I married into a huge Filipino family. We are coming there this weekend for a wedding and I am looking forward to showing them this location. I’m like the Clark Griswold of the family so I will be the tour guide that has never been to New York. Thank you for all of your information. Your videos have been so helpful.
Ben was my videographer for my wedding and family friend!! I’m pregnant now and craving Filipino food so I stumbled onto this video. I’m so happy he got a shoutout 🥲 Thanks for honoring him. May his joy and passion live on through other creators 🤍
WHAT Ben died?! I've been binge watching your videos lately coz I have a planned trip to NYC later this month and stumbling upon your videos and seeing your man behind the camera & co-host is a fellow Filipino makes it even fun to watch and now he's gone 😥 Hats off to the guy , I will still continue to support you and his memory will live on your videos 😇🙏
Love the reference to Ben, and what better way to celebrate him than showcasing Filipino food and culture. I loved the restaurants, the people, most of the food and the generosity of spirit all round. ❤❤
Ben was so genuine and down to earth and was a perfect match with Barrio. They vibed so well together. It was so heartbreaking to lose Ben so soon, but we know he is resting in Heaven ❤ what a great way to dedicate a video in his memory.
Oh man, I haven't watched this channel much this past year, just been too busy, so I missed the news of Ben's passing. So sorry for you loss, he seemed like an amazing friend to know.
One thing that always fascinates me as a Filipino is how people of other cultures seem to be stumped on the spoon and fork combo of utensils. Like, how in the world is using a spoon to scoop rice harder than using fork for them?
It's what they're used to. You can say it's their norm or even part of their culture (not using forks and spoons). It's the same for us when it comes to fork and knife combo which we very rarely use.
Me, a Filipino, watching this while eating my lunch with a spoon, was absolutely CALLED OUT. Also, thank you for dedicating this video to Camera man Ben.
I have the great luck to live in one of the biggest Filipino communities in Southern California (Mira Mesa in Northeastern San Diego) and we have many really solid places, mostly little humble places in strip malls that are just such a nice change of pace
i saw him did he have a hear t attack or something he wasnt the camera man in the breakfast video and filiino food video young i saw him he seemed to be in 20s@@briandevitt6903
@@micholakinola1053 The young camera man John used to have. He was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and died within months of knowing. We all loved him on here. He was so young.
I'm a Filipino so i have access to all this food but i really like your sense of adventure and openness towards our culture. This was really fun to watch 💕
I haven’t been watching your channel for a few years but watching I’m thinking where’s Ben. Only to see he had recently passed. Sorry to hear. RIP to my fellow Filo bro. Hope you having unlimited Jolibees up there.
Purple Dough looks like a nice place to hang out with friends. The deserts look so good to match with coffee or tablea especially on a rainy afternoon.
Hey Jon, how are you my friend? Since you did this Filipino video I wanna thank you for it. You probably know Jay is in the Philippines right now and having a great time there. I wanna officially invite you to go there and maybe come with us sometime and we'll show you around. You can even take Adriana and Alexander. Hope to see you again soon my friend. Take care.
Filipina here. The most possible explanation why knives were not encouraged to be used during meals must have originated among the Spaniards being scared those sharp objects would be used to butcher them. Ok. Perhaps, it was the Americans who restricted knife use on the Filipino table. Just imagine how they must have felt while dining with Filipinos such as the fearless, straightforward, and aggressively patriotic General Antonio Luna!
Renees is my favorite out of them. Kare kare with sizzling squid 👌🏼👌🏼my perfect bite is rice with the sauce a slice of squid with a little bagoong on top.
I use to live close to that area.been to Rene’s many times. Great food one thing I learned if the owners are from a part of the Philippines called Pamponga the food will be good
Please can you do a video showing plant based food options in NYC? Planning on coming in May and have heard great things but struggling to find many menus online
Made me hungry and miss my mum's kare-kare and dinuguan, and also that sizzling sisig place along Taft where my classmates and I used to hang out for ice-cold San Mig beer after our post-grad class!
The next time you get a hang over, try eating the Pork Sinigang. It just makes the hang over disappear little by little with each spoonful of soup you consume.
For the bbq we can get calamansi here in the bay area but if not lemon is fine but 7UP/Sprite is used regardless in the marinade for me. Ube flan has been around here for a while also pretty good combo. I wanna try the food there looks good

Actually, just as you eat suman (sticky rice) with mango, you eat dinuguan with a steamed rice cake (Spelled p. u. t. o. I will not type the word out because it gets my comment deleted). Kabayan pork barbecue is really good. It tastes like the pork barbecue that I had at Aristocrat in Cubao so many years ago. Son and I ate at the Kabayan Restaurant (not the Turo Turo. The restaurant is on the other side, fronting the Turo Turo.). Lumpia Shanghai, Pancit Bihon, Pork barbecue (2 pieces) and chicken barbecue (2 pieces) all totalled only $55. Then I bought ube flavored steamed rice cake and 4 cups of ube champorado at Sariling Atin store. I wish you had a glimpse of Gwapa (Tagalog borrowed from Spanish, meaning beautiful) Salon. I'm curious about their hairstylists and what their customers usually expect.
My ex-filipina GF broke up with me because HER MOM loved me more. She would cook all my favorite Filipino dishes whenever I eat at her home. She would tell my GF that she was too busy at the hospital to cook for her.
Huh. First time I've seen beef sinigang, I've always only ever seen pork (at least when it comes to the tamarind version. There's also fish sinigang with either guava or miso base for the soup). What I see beef usually used for is nilaga.

FYI, The name Kamote or Camote (Sweet potato) is derived from the Nahuatl word camotli, which came from Mexico and other central american countries.
The Galleon boat trade route gave the world camote from Mexico.
