I snagged mine on a nail that was sticking up slightly in a doorway (not even outdoors!). Doh! I called them (MH is owned by Columbia) and sent the jacket in and they actually replaced the whole panel between the baffle stitch. I recall it being about $40. I have a hard time finding where they did it. They did a spectacular job. And it's about as permanent as you can get. I thought it was well worth the price considering the cost of the jacket, although your solution surely is a good one for the price. Tenacious Tape is awesome. Thanks for the great content. Keep it up!
I had that thought as a possibility, but then thought there are no panels, simply stitches that create panels to keep the fill from bunching up in one area, am I incorrect. I was going to remove the stitches in the panel but didn't expect a seam. What say you? Thx! (:
@@jonathansmith9705 I can't pretend to be a seamstress, but upon closer inspection, it does indeed look like they stitched a matching panel of fabric over the old one. Nobody would ever know unless closely inspecting it.
@@karnon1 Thanks for your thoughts! It seems like the best idea. I will contact the company and ask if there are panels or whether the company was able to sew a nylon piece of fabric over the old "panel." I wanted to try it myself, but doubt they'll have the same fabric handy to send me. I'm very surprised Columbia had a swatch of yours. I'd imagine the fabric and facility would be in China. I'll let you know. Sill beating myself up for wearing it in the woods! My bad. Stay well!
I have an old down jacket I burned a hole in years ago in the sleeve. I used an alcohol wipe from the first aid kit and Tenacious Tape. It's held up great for years with no peeling. Good tip Dan 👍
Wonderful, thanks so much for this video. I ordered the product, which is packaged differently now (5 years), in Gray and it worked like a charm. It was good to see you work with the tape so I knew and could anticipate a tricky sticky time of it. Yay!
Thank you Dan, yeah, I caught a couple tears in my wonderfully warm, super lightweight LL Bean parka; I love this thing! I didn't know there was a tape made for this exact purpose, but I'll try it! I appreciate you taking the time to produce this. Very helpful. All the very best!
Push the down to either side of the rip so the nylon isn't sitting on any down at all to apply the patch, then shake the down back in place when you're done. If it's extra filled, use something weighted to pin the down flat. What you want to avoid is loft and static electricity because that's what fluffs down back into the repair field.
Good advice. Since this is synthetic and not actual down it’s a lot harder to work with since the fibers are not attached to a root “stem” like in real down and you could just get that feather or troublesome feathers away from the spot and the fibers with it.
I’m in Wisconsin and yesterday the temp was about 8 degrees. I threw my ghost whisper in over another light puffy. Stopped at Home Depot to pick up some poplar boards. What was I thinking? I snagged the jacket on a jagged board edge and tore a hole in it. Seeing this video is very timely. Thank you.
Rmarvids ha! I am actually going to be car camping! I’ll be testing my gear in the bitter cold!! Enjoy the weekend with your daughter. Maybe I’ll see you on the trail sometime!!
The trip may be delayed! I just received a message from my buddy that he pulled a muscle in his back last night! I hope that’s not just an excuse because he’s too afraid of the cold 🥶 😂🤣

Great Video. That was always my biggest fear when I had my Ghost Whisperer. I will buy another one again as soon as i can justify it again. You should do a tent repair video with the *GEAR AID* Fabric and Vinyl stuff. It saved an old tent rainfly of mine.
I haven’t had good luck with that stuff, had some crampon holes in some Dead Bird pants and tried to patch them. All of the tape came off the next time I washed them. This is also what the manufacturer recommended so IDK. I’ve sewn holes in jackets like that and it holds up great.
-I think you should have cut more of a square shape -maybe keep the tape off the seam -Also you could paint the stuffing black or even just paint the top of the tape(as long as the paint/sharpee can't bleed) ..And maybe even ironed it(if possible) Also I bet boxing tape will work good enough! for some of us who don't want to try to find this product ..Actually I'm going to try this process with boxing tape ..I'll lyk if it's a fail! LOL! And thanks for the idea buddy! I was Soo pissed when I ripped my favorite jacket looks like yours.
Nice! This is definitely helpful to know. I remember when I first ripped a puffy...Never used tenacious tape though (but I've wanted to). I'm just lazy and use what I have (duct tape or super glue). The tenacious tape looks much better. My puffy just looks extra extra loved haha But I'm ok with that
That is so funny! Maybe you look like your shipping yourself to another section of the woods rather than backpacking there 😂😂 (lame joke) But seriously that tape is some awesome stuff! I have another repair I made about a year ago and that stuff sticks to the fabric and does not peel off!
I've used this method on my puffy many times (its very well loved.) Just ripped a 3 inch hole in my brand new Enlightened Equipment quilt, ugh. I need this fixed asap. Any idea if the Tenacious Tape method with work on the quilt also?!!
Full disclosure; I put Gorilla Tape on a couple different jackets over the years, and it's still hanging on! The problem is the type I have is the original black Gorilla tape, which would totally stick out on my orange parka. Ordering Tenacious Tape now!
Stitch the fabric with a needle and thread (something you should keep in your med-kit) and then cover only the stitch in tenacious tape. Kind of like a taped seem on a tent. Dan does great work, but this was more a hack than a fix.
Will that tape hold up in the washer and dryer? I know how to sew that up, but in a pinch that tape would be great. I'm going to pick some up for a rip I got in the bottom of my tent from an inconsiderate car camper who left tent stakes in the ground pounded down so far I couldn't see them until one went through the bottom of my tent and into my foot one night. LOL
Hi Holly! That’s a great question! I have not yet tried to wash the jacket. I do know that companies do sell specific cleaners for down and also have specific washing instructions. The tag on my jacket says “machine wash cold gentle, do not bleach, tumble dry low, remove promptly, do not iron, do not use fabric softener, do not dry clean”. If you’re planning on washing it make sure you do it on the delicate cycle. Also, I know you can wash down stuff in a bathtub. The main thing is to make sure that you don’t lose any loft. When you dry it, dry it on the delicate cycle with a couple of tennis balls (helps with retaining loft). I would Also highly recommend heading over to Mountain hardwear’s website for proper cleaning instructions.
I’ve used Tenacious Tape to repair a thumb-sized hole in the knee of some nylon Columbia pants I use for working in the yard. Since the pants are machine washable and go in the dryer (and get used often), I’ve had occasion to wash and dry them more than two dozen times since the repair. The patch shows no sign of coming loose, peeling, or fraying. The stuff is amazing! You almost don’t need a sewing kit anymore.
So is this Ghost Whisperer a thing in the States? I don’t think you could buy it across the pond. Has anyone tried nail polish? I haven’t :D Just a thought. My method has been duct tape in the inside of the tear. This product seems interesting though.
I’m sure you can buy the Ghost Whisperer world wide. It’s a great jacket (aside from its insane price tag). Never tried nail polish. Tenacious Tape is a solid product.
My advice is to place the tape sticky side up inside the jacket then press fabric onto tape
Legend
Or tape it from both sides.I use crazy glue works great!

If you round the corners on adhesive patches, they're less apt to catch on stuff.
Exactly right!! I completely neglected to mention that!! Thanks for contributing!!!

Alcohol will evaporate, but soap will leave a residue. If you have the option, it might be worth it to actually use alcohol.
