- The Sani Pass brings us from South Africa into Lesotho. After both Noraly (@ItchyBoots - Honda CRF250L) and Kinga (@onherbike - BMW F800GS) rode up Sani Pass, we got inspired to ride the dreaded mountain pass ourselves. Like proper mountain goats, the Yamaha Ténéré 700’s brought us up to the top. On roads like these we are very happy with our middleweight adventure motorcycles.
At the top of the pass, our motorcycle journey through Africa continues in a new country. Lesotho lies at our feet, we’re exited to explore The Kingdom in the Sky!

ABOUT US
Hi there and welcome to the motorcycle adventures of Jessica and Maarten! It started with the idea to ride motorcycles from our hometown in The Netherlands all the way down to Cape Town in South Africa. In december 2020 we started our journey on our Yamaha Ténéré 700’s. Morocco was the first African country we visited. Due to closed borders we could not travel further south from there. We turned things around and shipped our bikes to Cape Town. From here we will ride up north. Follow our journey through Africa here on UA-cam!

I got lost once in Lesotho turning left into an unpaved road at the bottom of the Sani pass, spent 3 days in the southern mountains region, pointing west back to the SA border. Came out on the 3rd day with no more fuel, spare wheels, or food. But was one of the best landscapes I have ever ever seen, the high mountains, the green land, the remote villages, simply amazing!!! Beautiful country

Thanks! Lesotho is a magnificent travel destination for adventure riding, the country simply has it all! The waterfall is one of the most spectacular we’ve ever seen, even though it wasn’t in full flow.

nothing really . Chinese have factories there though , and they benefit from help that is meant for Africans . Maybe that is how they benefit .

China loans the whole world money, including the US and the UK.
I lived and worked inLesotho for 20yrs, building Dams and roads, with multinational consortiums. None of whom were Chinese. Katse Dam with its spectacular northern access road, Moteng pass towards Oxbow and Mokhotlong. More recently Chinese built yes.

Super geil to read your comment Ulrich! 😁 The views from the bike are mainly shot with a GoPro 9, the close ups and at-side-of-the-road-shots with one of our iPhones (12) and the drone we use is a DJI Mavic Air. Lately we bought a Compactcamera with a 30X zoom lens (Panasonic LUMIX) to shoot some nice footage of the game in national parks. Obviously we’re going to use that for some motorcycle footage as well!

Please plant trees in Lesotho. It is a beautiful land but would be even more beautiful and productive with forests.
Most of Lesotho’s grounds are far above the tree line where no forest can survive. In the “lower” parts of the countries you can find some forests though.

Sorry for that, hopefully can pull the trigger any time soon to enjoy the amazing roads in Lesotho! 😬 The Ténérés indeed sound amazing with the 270 degrees crankshaft. A bit similar to the Africa Twin actually. We spent one week in Lesotho, on our Polarsteps account you can see the route we took if you like. Too bad we missed each other, would have been great to meet!

What was the purpose of saying the roads were constructed by the Chinese?
We find that a remarkable fact to share.
Lesotho is a nation of thieves. I have been robbed on every occasion that I have been there (four times!). If you want to ride Sani Pass, go up from the Natal side in RSA. Ride up the pass, enjoy a beer at the pub at the top and return down to RSA the same day. That way you will avoid being robbed or even killed like some hikers.
We're sorry to hear you had these experiences. We had nothing but good experiences during the week we spent in Lesotho.
