@@noah-berg the couple of GCs ive been to ((in several states) used to have huge drum rooms in the back of the store you would tenter through glass doors to cut the sound level down. They had quite a few kits set up, a separate cymbal room, and lots of stock. Now, they are essentially in a closet and open to the rest of the store with maybe three small kits set up, a small cymbal room with about half of tge stock not on the rack where you can try them, but stored standing on end. The variety and amount of stock is also way down. They don't carry all of what they used to, such as many heads and sticks. Sure, it is Guitar Center, but at one time, they carried most everything.
@@totigerus George's account is Bonhamology and Terry's is Bonzoleum. Terry has a lot of bonham tutorial videos while George is Bonham incarnate. I've never heard someone that can match the playing and tuning of Bonham like George. George is a legit Chicago jazz drummer so he's an all around beast on the kit.
Both Terry & George Are Off The Charts GREAT! However, some of us have put our time in and already know most of the material that they are sharing. Then again, I'm Old... LOL ;)
Potential idea: make a drumless loop (your songs are sick) and give away one of the snares you don't want to keep to someone who makes the dopest drum track to it!
Great snare. I bought one and switched the snare strainer to a normal throw-off. Drilled a couple of holes, shed a tear but then I got totally happy with the new setup. I like the supersensitive strainer but it's hard to transport.
The snare sounds Great! Strongly recommend replacing the snare wires. On parallel strainer models when the wires are as pulled as what you showed the sensitivity is going to lack big time hence the name of the drum. I have the smaller model of that same drum (70’s 5x14) and it’s got a GIANT tuning range. I only use it for studio/session work for this very reason so I’d say to comb over all major parts of the drum aka get those snare wires swapped before you sign off on that drum. Also, you might consider a Remo Coated CS for the top head to make it a touch beefier. Thx for the tip on the Vibra-Tite!! And like mentioned by several here, make any vid you like as we’ll watch em all Brotha!!!:)
Hello David and greeting from Berlin, Germany. 1. The Remo Resonant heads don‘t fit well with the original Ludwig rims. I came accros the same issue once myself. BUT: Ludwig offers a classic Reso-Head whereas to a different construction the ply comes out of the rim sideways. 2. Ludwig offers so called „Snare-Guards“ as supply parts for the super-sensitive throw off. So adding these two things and keeping the original parts would bring it to the original state which could have a huge impact on the re-selling price if intended. I restored a „Susi“ once myself, but wasn‘t to convinced be quality and sound, so i sold it finally light hearted and got 550€ out of 200 invested. Regards.
For a good Bonham sound, you'll never go wrong with medium tuning on the batter, tight tuning on the snare head, and snares turned a little bit loose. They're always be some variations but the right size drum with this formula will always get you close if not right there.
It has a deep, throaty, dryness that sounds pretty good to me. I keep a Ludwig standard maple 14x6.5 with the HD dry and snare side Hazy for that sound. It works great in hard rock applications.
Hi David. @ 3:55... when you reference Loctite being made to not be removed. I use Loctite purple on all of my drum fasteners. So... there are removable options with Loctite. You just have to pick the right one.
Man I remember I subbed to this channel when before it was 10k subs. Oh wow how much this channel has grown. Love ya rdavidr. Keep up with whatever you want to do.
I have the exact same drum, and it had the exact same problem. I took my angle grinder and put on a brass wire brush and a steel wire brush and the pitting came off without a problem. I didn't spray painted it with Rust-Oleum hammered copper. The drum looks awesome sounds great! Just a heads up for the next time you have to take pitting off.
I have that exact snare but took off the SS strainer, went to Lowes, bought some steel hardware grid stock, went GC, bought Ludwig strainer, butt plate and sound Sound pure wires. Didn't have to drill the shell and it turned it into a 402 pretty easy. Still my primary snare for about 10 year now!
Hey, could you help me find grid stock that would work for this online? I don't know what to look for. Have the same snare and looking to do this as well.
I actually had a 14X5 Super Sensitive at one point. Wasn't too impressed. I currently play on an Acrolite which I love! My kit is a Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove.
