I was stoked to see there was mention of this competition on youtube. I used to live in Avalon, went to High School there for a few years, my dad was a hotel manager. I was one of two Islander's who qualified and took part in this comp. Was the first guy out the gate.. I knew many of these skaters, like Tony Alva and Bobby Piercy.. Yep...great times for a 15 year old kid. Just two years before vI enlisted in the Air Force. Now I'm 57 and falling apart. Seems like it was a century ago, but again, like it was only last week. Strange...
The Great Bob Skoldberg..!He saw me skating vert at Skateboard Oddessy in Mission Viejo, CA 1978 Gave me a set of Independent Trucks (109mm) took my number and Gave it to Fausto Vitelo and I became one the first dozen of vert skaters on Independent Trucks 😊 cheers from Lido Isle, Newport Beach, CA.😊
I just caught up with this on YT... I was living and working in Avalon the summer of 77, summer job with my brother after high school.. I remember this race very well, very fast downhill runs, not much protection, a few bales of hay..I had the tshirt till I wore it out, Wide world of sports was there, skateboarding like this was new...what a great time to live on Catalina Island!
as it was in the beginning , thanx for bring it back the real skateboarding .. with longboarding those wonderful and xtreme days of skateboarding are back! \m/
Crazy speeds on those old school wheels. I wish I could go back with one of my slalom rigs and hand it to one of those guys. he'd win easily with the wheels and trucks i have on it. Piercy R.I.P.
@Fuck Google Wheels are usually about 78a hardness. Rear truck could have a semi hard bushing and negative wedge, while the front should have a softish bushing with positive wedge. Depending on your trucks of course.
That IS amazing! I know those streets well. Never knew there was a race there. Safety was clearly not a priority. I'm not a skateboarder, but those boards look awfully short for those speeds! So, Marcus, NorAms 2013 Catalina Island?!?
i feel like these guys have more skill than modern riders because they have hard ass wheels and theyre getting speed wobble all through it. its really just them riding instead of them and the technological aspects of their set up
Hacer esas bajadas con esos monopatines en aquellos años era toda un proeza, tablas estrechas y con flex, ejes cortos, ruedas pequeñas... ¡¡¡YEEEAAAHHH!!!

36 years and its still exciting! This is what drew so many of us to skateboarding and skateboard racing. Truly the good old days!

It's so great to finally see the video footage all these years later.
