We will be there!!

gosh you focus so much on form that when they get their kips, they will be GORGEOUS :O good job!! :)
I am gonna practice these drills and thank you for the video!! I think it'll help me with my kips better:)
I wonder who invented the kip. It's such a tricky move!
wow well done!!
Thank you! This is a great process to begin kippng and i'm going to use them on my level 4's, 5's AND 6's!! I think going back to basics will fix their form! Do you happen to have a video for baby giants??
@LTGYM2004 I've used carpet squares in the past, but they're not quite as smooth as I'd like. In the video it's just a piece of laminated paper, it slides without being "slippery."
wow there awsome. and i had to learn a kip after i made team. there very good
that's cool! I wish we could see the little girl do a real kip at the end of the video!
@flippygirl03
Fan of the band, fan of (the first season of) Friday Night Lights (and the movie), and I don't use music with words in it b/c the message of the lyrics won't be in agreement with the message of the videos.
Nice
Explosions in the Sky again!!! Are you a fan of the band or the Friday Night Lights movie? Or both?
These videos have been super helpful! Thanks for the ideas!
But you can pick drills which you think gonna work for you and your athletes and build your own kip strategy. 2-3 exercises for each part should be more than enough.
oh thanks
wow there awsome. and i had to learn a kip after i made team. there very good how old are the??
Is that a carpet square you used so the gymnasts could slide on the mat while working on glide swings?
Thank you. The girls say thanks as well.
Do you ever come across the problem of gymnasts jumping to the bar with slack in their shoulders or reaching past the bar and sort of catching (which with the slack in their shoulders causes a sort of "dumping")?I
I never really had this problem till this gym or didn't see it. Moreso, I'm looking at other ways to correct besides using an opposed grip and having them relearn jump to the bar while holding the bar versus jumping off a board.
@JAOVideos I have the same question as him! Are there any tips for teaching bigger girls?
@TheTaliBean They're not "apologies" so much as "disclaimers" and I only put them there because the internet is full of very rude people with nothing better to do than rip on kids. True, the disclaimers might not stop rude people from being rude, but I figured I'd at least make an effort to dissuade them first. As for making beam videos, I'm not much of a beam coach, and I appreciate the requests and I do give consideration to all the requests I get, so I'll just say "I'll see what I can do." tx
my daughter is trying to get her kip and she is having trouble pushing up after the glide what is the best drill to help her
michelle lyall i think speed so you will get up a little it works for me i almost can do kip
Wish I could do adult pre-pre-team.
i think they have a great future in gymnastics..
Without seeing your attempt I can't give you specific advice, but generally speaking, if you can truly do all the conditioning in this video and part 1, in the right shapes and consistently, then it will just be a matter of timing and time. Don't be tempted to bend your elbows and fall on your gut just to make it up, or you'll be trying to fix that forever. Keep practicing perfect shapes and conditioning, regularly, and be patient. Be very patient.
@Petsforever actually I know one is Emily and I don't know who the other is, I'm a gymnast their now and I know Emily
What is what called?
How long it gonna take to teach glide kip, let say it is average gymnast same age as on video. Thanks
Yev Klaus 6 months to a year depending
@SilentDiablo No.
no he said the names of them were Emmers and Gen
does level 4 go on high bar?
Damon Howard yes
what is that called????????
hey umm is that asian girl s working with yous named hanna Li?
@dark00dreams
I'll shoot you an email.
sorta long...
Something is missing! The problem is not the form because of the conditioning but for the gymnast to coordonate all different parts. But you hold them all the time and you stop them. I guess after all this work we would still have problems with anticipation and pulling the bar.
Good drills as part a general conditioning (a little every training) but some coordinated speed work need to be done.
you don't have to do all this useless drills!
I too have heavier gymnasts and would like ideas for helping them rather than the exhaustive spotting
