Thank you for taking the Swallowtail caterpillars inside with some parsley until they turn into chrysalis! I do this with several types of caterpillars too. I find that too many gardeners don’t have the respect and consideration for other creatures that are just trying to survive that you have. What a lovely thing to see!
Thank you!
I love the Curly Parsley ❤
Excellent tutorial . My mother makes a green soup with parsley. She swears by its usefulness as a digestive aid. She used to use over the counter herbs for her digestive problems. Now she just eats her green soup recipe and hasn't used the over the counter herbs in months.
+bushcraft2012 Cool. Do you have her recipe? If so, send it over and I'd love to take a peek at it.
FYI parsley is a blood cleanser, so it helps our bodies rid waste too. ☺️
This is the best video ever about Parsley in the whole internet. THANK YOU very much Donna.

Another insanely informative video, I guess I just keep coming back to Rainbow Gardens. Thank you.
Your instructions are thorough and easy to understand. I also appreciate the fact that you bring in the caterpillars so they can continue to grow. :)
Thank you so much!
Thank you for all the information, maam. It really helped me out on my parsley planting journey!
I tuned in for parsley tutorial, got a bonus lovely butterfly tutorial, lady you the best ❤️👍
excellent video. Just what i was looki9ng for
Glad it helped
I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this video. It's incredibly comprehensive. Thank you so much for making this. I learnt a lot! Best wishes, from London. I hope you're staying safe :)
You're so welcome!
Wow ! That's what I call the encyclopedia of parsley. I especially like the butterfly section. Oh, and the parsley root in soup was an awesome idea !
Do you ever make bone-broth? That's all the rage currently, the health experts say it's super healthy...
Thank you
+timshel Leo Love me some stock/broth. I make some every week, especially in the winter (eat a lot of soup).
The video is packed with great information! From starting from seed, pest controls, storing to cooking (ice cube is a great idea). The little worms were a little scary to look at, but the butterfly picture was beautiful! Thank you for the video!
Thank you so much! :)
Great video , thanks alot for doing this ! I’m going to try to grow parsley and cilantro , wish me success :)
Fantastic information especially the freezing part. Never would have thought of dropping a parsley ice cube into soup. How ingenious. Thank you.
Thank you! There is so much information! Things I hadn’t taken into account!
Great job. Very informative, easy to understand. You've answered all the questions I had. Thank you for taking the time to make it.

Great info, Donna! I loved the pics of the Black Swallowtail butterfly. We get a good number of the caterpillars every year. Fortunately, we have plenty of volunteer parsley for them to eat.

Wow, what a comprehensive video and its presented so friendly and well! Started growing parsley outside last summer, it got through the winter so far. Now there is new seeds germinating on my window sill (they took ten days) and I will try to finish and store the elder one before it flowers… 🥳 Writing from germany, near thuringen, by the way 👋 . The place the one pest was named after 😅. Thank you for all the information!!! 🍀
So nice of you
Wow good info Donna. I had no idea it was that many different kinds of parsley. Amazing !
+pickerick1 Thanks Rick!

Fantastic video 👍
Very informative!!!! Surprised nobody upvoted or down voted yr video!!! Keep it up.
Excellent vid. I feel as thou I have just attended parsley university!
You sound like such a nice person. Thank you for the info!
This was a very helpful video with more information than I ever knew there could be about parsley! It's one of my new favorite herbs. I saw you discard the plant when it goes to seed - do you ever save the seeds and use those for your next planting? Or do you always buy new seeds? Thanks!
I have saved the seed, but honestly, I am still using a pack of seeds I bought many years ago, so I have not use my saved seeds.
Quite a presentation. I never heard of that Food Saver mason jar sealer so that' goes on the list and also freezing in ice cubes. Never too old to learn.
+SleestaksRule Thanks Ted!
Thanks you Donna for sharing that valuable information.
+Patrick Meehan Thank you!
Very informative. 👍🏻With regards to the caterpillar infestation, I learnt of the practice where a plant is set aside for the butterflies.🙂
Another awesome video. I appreciate all of your research. I have never tried parsley on eggs. I will have to try it out. Thanks 😀
Great vid!
VERY, VERY, good video and information. Flat leaf is my favorite. I started some seed a couple of weeks ago. It has now gotten its second set of true leaves and I will be transplanting it into a couple of larger containers.
+LARK'S GARDENS Thanks so much! You are on top of things (as always)! :) Have you started tomatoes too?
No, I have not started tomatoes or any other veggie. I am just growing cilantro, basil and parsley from seed, in my south windows. Rosemary and lemon verbena are doing fine in the pots from Fall. Lemon grass looks o.k., just o.k. Last year I started my tomatoes Feb. 1. I ended up 'topping them' 3 times. I promised myself to wait until March 1. That should give me enough time to have a nice healthy, stocky plant. Thank you for making really great videos.
Very informative!! Sounds like you are an expert. Im following you!!
Thank you!
This is so good, thank you for the video. (And I love what you did with the caterpillar).
I really enjoyed this video! I hope you have plans to do more of this type of video :)
+texgardener1 Thanks so much! I currently have footage for about 30 plants. So I hope to do about one a month.