Awesome series! I'm looking forward to future episodes. In regards to the snare, the sound didn't really vibe with me all that much, though I'm sure if you messed with it a bit more you could get it to sound at least a little better.
I agree I don’t like parallel strainers either. The thing about the super sensitive is that they were really designed with orchestra in mind. The spupraphonic does sound a different. That’s the true Bonham snare.
David, it sounds good to me, but as a fellow packrat who's trying to keep inventory in check, I recommend getting rid of it if you're not in love with it and don't think you're going to cherish it in the long run. You can always look for another one if you ever find yourself needing it in the future, which you probably won't. Just my two cents.
I think it sounds pretty good & you got pretty close. You can tell the heads are brand new but once broken in a bit and a little more fine adjustments I think that snare is a keeper. It's really hard to get that Bonham sound on any drum really because nobody hits the way he did. I have tried for years and like you have gotten close but not spot on. Cool video and OMG, i knew you had a lot of drums but WOW you really have a lot of drums..lol
I too, have like 20 snares on a shelf collecting dust. Missing an SS though. My supra is my favorite snare in my collection. (off topic, you should make a video on homemade octobans with pvc)
Great video man, keep up the great work! Personally I like really high tunings but that snare sounded alright. Much better than that really low tuning that it used to be lol.
Great sounding snare !!! Read the comments below ,see how many people like the sound of this snare... * DOT sale it !!! Play with the tuning a little more , maybe try a different haeds ...you'll fell in love with it...I know I love mine 😘
I like this video a lot. Still, I have heard very FEW Super Sensitive snare drums that sound like a Supraphonic. I think those extra snare gears and parts make the shells sound a bit different for some reason and I'm not a huge fan. You did a Great job on this one! Thanks for sharing!
Real talk, the biggest advice I could give to Young drummers, learn what you like... don't listen to the retailers or the artists. When I was first starting everybody said deep brass coated nickel we're the best snares.... After finding my own groove, I personally found out I like super thin steel snares, they tend to crack and ring out more. Trust your own ear. At the end of the day it's you playing not them.
I know Bonham liked the Emperor on his 6.5 Supraphonic, but an Ambassador might open this Supersensitive (with the same shell and lugs) up more. Above all, the wires should be replaced to truly give that fine drum a chance to shine.
It sounds good to me. I am listening to it through my studio monitors in my room with UA-cam compressing the life out of it. So yeah it sounds good. No idea how it sounds in real life and probably never will. But hey maybe one day.
John only used 3 mics when micing up. One kick, one over head and a ribbon to the ride side of the kit aimed at the snare. ps Snare sounded awesome dude.
hello there. q: how long the snare can be storaged (in a closet, with no playing)? and how it should be prepared for long-time storaging (with heads, strings and lugs on)? thnx.
I started using brass washers a while ago on my lugs and its been a game changer for me. It is soft enough where if you are cranking heads it will hold the tuning like a nylon washer. Might be worth looking into?
I think it sounds good and bad at the same time... Dont worry, ill mess with the tuning more!
me out here with one e-drum kit
Good enough for jazz
Hey David! I have a crack in the wrap of my floor Tom on an old premier set. How would you recommend fixing that ?
I think an Ambassador might've gotten you closer to a good sounding snare
I sort of agree with the good and bad.... though not really bad... for me...*meh*
You've got more inventory than most music stores.
@@noah-berg agreed. Last time I was in GC, they still had plenty of guitars, but the drum section was decimated.

Any OG’s also miss the $20 drum set?
For sure dude. The good ol’ days

That snare sounds KILLER. If anything just a touch dry, but I think it definitely invokes that Zep vibe
Do any series David... we will watch everything... I'm probably saying this for everyone here... :)
Yeah
I picked one of these up in highschool for $70. Thought it was a dream, by far one of my favorites.
Love that fill @ 7:12
I would like to see more of this series. Fixing up some snares while trying an unfamiliar tuning or head/wire choices. Can't wait to see more snares!
Good sounding snare drum.a collector’s item.from the 70’s Ludwig 🥁👍