Thanks for your amazing video. I have a trouble with my parsley plant. It has a lot of little white flakes. I don't know what it is and I don't know if I can use my parsley in my salads. When I shakes it looks like flakes. Thanks again! ♥️🙏
Very well covered and explained Donna👍👍. I wonder how much time you spent digging out the footage!

When to harvest seeds parsley
Wow! You are awesome!
Hello, very nice video, what kind of mix do u use for the soil?
Great video, thank you Donna. Was looking for the link to the DIY Butterfly house? Can't seem to find it. Thanks again!
liked, because u are clever to not kill the caterpillar, and increase the butterfly population whilst educating your kids ... very smart :)
Three days! It took my parsley seeds three days to germinate in a domed container on top of my refrigerator.
Cool!
love this video...I grow parsley every year also and you have given me a lot of good advice...thanks so much..also where did you purchase your salad dressing jar at the end of your video..I love it!! :-)
+mawpatti Thank you so much! I am glad to have helped. I bought the jar about 10 years ago at the grocery store.. They were selling them in the salad dressing section along with some dressing seasoning mix. Honestly though, haha, I mostly reuse jelly jars or nut butter jars for dressing and sauces. I thought the fancy dressing jar would be pretty for the picture and I guess it was (maybe I should use it more often). Thanks so much and have a beautiful day.
thanks for the reply..yes it was very pretty for the pictures...lol...it caught my attention!! :-)

Awesome info! I'm from Australia and am interested in your book, wondering how I'd go about getting your book! Please let me know. Cheers!
The All New Square Foot Garden book is available on Amazon. I have a link in the video description. It was written by a Man named Mel Bartholomew.
I don’t know if anyone will see this, but how often should I water the parsley my indoor seedlings? And why is the seeing kind of wilted and skinny and a bit yellow? Too much water, not enough light? I put a grow light on them in addition to a sunny window but haven’t seen much improvement after a week. What am I missing here? 🤔
I use molded plastic apple containers and keep them on a wire rack that has an old radiater under it. Got 90 parsly starters in 3 days! Now i have too many...
how do you know if the caterpillar has eaten enough and grown enough to pupate? what if you take it away from its food source too soon? I think maybe food should be given to the grub until it pupates.
Because I saw it was no longer on the parsley and, instead, had begun it's metamorphosis.
great video!!!! i'm very new to gardening and only have room for containers. does parsley need a tall container? ( i live in Puerto Rico, which is zone 13a!!!) so far i only have 3 twigs sticking out and i planted a bunch of seeds. can you recommend anything? i loooove parsley and it's just not producing enough for me. i'm also having issues with my chives. it never sprouted. i keep waiting and waiting... any advice would be greatly appreciated. thx, magda
Parsley and chives do best in temperatues around 70 F , can you grow them indoors?
I dont have much sunlight indoors. The temp here is usually mid 70-80. Is that too hot?
SO SMART!
+markelious :) haha Thanks for watching. :)
I live in zone 11a and parsley grows well here
Hi! Great , "neat" worked out video 1st of all ! But about the PH level I have some questions , I noticed your parsley enjoys it but when I have the same PH level ( Italian flat Parsley /rootparsley and Chinese ) my Italian starts to get yellow leaves , no matter how rich or poor the soil is in other components / nutrition , it always goes that way unless it is terribly cold ?? so the PH level I keep them on is always higher then with other people while I noticed some here just putting their parsley in the ground without checking things out , all my other herbs do it PERFECT and so does the chinese parsley and other types but the Italian one always looks frowned and yellow , now that is 1 thing I couldn't figure out , what is wrong with my Italian Parsley you think plse ?? I use this one the most ..thumbs up btw :)
Hi! It could be Alternaria Blight. Stop the video at 18:28 and you can take a closer look for the symptoms and treatment.
mh Not really sure but it could be , also just tasted it yesterday after commenting ? so bitter ! and just found one going to seed , might this be one of the reasons ? there are about 3 doing well and that is the ones in my kid's little garden , odd she can do it better right ? same plant ! but mine ? it sucks and I have just taken out some for the roots , I can only hope the bitter did not go to the root too , don't need them to go to seed as they already did that and I think I might have enough for about a couple years :o so nope not leaving them that way , how about this ? they often had the tendency to start to seed , can it be that I just have been trimming the plant so much to prevent its natural way of growing babyparsley that the taste goes to bitter ? it was close to seeding (all of them )edit : it is indeed the thing you mention ! clicked on google images and looks the same !but also another thing looks a bit similar , think I first try to cure these for Alternaria blight as it really has the same look , thnks !
p.s. that idea of making cubes from mixed parsley is a very great idea , I always dried it before , think I am gonna do it your way
Any comments on soaking these seeds?
Great video! I'm testing my parsley over - wintering for a second year in my raised bed. I live in zone 5a, so we do see below 10 degrees (though this year has been pretty warm to date). Is it spring yet? ;0)
+jim confer It felt like spring last month! Finally it is cold. :)

Can we grow parsley from cuttings?
can you sponsor me some parsley and basil seeds for my backyard so I could share then in the future? Our community don't have those.
I planted some Italian flat-leaved parsley seeds and now the plant is big enough. But unfortunately, I noticed this parsley has no aroma at all as we smell in dry ones or when used in dishes. Can you tell me what could be the reason for this? Can you suggest which variety has the best aroma or if it needs any extra care for being aromatic?
Is it possible it was overfed? I notice with my herbs, if they receive too much nitrogen, they will grow fast but also lose flavor. Slow growth is best for herbs.
@@RainbowGardens Can you please elaborate on overfed? I planted the seeds with a good amount of garden soil that had manures. Also, how are herbs grown slowly?
@@sadiatoma9332 Some manures are more "rich" with nitrogen and will cause rapid growth. Also, synthetic fertilizers may do the same.
@@RainbowGardens Thanks for explaining. Next time I will not make this mistake.
I live in a zone11a country and parsley grows well here
I'm growing curly parsley for the first time and I found this weird flaky thing all around the bottom of the plant and through out the plant, it's whitish yellowish green, it blows right off the plant, otherwise the plant looks great...I don't know what it is...now on closer inspection I noticed a bunch of black ants crawling around the soil. Ugh. What to do?
😲😲😲😲 jackpot!!!!
Hi from Canada! Im a new subscriber Really loving your videos Am wondering if you could include celcius temp as well as Farenheit in the text you provide for us Thankyou again for your wonderful teachings:)))
What edition is your Square Foot Gardening Book? I have the 2005 edition and there are no charts in the back.
Hi!
I purchased my books in 2008 and another one in 2015.
Ah, okay! I'll keep an eye for out for an updated version at my local used bookstores....all of the information is in my existing edition - it's just missing a chart that has all of the succession planting/planting dates on one handy page...Thank you for the response!
i like the video, i did today for indoor. Information really pro. thanks.
I have a question, my seeds green colour, i buy it closed package quality mark. But i heard parsley seeds are brown. Its my first try on parsley. Different type like at your video, curly type. I hope they really parsley bcz its really green :) thanks again.
Wonderful! Thank you so much for letting me know. I have many more of these videos on my channel and am adding more all the time.
wow you are fast to feedback :D i edit comment i think you didnt see coz you are fast than me! :)
Hmmm, I have never grown green parsley seed. Who knows, perhaps they are a rare variety or something? Let me know how it goes.
allright, package says its custom curly parsley. But im not sure about it. Thanks.
Hi! I just returned from the store and noticed some of the seeds are being sold with a "seed coating" to help with germination. I looked at the parsley package and the seeds were bright green because of the coating. Is that what you purchased? It may work better? I'd love to know how long it takes fro them to sprout.
I can't seem to get the seed to grow :/
It can take a while for it to germinate. Try different seed which may be fresher and make sure the soil is at the right temperature. Hope these tips help. It needs cool temperatures.
Me either
when you are going to drying any herbs you need to blanch them( pour them into boiling water for 20-30 seconds) then they dont lose the colour or the flavour as fast.
Not necessary when drying herbs and vegetables, but it does help when you freeze them. I usually throw frozen herbs and vegetables in soups, so I don't need to preserve the texture for soups.
....Butterfly video link... 🙁
It's Caterpie! And it also turns into a Metapod!
9b alright!!!
💚🙌🏻💚
Why not to save your own seeds for next year?
I grow in containers and practice succession planting techniques. I save seed from all of my native soil grown crops, provided they are not in proximity of crossing with another species of the same family.
EXPLAIN IN CELSIUS PLEASE
Hi!
here is a conversion chart for you:

how nice of you helping the caterpillar turn into a butterfly, instead of killing it
This video was very informative and easy to understand. I bought curled parsley in a pot from the supermarket yesterday and I'm looking forward to replant it in a few weeks. I hope it does well and grow.

Thank you very much!
Butterfly my ass...they eat my plants they get squished. Sorry, but they ate lots of my basil and I was not happy.
Hi! Perhaps the worm you experienced was a cabbage looper? They are most commonly found on basil. The parsley worm would much rather eat dill, carrot tops, and parsley.
Rainbow Gardens I am not a worm expert, but it looked the the one in your video. Regardless, he is no longer with us. I have pics but can’t add to my response.
